In the name of God Amen The Fourteenth day of August in the yeere of our Lord Christ one Thousand Six hundred Thrity and eyght
I Edward Kempe of the p�ish of Boughton Aluph in the County of Kent Yeoman being sicke and weake of Body but of good and perfect mynd and memory blessed bee God therefore doe make ordayne and declare This my Last will and testament in manner and forme following
First I bequeath my Soule unto Allmighty God that gave it mee and my body to be buried where it shall please my Executrix ad Executor hereafter named hoping for eternall life and Salvation by the only meritts of my gratious [gracious] and all sufficient Saviour Jesus Christ

Item I give and bequeath unto the poor people of Boughton Aluph aforesaid the sume of Five pounds of lawfull monyof England to bee disposed with all convenient speede by my Executrix and Executor of this my Last will together with the Minister of the p�ish of Boughton Aluph in such manner as they in their discretions shall thinke best

Item I give and bequeath unto my Sonnes Roger Kempe and William Kempe As allso to my Daughters Mary Kempe Elizabeth Kempe and Sarah Kempe to each and every of these my sonnes and daughters named Fifty pounds apeece of Lawfull mony of England to bee paid unto them at theire severall ages of one ad twenty yeeres or on theire dayes of marriage which of them shall happen first

Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Katherine Kempe one hundred pounds of like mony or to the full value thereof out of my goods and chattells if shee marry with Thomas Fagg of Fordage [Fordwich?] in the County of Kent Yeoman to bee paid unto her in manner Following / That is to say / Threescore pounds of the said hundred pounds to bee paid on the day of her marriage with the said Thomas Fagg and Forty pounds the residue of the said hundred pounds wthin three yeeres next ensuing after my decease or within such time as my Executrix hereafter named and the said Thomas Fagg shall agree upon

But if it shall happen that my said Daughter Katherine doe not marry with the said Thomas Fagg Then my mynde and will is that shee shall have payd unto her at her daye of marriage with any other man eyther the full sum of the hundred pounds aforesaid or soe much of it onely as her mother my Executrix shall thinke fitt and noe more

Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Francis (sic) Kempe the sume of Fifty pounds of like lawfull mony to bee paid unto her on the day of her marriage

Provided all wayes and my mynde and will is that yf any of my Children before named shall departe this naturall life before they shall accomplishe theire Severall ages Limited for the payment of theire said severall portions and before they bee married That then the portion of every of them soe departing this Life shall be equally divided amongst the Children of his or her body Lawfully begotten and then being Living And yf any of them soe departing this Life shall have noe Children of his or her body Lawfully begotten and then Living That then his or her portion shalbee equally divided amongst all my children wch shall then bee living

Allsoe my mynde and will is That all the saide Severall Sums of mony or portions geven and bequeathed to all and every of my forenamed Chldren shall remayne in the hands and custody of theire mother my Executrix and of my said sonne Edward untill they shall have accomplished theire foresaide severall ages or untill they shall be married And that with the benefit and profitt that shall arise thereby shee my said Executrix and my said sonne Edward shall educate and bring up all such of my Children aforesaid as are yett of younge and tender yeeres untill such time as they shall bee fitt to put forth to Service And shall also place them out in services fitting and meete for them soe that noe pte [part] of theire portions bee diminished eyther for theire education bringing up or plasing [placing] out

Item I give and bequeath three quarters or three whole parts of all my lynnen househould stuffe and Furniture whatsoever unto Katherine my well beloved Wife that shee maybee better inabled to bring up my youngest children As also that she may bestow what parts or pcells [parcels] hereof shee shall think fitt on such of my children as shee shall fynde most obedient and dutifull unto her

Item I give and bequeath unto Edward Kempe my eldest sonne the other quarter of fourth parte of my said Lynnen househoulde stuffe and furniture

The rest and residue of all my goods plate towell ? reddy monie cattells chattells rent revercons debts and proffits whatsoever not before in this my will give willed and bequeathed my debts funerall expences and all my legacies in this my last will and Testament being truly satisfied paid and discharged I will give and bequeath unto the aforesaid Katherine my well beloved wife and to my sonne Edward the Executrix and Executor of this my last will and Testament and William Titherton of Wye my Overseer, desiring him to bee ayding and assisting unto my said wife and sonne in seeing this my last will to bee faithfully p�formed and fulfilled in all poyntes and p�turnters [pretences?] according to my intent and true meaning

Item my mynde and will is That if all and every of the severall Sums of mony and portions before bequeathed to those of my Seaven Children first named in this my last will and Testament cannot fully and conveniently bee raysed and discharged otherwise out of y goods and Chattells That then my said sonne Edward my Executor shall supply and make out whatsoever shalbee wanting out of his owne portion which in this my Will I have given unto him my said sonne Edward

This is the last will and Testament of me the said Edward Kempe made the day and yeere aforesaid Touching the disposition of all my Lands Tenements and hereditaments whatsoever That is to say

I will give and bequeath unto the before named Edward Kempe my eldest sonne [All] That my Mansion house wherein I now dwell with all the Barnes buildings edifices Orchards gardens and Closes with all and Singular Thappurtenances there unto belonging And also all other my Barnes Messuages Tenements and hereditaments with all and every their Appurtenances wheresoever with all and every theire appurtenances wheresoever scituate lying and being in the parishes of Boughton Aluph aforesaid Wye and Kennington in the County of Kent aforesaid or wheresoever else within the said county To bee had and houlden to him the said Edward Kempe and to the heires male of his body lawfully begotten

