In the Name of God Amen this Twelfth day of November in the yeare of our Lord One Thousand Seaven hundred and Twenty
I Thomas Lake of Goudhurst in the County of Kent Esqr. [Esquire] do make this my last Will and Testament in writeing in manner following
First I bequeath my Soule into the hands of Almighty God by whose mere mercy and grace I trust to be saved through the death of my Saviour and blessed Redeemer Jesus Christ My body in hopes of a Joyfull Resurrection I committ to the Earth to be decently interred in the Chancell of the Parish Church of Goudhurst aforesaid in such manner as my deare wife Alice Lake shall thinke fitting
And as touching the disposition and distribution of my reall and Personal Estate I give and dispose of as followeth

First I will that all my debts that I owe shall be paid
Item I give unto and amongst the poore people of Goudhurst aforesaid five pounds to be distributed amongst them according to the discretion of my said wife

Item I give and bequeath unto the said Alice my wife All my silver plate household goods household stuffe and furniture of and in my now dwelling house in Goudhurst aforesaid of what nature or kind soever And alsoe all my stock of Cattel And alsoe all the Personall Estate of my late Mother in Law Alice Kirrill deceased that I am any waies entitled unto

Item I give and bequeath unto Three thousand pounds apiece
Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Frances Hussey who is lately marryed unto Thomas Hussey Gentleman butt one thousand pounds for that upon her marrying the said Thomas Hussey I secured unto her for her marriage portion twoe thousand pounds

And my Will and meaning is that foure hundred and fifty pounds and the interest thereof due to me on a mortgage made by my late sonn in law Alexander Homesby, Gentleman deceased unto Sara Streatfeild widow deceased which mortgage and the lands thereby mortgaged by my payment of the said foure hundred and fifty pounds and the interest thereof which amounted unto the sume of thirty and four pounds and Eleaven shillings was assigned unto me by Thomas Streatfeild of Chiddingstone in the said County of Kent Gentleman Executor of the last Will and Testament of the said Sarah Streatfeild
and fourty pounds due to my late Brother Arthur Lake Gent deceased from my said late sonn in law the said Alexander Homesby’s hand and one hundred pounds due to my said late brother Arthur Lake from my said sonn in law Alexander Homesby on a mortgage made by my said late sonn in law the said Alexander Homesby to one Mr. _____ Skinner in Trust for my said late brother Arthur Lake and all interest that shall be due to me for the said severall summes of foure hundred and fifty pounds; and Thirty and foure pounds and Eleaven shillings; and one hundred pounds; and fourty pounds at the time of my decease shall be accepted and taken by my said daughter Philadelphia Homesby as and for part of the said three Thousand pounds that I have given to her by this my said Will

Item I give and bequeath unto my said wife Alice Lake for and dureing her naturall life All my Messuages lands Tenements and hereditaments whatsoever scituate lying and being in Goudhurst aforesaid and in the severall Parishes of Leedes (Kent), Orlestone, Margate, Warehorne and Brensett in the said County of Kent and my Messuage lands Tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances in Beckley in the County of Sussex And alsoe my Fee Farme rents in the County of Oxford And Messuages and house in St. Clements Lane in the Parish of St. Clements Danes in the County of Middlesex
And from and after the decease of the said Alice my wife I give and bequeath all my said Messuage lands Tenements hereinbefore menconed with their appurtenances in manner following (that is to say)

I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Alice and her heires forever my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances in Goudhurst aforesaid which are in my owne occupation And my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments in Goudhurst aforesaid which are in the occupation of James Wilkinson and _______ Davis or one of them and my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments which I have lately purchased of John Lambert and Elizabeth his wife called Gaines with their appurtenances in Goudhurst aforesaid

Item I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Philadelphia Homesby and her heires forever All my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever in the Parish of Leedes in the said County of Kent and all my Fee Farme rents in the said County of Oxford or elsewhere and my two houses with their appurtenances in Clements lane in the Parish of St. Clements Daines in the County of Middlesex

Item I give and bequeath into my said daughter Frances Hussey and her heires forever All my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever in the said Parish of Beckley in the said County of Sussex And alsoe all my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments in Goudhurst which I lately purchased of Peter Heyton Gent and Patience his wife and others and are now in the possession of Peter Hauley or his Undertenants

