Notes
Henry was a sheep farmer, bequeathing his flock to various relatives and friends. He held a tenement and land at Newchurch in Romney Marsh. Newchurch is around 3 miles inland and around 11 miles WSW of Hawkinge. It seems Henry SUTTON lived at Hawkinge: he asked that he be buried in the churchyard there and left a bequest to the poor. This may mean he had a tenant for his land at Newchurch, which seems too far distant from Hawkinge for him to commute
Henry wrote his will on the 21st July 1553 at a time of great upheaval see wikipedia
On 6 July 1553, at the age of 15, Edward VI died...
On 10 July 1553, Lady Jane was proclaimed queen by Dudley and his supporters... Jane was deposed on 19 July.
How did Henry know that Mary was Queen of England? Had he assumed she would be or did he know that Jane had been queen briefly and had been deposed? If the latter it indicates how good communications were for the news to get to the Kentish coast.
