The Ancestry of Hattie E. J. Bruce - the Hagar Family

THE HAGAR FAMILY

WILLIAM HAGAR [#290], d. Watertown, MA 10 Jan 1683-4,[4/1:53] m. Watertown 20 Mar 1644-5[4/1:12] MARY BEMIS, d. Watertown, MA Dec 1695 "an aged woman".[4/2:14]

In the early records the family name was spelled "Hagar" although by the late 1600's the name was mostly spelled "Hager", which is the common form today. However, since our branch of the family appeared under the "Hagar" name, that is the form adopted here.

It is not known where William Hagar came from or when he arrived in New England. He was here by 1645 as the marriage of William and Mary was recorded in Watertown early that year. Mary Bemis' origins are also as yet unknown. She died "an aged woman" in Dec. 1695. According to the Bemis genealogy, Mary was the sister of Joseph Bemis and accompanied him to Watertown. He was born about 1619 which certainly would make him the right age to be her brother.[3] There is little mention of William in the Watertown records. The only office he appears to have held was when he was chosen surveyor of highways for 1676.[1/1:125] Unlike many of his contemporaries, William is not included in the inventory of Watertown lands, grants, and possessions between 1639 and the mid1640's. Whether because he was too young to own land, wasn't in the country yet, or was not able to afford land is not known.

William Hagar's will was dated Jan. 10, 1683-4, the same day he died, and proved April 1, 1684. In it are mentioned his daughters Ruhamah Waight, Hannah Priest, Susannah Grout, Sarah Whitney, Rebecca Healy, and Abigail and Mehitable Hagar. Also mentioned are sons Samuel and William Hager.[2/6:186] Inventory of the estate amounted to 353.14.0.[2/6:188]
