Notes
Thomas SUTTONs bequests to his children are consistent with the baptisms found at Hawkinge, and provide evidence for a seventh child, Stephen
SUTTON, whose baptismal record presumably was recorded on a BT or ADT no longer extant. It is remarkable that all seven children survived to adulthood
and must indicate a robust family with sufficient resources to see them through.
Thomas, the youngest son, appears to have been favoured by his father, who appointed him the executor of his will and bequeathed him the
family home.
Another son William received a house and four acres of land I wonder if this could be the four acres (or three acres and three roods) recorded in the
Standen Valley area (letter of 8 September 2016); unfortunately I have not been able to locate the farm name, which appears to be Hamesole,
on 19th century OS maps. William may have been the second eldest son; his baptismal record has been found at Hawkinge but the year was lost,
being recorded as MCCCCC iiij score and .... Knowing that Thomas, youngest son, was baptised in 1590, and Elizabeth in 1586, it suggests William was born between 1581 and
1585 or 1587 and 1589.
Thomass will shows two of his daughters had married by this date: Mildred to a PHILPOT and Thomazine to a SLADDEN; both had a son by 1611. The
marriage of a Mildred SUTTON to Henry PHILPOT was at Dymchurch. The Tyler index entry dates this
marriage to 18 April 1604; another transcript has 16 April 1603.
FindMyPast has the marriage of Tamsin SUTTON to Robbert Slodden 4 Mar 1602/3 at St. Mary-Bredman Church, Canterbury and that Robert was of
Hythe, Thomazine of Hawkinge
Thomass third daughter Elizabeth SUTTON was around 25 in 1611 and wording suggests she was unmarried.
Thomas made further bequests to his son John and finally his son Stephen, with a proviso regarding the latter; wording suggests the relationship between
father and son was strained. In the event of his youngest son Thomass death the family home was to go to William.
John, baptised in 1571, was the eldest son, and it is likely he was established, possibly with earlier help from his father.
The second witness, Roger SUTTON, may be the yeoman who was buried at Hawkinge in 1617 and who also left a will.