Item I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Elizabeth Lake and her heires forever my Messuage Farme lands Tenements and hereditaments in Godhurst aforesaid in the occupation of Richard Cushman and my Messuage lands tenements and hereditaments in Goudhurst aforesaid in the occupation of ____ Cayrott and my twoe little houses in Goudhurst afpresaid with the appurtenances in the occupation of the Widow Cradock and ____ Cacott and all my lands Tenements and hereditaments in the severall parishes of Orlestone, Snargate, Warehorne and Brensett in the said County of Kent

And Whereas the Messuage lands and Tenements that I have herein given unto my said daughter Alice are greater in value than the Messuage lands and Tenements that I have given unto my said daughter Elizabeth and her heires I do hereby give and charge the said Messuage lands and Tenements that I have given unto my said daughter Alice and her heires with the payment of One hundred pounds unto my said daughter Elizabeth her heires Executors or Administrators within one year after the decease of the said Alice Lake my wife

Item I give all the rest and residue of my personall Estate unto my said wife, she paying my debts Legacies and funrall expences
Trusting that my said Wife Alice will at her death dispose of such rest and residue as she shall not necessarily make use of amongst my said daughters according to her discretion
And I do hereby nominate and appoint the said Alice my wife Sole Executrix of this my Will
And do hereby revoke all former Wills by me made and do hereby declare this to be my last Will and Testament

In Witness whereof to this my last Will and Testament contained in three sheetes of paper I have sett my hand and seale, to every sheete thereof the day and yeare first herein mentioned

Be it known That Whereas I Thomas Lake of Goudhurst in the County of Kent Esqr. made my last Will and Testament in writeing bearing date the Twelfth day of November which was in the yeare of our Lord One thousand Seaven hundred and Twenty And now for as much as I have changed my mind touching certaine things in my said last Will contained And for and concerning all other things in the said last Will mentioned (other than such as I shall not hereby otherwise dispose of) I do by this present Codicill confirme and ratifie the said last Will

And First Whereas I doe by my said last Will charge the Messuages lands and Tenements that I have by my said last Will given unto my daughter Alice Lake and her heires after the death of Alice Lake my wife with the payment of One hundred pounds unto my daughter Elizabeth Lake her heires Executors or Administrators within one yeare after the decease of Alice Lake my wife for the reasons in my said Will mentioned
And Whereas since the makeing of my said Will I have purchased of James Reader of Ashford in the said County of Kent Gentleman and others a Messuage Farme and lands in Goudhurst aforesaid now or late in the Tenure or occupation of Thomas Buggs of his Assignes or Undertenants

Now I the said Thomas Lake do by this my Codicill to my said last Will and Testament give unto my daughter Elizabeth Lake and her heires in lieu and place of the said One hundred pounds that I have given unto her by my said last Will, the said Messuage Farme and lands now in the possession of the said Thomas Buggs or his Assignes or undertenants To have and to hold unto the said Elizabeth Lake and her heires from and after the death of the said Alice Lake my wife
And I doe hereby discharge the Messuage lands and Tenements that I have by my said Will given unto my said daughter Alice Lake and her heires Executors and Administrators from the payment of the said One hundred pounds unto my said daughter Elizabeth Lake

And Whereas upon my daughter Frances Lakes Marriage to Thomas Hussey of Burwash in the County of Sussex Gentleman I gave unto my said daughter Frances the Principall Sume of Two thousand pounds which I then was intituled unto in the Capitall and Joint Stock erected by an Act of Parliament passed in the third yeare of his Majesty King George for redeeming severall duties and provisions etc. And attended with Annuities at foure per Cent per annum which said Sume of One Thousand pounds and produce thereof was to be the marriage portion of the said Frances Lake (and which portion happened to be subscribed into the South Sea Company and thereby it hath happened that the said Thomas Hussey and Frances his wife will be loosers
Now my desire is that Alice Lake my wife will consider of my said Sonn and daughter Thomas Hussey and Frances his wife said loss

and in witness to this my said Codicill to my said last Will and Testament which Codicill beares date the Tenth day of June in the yeare of our Lord One thousand seaven hundred and twenty six and is contained in twoe sheetes of paper And I have sett my hand and seale to each sheete thereof

Note: Thomas Lake Esq. was buried on 12 Dec 1726 & his widow Mrs Alice Lake was buried 26 Dec 1726, at Goudhurst.
