James Smothinge of Harrietsham, Yeoman, will dated 10 May 1579
My body to be buried where it shall please god

I give & bequeathe unto Margaret my wife all my howshold stuff except two beddes with the steadelles, two of the best keene & one mare comonly called the bald mare
To my daughters Agnes Smothing & Jane Smothing unto either of them �8 6s 8d to be payd unto them within twelvemoneths after my decease and unto eyther of them one yong cowe
To my daughter Alice Smothing �11

To Joyn Wilmote my daughter Marian her daughter one mother ewe & a lamb to be delivered unto her within two moneths next after my decease
I give unto John Wilmote, Thomas Wilmote, Margery Wilmote & Elizabeth Wilmote children of the sayd Marian my daughter, unto ech of them one mother ewe
I give unto Thomas Coxe the sonne of my daughter Alice one mother ewe
To every godchild I have livenge 12d

I will that Margaret my wife shall have corne, wheate & malte & --- which is already in the howse to mayntayne the howsekepinge until the feast of St Michaell Tharchangell next cominge
I give unto the poremens boxe of Harrietsham 2s
Also I give unto the poore people of Harrietsham 13s 4d which I will that they shall have 6s 8d at my buriall & the residue within twelve moneths next after my decease

All the residue of my moveable goods unbequeathed, my debts & legacies discharged, I give unto Harry Smothing my son whom I make my whole Executor

I give unto James Balden one half rent of the howse
I give my daughter Marian one heiffer

I will unto Margaret my wife the profit & commodity of one peece of land called Somfeld lying at the fower ---- besides Greneway forstall to be had unto her during the term of her natural lyf & after her discease I give it nto William Smothing my sonne to be had to him and to his heires for ever

I will also that my wife Margaret shall during her naturall lyf have other six acres of land more or les belonging unto the howse where Robert Smothing my brother now dwelling paying unto the sayd Robart my brother such money as is due unto him out of the same at such tymes as --- And after the discease of the sayd Robart to have bothe the house which he now dwelleth in & the sayd six acres of landes for ---- tearme as is before sayd & further my sonne William Smothing to have the sayd howse & six acres of land after the dicease of his mother to be had unto him and his heires for ever

All the residue of my landes & tenements lying in Harrietsham or els where beinge unbequeathed, I give unto Harry Smothing my sonne to be hade to him & to his heires for ever

I will that that yf William my sonne doe dye before the age of twenty fower yeares without child of his body lawfully begotten then I will that all suche landes as I before bequeathed unto him shall remayne unto Harry Smothing my sonne to be had to him & to his heires for ever
