Notes
Giles was a farmer of sheep, cattle and pigs and also grew wheat and barley. His wife Joan
outlived him and they had a son Robert, who was made executor and was presumably 21.
The will is useful in recording the names of his brother Williams children: five of the eight
named in Williams will of 1571 are also named here: Thomas, William, Christopher, Joan and
Susan and this gives a likely sequence for the male births and then the girls, all born prior to
June 1561. William named three other children in 1570/1 - Ingram, Adam and Agnes born
between 1561 and 1570/1, and as noted previously baptisms of Ingram and Agnes have been
found at Hawkinge. Adams baptism has not been found but presumably was after that of Ingram.
The TYLER index includes as one of its first Hawkinge entries the marriage between Elizabeth
SUTTON of Hawkinge, daughter of Gylls SUTTON, to George HAMBROOKE of Hougham, 9
December 1560. A check of Hougham entries in the TYLER index shows the marriage was
also recorded there on 2 December 1560.
George HAMBROUKE , recipient of the cow, may be Giless son-in-law, or possibly the first
child of George and Elizabeth.
