In the Name of God Amen
I Gideon Maude of Hothfield in the County of Kent Clerk being in a Reasonable good state of health of body sound and Reasoning mind and memory (praise be given to God for the same) do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in maner and form following (that is to say)
first and principally I resign my Soul into the Mercifull hands of Almighty God my Creator assuredly hoping through the meritts of my blessed Saviour to obtain remission of all my Sins and my body I comitt to the Earth whence it was taken to be decently buried by the discrecon of my Executrix hereinafter named
And as for the worldly goods and Estate the Lord hath lent me I dispose thereof as followeth

Imprimis I give and bequeath unto Margaret my dear Wife all my Freehold lands lying in Stanley in the Parish of Wakefield in the County of York to have and to hold during the term of her natural life
Item I give and bequeath unto Margaret my Said Wife All that my Messuage & lands lying in the parish of Westwell in the County of Kent that I lately purchased of Mr. Thomas and Mr. Francis Bull and now in the occupacon of William Herenden or his assigns to have and to hold during the term of her natural life

Item I give and bequeath unto Margaret my Said wife the Sume of one Hundred pounds due to me upon Bond from Doctor John Warren and for which his brother Doctor Richard Warren and his brother in Law Mr. Kenn Shrubsole stand bound

Item from and after the decease of Margaret my Said wife I give & bequeath all my Said Freehold lands lying in Stanley in the p'ish of Wakefield aforesaid in the County of York to my Loving Daughter and only Child Margaret Maud to have and to hold to her and her heirs for ever

Item I give and bequeath unto my said only Daughter Margaret Maude those four peeces or p'cells of Land that I purchased of Mr. Daniel Morton of Ashford containing by Estimacon ten Acres more or less
And also that one peece of Land Commonly Called by the Name of Harvil Cherry garden which I purchased of Mr. Thomas Bull of Ashford containing by Estimacon four Acres All which Said Five peeces of Land lye in the parish of Hothfield and are in my own occupacon to have and to hold to her and her heirs for ever

Item from and after the decease of Margaret my Said wife I give and bequeath to my said only Daughter Margaret Maude all that my Messuage and lands lying in the parish of Westwell in the County of Kent that I lately purchased of Mr. Thomas and Mr. Francis Bull to have and to hold to her and her heirs forever

Item I give and bequeath unto my Said Daughter Margaret the Sume of three hundred pounds which is now in the hands of Mr. Alexander Clare of Ashford Innholder and for which I have a Mortgage upon his house called The George Inne

Item Whereas I lately purchased of my Sister Bethulia Bourne Widow Administratrix of the Benisdeccon [Benediction?] of Mr. James Codd and of my Cousin Daniel Pemble Executor to his Mother Mrs. Jane Pemble first Cousin to the Said James Codd two Reversionary Annuities (in which Wm. Evelyn Esquire hath the life [interest]) the one of twenty eight pounds pannid. [per annum] and the other of Fourteen pounds p. annid [per annum] I give and bequeath the two reversionary Annuities to my said Daughter Margaret Maud

And if my Said daughter Margaret Maud shall happen to dye before she attain the Age of one and twenty years or be married then after the decease of Margaret my Said wife I give and bequeath unto my Godson Gideon Maude the Son of my brother Thomas Maude of Wakefield aforesaid deceased all my Freehold lands lying in the said parish of Wakefield And also those my four pieces of Land lying in Hothfield aforesaid that I purchased of Mr. Daniel Morton to have and to hold to him and his heirs foever

Item if my Said Daughter Margaret shall dye before She shall attain to the Age of one and twenty Years or be married then after the decease of Margaret my Said wife I give and bequeath unto my Godson Gideon Maude the Son of my brother Charles Maude of Sandhurst Clerk all that my messuage and lands lying in the parish of Westwell aforesaid that I purchased of Mr. Thomas and Mr. Francis Bull to have and to hold to him and his heirs forever

Item if my Daughter Margaret Shall dye before she attain to the Age of one and twenty Years or be married then after the decease of Margaret my said Wife I give and bequeath unto my Cousin Charles Maude Younger Son of my said brother Charles that peece of land called by the Name of Harvile Cherry garden lying on Hoathfeild aforesaid that I purchased of Mr. Thomas Bull of Ashford to have and to hold to him & his heirs for ever