And if it shall happen that the said Edward my Sonne doe departe this life not having any such issue or heires male of his body Lawfully begotten Then I will give and bequeath All my said Mansion House Lands Tenements and hereditaments And all the said p�mises whatsoever unto Roger Kempe my Second Sonne To be had and houlden unto him the said Roger Kempe and the heires Males of his body lawfully begotten hee paying to every of the daughters of the said Edward Kempe my Sonne of his body lawfully begotten if it shall please God to give him any the Sume of Fifty pounds apeece of lawfull mony of England At theire severall ages of one and Twenty yeeres or the severall dayes of theire Marriages which shall first happen to come or bee

And if it shall happen That the said Roger Kempe my Sonne doe departe this life not having any such issue nor heires male of his body Lawfully begotten Then I will give and bequeath All my said Messuages Houses Lands Tenements and hereditaments And all and singular the said p�mises whatsoever unto William Kempe my youngest Sonne The same to bee had and houlden unto him and his heires for ever hee the said William paying to every of the daughters of the said Roger Kempe my Sonne of his body lawfully begotten if it shall please God to give him any the Sume of Fifty pounds apeece of lawfull mony of England at such tymes as they shall accomplish theire severall ages of one and Twenty yeeres or the severall dayes of theire Marriages which shall first happen to come or bee

Item I further Will give and bequeath into the foresaid Katherine my well beloved wife the sume of tenn pounds by the yeere to bee paid unto her the said Katherine or to her Assignes yeerly and every yeere during the whole terme of her naturall life out of the proffits and oineluments issuing out of all my said Lands Tenements and hereditaments before given and bequeathed as aforesaid by him whomsoever shall happen to bee true owner or heire of the same in manner and forme following That is to say
At two usual feasts or terms in the yeere namely the Feast of thannunciation of the blessed virgin Mary and of St. Michaell Tharchangell by even and equall portions halfe yeerely to bee paid whereof the First payment my mynde and will is shall begin and bee on the next fest day of the two said feast dayes which shall first fall out and been imediately after my decease

And if and as often as it shall happen that the foresaid Tenn pounds soe willed and bequeathed as aforesaid or any p�te [part] thereof shalbee beehind and unpaid after any of the said Feasts or dayes of Payment in the which the same ought to bee paid in manner aforesaid in any of the yeeres duringthe naturall life of the said Katherine according to this my last will above the space of tenn dayes my mynde and will is That then and soe often it shall and may be lawfull to and for the said Katherine my well beloved wife and her assignes And I give unto her and them full power and authority by this my last will and Testament into my said Mansion house and into all other my said Lands Messuages Tenements and hereditaments
And into all and singular the p�mises soe given willed and bequeathed as aforesaid with Thappurtenances or into any p�te or p�cell [part or parcel] thereof to enter and distraigne And the distresses and distresses there found had and taken from theire lawfully to Leade beare divine and carry away And also the same to keepe withould impound and detayne untill such time as the said Sume of tenn pounds and every p�te thereof together with all the Costs Charges and arrearages thereof or there abouts (if any bee) bee unto her or them her assignes fully satisfied and paid

Item my mynde and will is that shee the said Katherine my beloved wife shall cleerly have hould and inioy the whole and full terme of her naturall life without paying anything therefore All the Hall and the Chamber over the same of my Mansion House in wch I now dwell with all the roomes and Closetts in or aboute them or either of them for her and her servants Children or assignes to use occupie and dwell in as alsoe the buttery of the sayd house which is next to the south yard or close thereunto adioynenge wth free passinge ingresses egresses and regresse unto into and out of the same and every parte thereof at all tymes reasonable and convenient dureing the said Terme of her natural life

And alsoe my minde and will is that she have free and francke use of the well and of all & every the waters and waterings aboute the said house or thereunto adioynenge belongeing or appertaineinge with free and francke passinge and repassinge forher and her assignes unto and from the same

Item I give and bequeath unto her my said wife free ingresses egresses and regresse into and out of all my gardens and orchards belongeing unto the same my said Mansion House as alsoe full power authority to save and reape all the benefitt thereof, a bushell of hempe every yeere dureing her natural life in the orchard where she shall thinke good, to save the same, and to take such parte of the herbes and fruites that shall arise issue come or growe from out of in or uppon them or any of them at any tyme or tymes yearlie & every yeare for and duringe the whole and full Terme of her naturall life as foresaid s she shall please and think fit to make use of

In Witnes whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and Seale the said fowerteenth day of August in the said yeare of our Lord Christe one Thousand six hundred thirty and eight

Notes:
Edward Kempe was buried at All Saints, Boughton Aluph on 22nd August 1638.
His christening (circa 1580 +/- 10 years?) is not found. However, he is one of the Wye Kempe�s.
Edward married Catherine Hinkley 7th Feb 1611 at Harrietsham, Kent. The marriage licence entry reads: Kempe Edward of Boughton Aluph, yeoman, and Catherine Hinckley of Harrietsham, virgin. At Harrietsham. Repente Lillye of Boughton Aluph, Carpenter, bonds(man)

Daughter Katherine (Catherine) Kempe did marry Thomas Fagge, thus:
10th Oct 1638: Thomas Fagge, about 22, Ba., Husbandman of Fordwich, whose father William Fagge consents, and Catherine Kempe of Boughton Aluph, virgin, about 23, d. of Katherine Kempe, Widow of Boughton Alluph, who consents, as is testified by George Laceley of Hackington. At. St. Margaret, Canterbury.

Daughter Frances Kempe married Robert Greene 2 Jun 1639 at Eastwell.
