THE LATHROP FAMILY

JOHN LATHROP [#604], bap. Etton, Yorkshire, England 20 Dec 1584, d. Barnstable, MA 8 Nov 1653, m(1) (license) 10 Oct 1610 HANNAH HOUSE, d. 1634, m(2) Mrs. Ann Hammond, d. Barnstable 25 Feb 1687-8.

The name was sometimes written Lathrop, other times Lothrop and originated in the town of Lowthorpe, England. John Lathrop was born in Yorkshire, England in 1584.[1] He first entered Christ Church College, Oxford in 1601 but transferred to the more liberal Queen's College from which he graduated with a B.A. in 1605 and an M.A. in 1609.[5] He moved to Egerton, Kent, a town 48 miles southeast of London, where he was curate of the parish church. He left Egerton in 1623 apparently due to a distaste for the Church of England and became the minister of the First Independent Church of London, a church whose religion was not the same as the king's and thus was illegal. On April 22, 1632 the church's gathering was invaded by the authorities and forty-two members were taken into custody and were held in the old Clink prison in Newgate. In the spring of 1634 all but Reverend Lathrop were released on bail. However, his wife apparently became sick and died about this time and he was temporarily released to care for the children.[1]

Reverend Lathrop made his escape to America in 1634 as indicated from Governor Winthrop's journal entry of Sept. 18, 1634: "The Griffin and another ship now arriving with about 200 passengers. Mr. Lathrop and Mr. Sims, two godly ministers coming in the same ship". He moved to Scituate, about 10 miles south of Boston, on Sept. 27, 1634 where on Jan. 19, 1634-5 he was officially made the pastor.[1]

It's probable that John's first wife was named Hannah House.[2] He remarried sometime prior to June 14, 1635 as on that date his wife Anna was admitted to the church at Scituate. For his consenting to be the minister, he was granted a farm in Scituate.

John Lathrop was made a freeman and took oath on March 7, 1636-7 in Scituate.[3/1:53,60] On Jan. 1, 1637-8 certain freemen of Scituate, including John Lathrop, complained to the Court that they were allotted such small portions of land that they could not subsist on them. The Court of Assistants granted them upland and a neck of land lying between the North and South Rivers provided upon the condition that they make a township there and inhabit the said land.[3/1:72] John moved with others in Oct. 1639 and this became the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod. He was granted a four acre lot in this town upon which he built a small house. A larger house was built in 1644.[1] On March 7, 1653-4 Mrs. Lathrop was granted letters of administration on the estate of Mr. John Lathrop, deceased.[3/3:46]

John maybe had a daughter Elizabeth whose birth was not recorded. From the court records of 1665 we find that "Whereas John Williams, Junr, appeered before the Court held att Plymouth the seaventh of June last past before the date heerof, to answare for his disorderly liveing with his wife, and his abusive carriages towards her both in words and actions, in speciall his sequestration of himselfe from the marriage bedd, and that notwithstanding the Court then tooke such order about it as was judged meet for present, yett the said Williams not attending that due reformation expected from him, wherby Mr Barnabas Laythorpe hath seen cause, in the behalfe of his sister and those related to her, to revive the former complaint, with some aditionall charges; to which the said Williams, though seeming to desire the tryall of such his guiltines or not guiltines might bee put on a jury of his peers, yett afterwards refused it when graunted to him by the Court; this Court, being earnestly desirous of a renewed closure of his hart and affections to his wife, and that his future conversation with her might bee better then his former, were willing to extend what lenitie might bee, and in reference therunto, with exhortation of him to amend his wayes respecting the promises, hee was released att the present". It seems that when Elizabeth became pregnant or bore a child, her husband John accused her of unfaithfulness. She was "by false reports and reproaches rendered as if shee were a dishonest woman, and that the child shee brought forth into the world was not legitimate". The court found no substance to the accusations and cleared her name.[3/4:107]

Thomas Lathrop emigrated to America with his father and lived at Scituate where a record from his father's church states: "My Sonn Thomas Lathropp joined May 4, 1637". He later moved with his family to Barnstable on the Cape in 1639. John Lathrop also recorded Thomas' marriage: "My sonn Thomas and brother Larnett's daughter, widow Ewer, were married in the Bay Dec. 11, 1639". The Bay refers to Boston.[1]

On June 7, 1642 Thomas Lathrop was sworn as the constable of Barnstable.[2/2:34,40] He was also a surveyor of highways there in 1642 and was also constable in 1665.[2/4:91] He was admitted freeman June 3, 1656 and served on the Grand Enquest at the same time.[2/3:100101] In 1667 Thomas Lathrop and Shuball Linnitt were ordered to administer upon the estate of Thomas Ewer and be guardians to the children.[2/4:153] This Thomas was his step-son. The Ewer family, including Sarah (Learned) Ewer, came to America in 1635 in the James and settled first in Charlestown.[3/18]
