The Ancestry of Hattie E. J. Bruce - the Parmenter Family

THE PARMENTER FAMILY

JOHN PARMENTER [#266], b. probably Sible Hedingham, Essex, England abt. 1588, bur. Roxbury, MA 1 May 1671, aged 83, m(1) England abt. 1609 BRIDGET ____, d. Sudbury, MA 6 Apr 1660, m(2) Roxbury 9 Aug 1660 Annis (Bayford) (Chandler) Dane (dau. Franics Bayford and Joan), bap. Farnham, Essex, England 12 Jun 1603, d. Roxbury 15 Mar 1683. She m(1) Bishops-Stortford, Hertfordshire, England 29 Jan 1621-2 as second wife of William Chandler, m(2) Roxbury, MA 2 Jul 1643 John Dane, bur. 14 Sep 1658.

John Parmenter was born evidently about 1588, as the baptism of his oldest brother, Robert, is recorded at Little Yeldham Oct. 23, 1586, and yet by October 12, 1613, John was old enough to be married and the father of two children, Mary and John, according to the will of his father, William Parmenter. He died May 1, 1671, aged 83, according to the church records of Roxbury, which furnishes further evidence for his birth around 1588. John inherited lands from his father. After the father's death John apparently moved about eight miles from Little Yeldham to Bures St. Mary. Here his sister Sarah was married to John Gressall who, in his will of July 9, 1625, bequeathed a cow to his brother-in-law John Parmenter. On Feb. 22, 1630-1 John was witness to the will of Henrie Loker, glover.[1]

In 1638 John Parmenter with his family and also the widow and children of Henrie Loker emigrated to New England and settled in Sudbury, MA, where he was among the first settlers. He was the second deacon of the Sudbury Church and was one of a committee appointed Sept. 4, 1639 to lay out lands. John was admitted freeman May 13, 1640, and the same year was a commissioner to end small causes. He was also a Selectman and held other positions of trust.[1] Deacon John Parmenter received lot 21 (just south of John Maynard's lot 22) in the second squadron division of 1655. These lots were each 130 acres.[5/65]

A comparison of the signatures of John Parmenter, the witness in the will of Henry Loker with an autograph signature of Deacon John Parmenter as a commissioner of Sudbury shows that the two signatures were made by the same hand. John Parmenter was licensed to keep a house of common entertainment in 1653-4. In 1654 Edmund Rice "for service as Deputy" was to have "six pounds to be paid in wheat at John Parmenter's". The Parmenter Tavern was the first tavern in that part of Sudbury, which is now Wayland. It was a large square house and was still standing in 1810, and was old looking then. It was located not far from Whale's Bridge.[1]

In the summer of 1660 he removed from Sudbury to Roxbury where he lived the last 10 years of his life. His will, dated March 25, 1671, proved July 25, 1671, names wife Annis, daughter Mary Woods wife of John Woods, grandson John Parmenter, cousin Bartholomew Cheevers shoemaker of Boston, and cousin John Stibbins.[1]
