July 20th 1796 I Ann Sayer Senr. of the Parish of St. Marys Northgate Canterbury being now in perfect mind and memory do write this as my last Will

and my desire is that my Son Jos[e]ph Sayer now living at Portsea [Hampshire] shall be my Executor to manage according to his discretion amongst my other Children what I die possessed of that is not give to them by Law

And first I give my said Son Jo[se]ph Sayer my Mahogany Bursar and a Note of hand of twenty five pounds on Mr. Isaac Clark, Schoolmaster at 5 per Cent with the Interest to hundred pound on Mortgage on the said Clark at five pr Ct.
I give as follows
to my Son Jos. Sayer Sixty pounds
to my Son Wm. Sayer Sixty pounds
to my daughter Phebe Ratcliff Forty pounds
to my daughter Ann Sayer Forty pounds

All my Cloaths to my daughter Ann Sayer, my Plate and China to be equally shared between them, all my Linen shared to Jos. Wm. and Ann
my Household Furniture to be Sold my debts and Funeral expences to be paid out of the produce, the residue of the money with what money their is in the house at the time of my decease to be equally shared to Jh. Wm. and Ann
either of (them) dying before me I desire their share to be equally divided to the Survivors and my desire is that no dispute should arise and that Gods blessing may attend you all
my Mourning Ring for my Son Joh. Sayer a plain Ring for Wm. plain do. [ditto] for Ann.
A pair of Silver Buckles mark'd J. S. for my Grandson Jos. Sayer the other pair for my Grandson Tho. Ratcliff
Ann Sayer July 20.

In case my Son Jos. Sayer should depart this life before me I desire my Grandson Jos. Sayer should have an equal share with my other Children.

9th December 1797
Appeared Personally William Sayer of Botolph Lane, London, Taylor and Easter Cooke of Holborn in the County of Middlesex Spinster and made Oath that they knew and were well acquainted with Ann Sayer late of the City of Canterbury Widow deceased for several years before and down to the time of her death which happened in the month of December 1796
and during such their knowledge of and acquaintance with her the said deceased they have often seen her write and also write and subscribe her name and having now viewed and perused the paper writing hereunto annexed purporting to be and contain the last Will and Testament and Codicil of the said deceased the said Will beginning thus:
“July 20th 1796 I Ann Sayer Senr. of the Parish of St. Marys Northgate Canterbury” and ending thus: “for my Grandson Jos. Sayer the other pair for my Grandson Tho. Ratcliff” and thus subscribed: “Ann Sayer July 20.”
The said Codicil beginning thus: “In case my Son Jos. Sayer should depart this life” and ending thus: “I desire my Grandson Jos. Sayer should have an equal share with my other Children”

they these deponents do jointly and severally depose that they verily believe the whole body series and contents of the said Will and the subscription thereto and also the whole body series and contents of the said Codicil to be of the proper handwriting and subscription of the said deceased
Wm. Sayer Easter Cooke
Same day the said William Sayer and Easter Cooke were duly Sworne to the truth hereof before me S. Parson, Surr. [Surrogate] Pst. [Present] Thos. Farier Not. Pub. [Notary Public]

This Will was Proved at London the twelfth day of December in the Year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and ninety seven before the Worshipful Samuel Pearce Parson, Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir William Wynne, Knight, also Doctor of Laws, Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oath of Joseph Sayer the Son of the deceased and the Sole Executor named in the Will to whom Administration was granted of all and singular the Goods, Chattels and Credits of the said deceased having been first Sworn duly to administer.

Notes:
Ann Sayer, Widow, was buried at St. Mary Northgate, Canterbury, Kent on 25th December 1796, aged 59.
Daughter Phebe Sayer of St. Mary Northgate, Canterbury, married John Ratcliff of St. Alphage, Canterbury on 2nd November 1786 by Licence. Witnesses were: Jop [Joseph] Sayer and Sarah Bligh
