Also I give and bequeath to my [half-]Sister Susana Pettet widow ffive pounds for
mourning[.]
Also I give and bequeath to my servant Elizabeth Corbett spinster of Deal in the County
of Kent ffive pounds for mourning and ten pounds besides of lawful money of Great
Britain to be paid within a Month after my decease[.]
And also I give devise and bequeath
to the said Elizabeth Corbett spinster of Deal in the County of Kent all that my
ffreehold Messuage and Tenement and premises now in the occupation of Mrs.
Catharine Gurney as Tenant thereof to me situate lying and being in five Bell Lane in Deal
Kent To have and to Hold for her sole and separate use and benefit during the term of her
nat life without impeachment of waste to have receive and take rents Issues and Profits of
the said Messuage or Tenement with the appurtenances to the said Elizabeth Corbett for
her sole and separate use and benefit[.]
And from and immediately after the decease of
the said Elizabeth Corbett I give devise and bequeath the same Messuage or Tenement
with the Appurtenances unto George and ffrances Corbett illegitimate son and
daughter of the said Elizabeth Corbett spinster and in default of them unto my son
Charles Pye Turner and my daughters Mary Ann Orde and ffrances Turner[.]
Also I give and bequeath to the said Elizabeth Corbett Spinster all and singular my Household
Goods[,] Books[,] Linnen[,] China[,] furniture and utensils whatsoever and all my
Silver Table Spoons for her own use and Benefit[.]
The remainder of my plate I give and bequeath to my said children Charles Pye Turner[,] Mary Ann Orde and ffrances Turner to be equally shared between them[.]
And lastly after paying all my just debts as aforesaid and ffuneral Expenses and of the Legacies in this my will contained with the payment of all which I do hereby charge all my personal Estate I give devise and bequeath all and singular the rest[,] residue and remainder of my Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever unto George Corbett and ffrances Corbett illegitimate Children of the said Elizabeth Corbett spinster above mentioned to share equally alike or the survivor of either of them and in case of both of their deaths before they arrive to the age of twenty one years[,] unmarried[,] and without issue[,] then to be divided among my Children Charles Pye Turner[,] Mary Ann Orde and ffrances Turner equally alike or to the survivor of them[.]
I do desire that the said Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever shall within the space of one month after my decease be placed in one of the publick ffunds of this kingdom at the discretion of my Executrix and Executor hereinafter named[.] And that the Interest accruing and arising therefrom shall be applied towards their George Corbett and ffrances Corbetts Education and Maintenance respectfully until they severally attain the age of twenty one years or day or days of Marriage[.]
And I do hereby make[,] ordain[,] constitute and appoint the above Elizabeth
Corbett Executrix and William Hulk surgeon of Deal in Kent as Executor of this
my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former and other wills and
Testaments by me at any time heretofore made. In witness whereof I have to this
my last will and Testament set and subscribed my hand and Seal this 3rd day of
May 1800—Jno Turner—Signed Sealed Published and declared by the said testator
John Turner as and for his last will and Testament in the presence of us who at his
request in his presence and in the presence of each other subscribed our names as
witnesses thereto.

This Will was proved at London the twenty second day of January in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and two before the Right Honourable Sir William Wyane Knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oath of Elizabeth Corbett Spinster one of the Executors named in the said will to whom Administration of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the deceased was granted having been first sworn by Commission only to Administer power reserved of making the like Grant to William Hulk the other Executor named in the said will when he shall apply for the same.
[It is interesting to note that John Turner did not make his son Charles Pye Turner one of the executors of his estate. Instead the executors are his unmarried servant Elizabeth Corbett and William Hulke, surgeon, of Deal. William Hulke’s name appears to have been written in as an afterthought in the original will. Hulke subsequently renounced carrying out the probate of the will which left Elizabeth Corbett as the sole executor. John Turner’s wife, Ann Harrison Turner, is not mentioned at all in his will. She did, however, receive a naval officer’s widow’s pension after he died.]
[The following note was added to the clerk’s copy of John Turner’s will:]
On the 12th day of August 1820 [coincidentally(?) the date of death of Charles Pye Turner]
Admon (with the Will annexed) of the Goods Chattels and Credits of John Turner late of
Deal in the County of Kent and a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy decd left unadd by Elizabeth
Corbett spinster decd whilst living one of the Exors named in the said Will was granted to
George Corbett and Frances Corbett Spr the Residuary Legatees named in the said Will
having been first sworn by Comsr duly to admr. William Hulke (in the Will written
Hulk/ the other and surviving Exor named in the said Will having Renounced the probate of
this Will)
John Turner, son of John Turner and his wife, widow Mary Cullen Mocket, was baptised at
St Leonard’s parish church in Deal, Kent, on 6 July 1735. He married Ann Harrison, the
only surviving child of Thomas Harrison and Ann Pye Harrison Roby, at St Leonard’s in
Deal on 28 October 1769. John Turner was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Royal
Navy on 18 November 1790. He died on 15 November 1801 and was buried at St Leonard’s
on 20 November 1801.