Item I give and bequeath unto my Dear Wife Margaret Maude the fourth part of the Estate late of Mr. Thomas Pemble in Little Chart which I purchased of his Son James Pemble to have and to hold during the term of her naturall life
and from and after her decease I give and bequeath the Said fourth part of the Said Estate to my only daughter Margaret Maude to have and to hold To her and her heirs forever
But if my Daughter Margaret Shall happen to dye before She attain to the age of one and twenty Years or be married then form and after the decease of Margaret my said Wife I give and bequeath unto my Cousin Sarah Pemble the wife of my Cousin Daniel Pemble of Little Chart the said fourth part of the Estate late of Mr. Thomas Pemble deced. which I purchased of his Son James Pemble To have and to hold during the term of her naturall life
And from and after her decease I give and bequeath the said fourth part of the Estate of the late Mr. Thomas Pemble deceased which I purchased of his Son James Pemble to Thomas the Son of my Cousin Daniel Pemble to have and to hold to him and his heirs forever

Item Whereas there is in my hands one bond of ten pounds and another of Twenty pounds owing to me from my brother Thomas Maude late of Wakefield aforesaid deceased I give and bequeath them both with all the interest due upon them to my Sister Ruth the wife of John Landeskin of Wakefeild aforesaid and late wife of my Brother Thomas Maude deced. and to her three Daughters Sarah now wife of Daniel Pemble of Little Chart aforesaid Gent. Jane Maude and Amy Maude in even and equall porcons

Item Whereas there are in my hands three bonds one for Sixty Nine pounds Another for Eighty pounds and another for forty three pounds owing to me from my brother Charles Maude of Sandhurst aforesaid Clerke I forgive him all the Interest due upon them and desire my Executrixes if they find his Condicon in the World to be very mean and low to be very kind to him in the principall

Item If my Daughter Margaret Maude shall happen to dye before She attain to the Age of one and twenty Years or be married then if my Said wife Margaret her Mother be living I give and bequeath unto her those four peeces of Land lying in Hothfeild that I purchased of as aforesaid of Mr. Daniel Morton To have and to hold during the term of her naturall life

Item I give to the poor of the parish of Hothfeild the Sume of Five pounds to be given within Six months after my decease to Such of the poorest of them as the officers and Cheife of the Inhabitants of the Said parish shall think most want it
Item I give to the poor of the parish of Kenardington the Sume of Fifty shillings to be given within Six months after my decease to Such of the poorest of them as the officers and Cheife of the Inhabitants of the Said parish shall think most want it

Item I give and bequeath unto my very good friend and brother The Reverend Dr. John Grandorge Now Chaplain to the Right Honorable Thomas Easte of Thanet the four Volumes of Hugo Grotius which he was pleased some years ago to make me say and use? [bleedthrough damage] and also Thaest? Rixant Esquire his Translation of the Lives of the Popes from the time of our Saviour Jesus Christ to the Reign of Pictus the 4th written originally in Latine by Baptista Platina Native of Cernona

Item I give and bequeath unto my brother the Reverend Mr. John Winn Vicar of Boughton Aluph my two Volumes of Poles Cuticismer upon the New Testament and all of the works of Mr. Joseph Mede Batcheloure of Divinity being Five books in one Volume

Item I give and bequeath unto my Godson Gideon Maude the Son of my brother Thomas Maude late of Wakefeild aforesaid deceased the Sum of Ten pounds to be paid him within one Year after my decease
Item I give and bequeath unto my Godson Gideon Maude the Son of my brother Charles Maude of Sandhurst aforesaid Clerk the Sum of ten pounds to be paid him within one Year after my decease

Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mildred Taylor the wife of Mr. James Taylor of Westwell the Sume of Fifty shillings to be paid her within three months after my decease

And as for the residue of my goods and Ch'ells not hereinbefore bequeathed after my debts and funeral Expences are discharged I give them equally between Margaret my Dear Wife and Margaret my dear Daughter whom I make Joynt Executrixes of this my last Will and Testament Contained in two Sheets of paper Revoking all other Wills by me heretofore made

In testimony whereof I have hereunto putt my hand and Seal and to the former Sheet my hand only this four and twentieth day of August in the Seventh year of the Reign of our Soveraign Lord George King of Great Britain etc. Anno Domini 1720

Note: Daughter Margaret Maude (then of nearby Boughton Aluph) was married at Canterbury Cathedral on 5th July 1726 to John Harvey Gnt. of Eythorne (near Dover) by Dr. Grandorge (see Will) by Licence.
