THE MAYNARD FAMILY

JOHN MAYNARD [#268], b. Eng., d. Sudbury, MA 10 Dec 1672, m(1) ____, m(2) Sudbury 16 Jun 1646[8/233] Mary Axtell, widow of Thomas Axtell.

John Maynard probably brought a wife and one or more children with him to America. If so, the wife died soon because he was a widower with a boy 8 years old in 1638. He was one of the settlers who went to Sudbury Plantation in 1638 or 1639. His home lot of four acres was located in what is now Wayland at the junction of Old Mill Road (South St.) and Northwest Row (North St.), the road to Concord, adjacent to the homelot of Henry Rice. He was one of the 47 who shared in the division of Sudbury meadows in 1639.[1] John became a freeman in 1644 and was a fence-viewer soon after 1655.[7/42] On Jan. 4, 1655 he was granted land in the second squadron of the new grants, in what is now called Maynard. He received lot 22 of 130 acres, bounded on the north by the Concord line and south by the Lancaster highway.[2/65] In May 1656 he was one of 13 petitioners for land in what is now called Marlboro.[1]

John Maynard died in Sudbury on December 10, 1672. His will was dated Sept. 4, 1672 and proved April 1, 1673. In it are mentioned his eldest son John Maynard, son Zachery, wife Mary, daughter Elisabeth wife of Joseph Graves, daughter Lydia wife to Joseph Moore, and youngest daughter Mary, not yet married. His wife Mary and son Zachery were named joint executors. "My trusty friends Deacon John Haines, and Joseph Noys both of Sudbury" were to be supervisors to assist the executors. The will was witnessed by Henry Locker and John Toll.[5/4:24] The inventory of the estate was taken Dec. 30, 1672 by Edmund Goodenow, John Haines, and Joseph Noyes and came to 263 pounds.5/4:27]

The town of Maynard was named for John's descendant Amory Maynard, born Marlboro Feb. 28, 1804, son of Isaac and Lydia (Howe) Maynard.[7/83] Isaac was the proprietor of the Maynard Mills,[7/71] which later became the headquarters of Digital Equipment Corporation.

JOHN MAYNARD [#134], b. England abt. 1630, d. Marlborough, MA 22 Dec 1711, m(1) Sudbury, MA 5 Apr 1658[7/233] MARY GATES (dau. of Stephen Gates and Ann Veare), bap. Hingham, England 15 Oct 1636, d. Marlborough abt. 1678, m(2) Sudbury abt. 1679 Sarah (Blandford) Keyes, b. Sudbury 27 Jan 1642-3, d. after 18 May 1703.

John Maynard was eight years old in 1638 when his father brought him to Sudbury. He married there in 1658 and moved to Marlborough soon after. On Nov. 26, 1660, out of a total of 993 1/2 acres granted to 38 persons, he drew 23 acres located southeasterly of the meeting house, west of the house lot of John Woods, being near the east village on the road towards what later became Southborough. On Oct. 29, 1686 he was listed as one of the proprietors of Ockoocangansett Plantation, later called Maynard and, with Richard Barnes and John Brigham, was ordered to lay out the land of the plantation and order the highways.[2/94] He was most likely the John Maynard who was a selectmen in 1707 and 1710.[2/279] The will of John Blandford of Sudbury, dated Oct. 21, 1687, mentions his daughter Maynard, and the will of Dorothy Blandford of Marlborough, dated Dec. 29, 1694, bequeathed to "daughter Sarah Mainard where i now am and where I have been well treated ever since I came from Sudbury, wife of John Mainard, Sr.".[1] On March 18, 1691-2 John Maynard was assigned to a garrison in Marlborough of twelve men, including his son John and headed by Ensign John Woods.[4] The assignment was due to the first French and Indian War. John's name appears on a tax list of 1668 for the town of Marlboro. His tax was just over 11 shillings and signed he the list as one of the selectmen.[5]

John's will was dated May 18, 1703 and names his four sons John, Simon, David, and Zachariah; two daughters Hannah Davennport and Elizabeth Brigham, youngest son Joseph; two youngest daughters Sarah and Lydia Maynard; Rachel Wheeler, a servant of some kind; Two grand children Mary Woods and Elizabeth Woods; and wife Sarah. John further requested his "Loving ffriends, John Woods senr and Isaac Amsden senr & James Woods to be overseers to this my last will and testament". The will was witnessed by Jonathan Woods, Sr., James Woods, and Isaac Amsden, Sr.[3/13:440] A codicil to the will, dated March 6, 1708, mentioned James, son of John's son John. The inventory of the estate, taken Jan. 4 and proved Jan. 9, 1711-2 by Isaac Temple, Simon Gates, and Isaac Amsden, totaled 347.14.06.[3/13:446]
