Isaac Stearns' pedigree has not been ascertained, but his wife was the daughter of John and Margaret Barker of Stoke Nayland, Suffolk, England, and the baptism of three of the Stearns children appears on the register of that parish.[2] In 1640 "Isaacke Sterne of Watertown in New England planter sometimes of Stoke Nayland in the County of Suffolke tayler and Mary his wife daughter of John Barker late of Stoke Nayland aforesaid clothier deceased" made a letter of attorney to Thomas Gilson of Sudbury, Suffolk, baker, to receive and recover from ____ Munnings of Gaynes Colne, Essex, the sum of five pounds due to Mary "by some bond covenant or agreement made by the said Munnings before or upon his marriage wth Margaret Barker mother of the said Mary".[7/2912] On April 8, 1630 Isaac Stearns and his family embarked at Yarmouth, England in the ÿArabellaÿ and arrived in Salem June 12, 1630. Isaac was in the company of Sir Richard Saltonstall, Governor Winthrop, Reverend George Phillips, and many others. Not satisfied with conditions at Salem, the company soon proceeded to Charlestown and Watertown. This is how Isaac Stearns came to be among the first settlers in Watertown, near Mount Auburn.[2/622]

Isaac was admitted a freeman on May 18, 1631, the earliest date of any such admission. On December 5, 1638 he and John Page were fined five shillings for "turning the way about" (i.e. for diverting a highway). In 1647 he and John Biscoe were appointed by the Selectmen "to consider how the bridge over the river shall be built, and to agree with the workmen for doing it, according to their best discretion".[5/1:11] Isaac Stearns held several town offices. He was a selectman for Watertown in 1648,[5/1:10] 1659,[5/1:59] 1670,[5/1:95] and 1671.[5/1:102] He was a constable in 1652,[5/1:24] 1660,[5/1:65] and 1661.[5/1:72] Isaac was also surveyor of highways in 1663.[5/1:75]

Isaac had extensive land holdings. The first inventory of grants and possessions in Watertown, taken in or before 1639, reveals he had 461 acres at the time. These included 1) a homestall of ten acres bounded on the west with the highway, east with Pequusset Meadow, north with John Warren, and south with John Biscoe; 2) ten acres of upland bounded south by John Biscoe, north by John Warren, east with Pequusset Meadow, and west with the way leading to Concord; 3) two acres in Pequusset Meadow bounded east by William Hammond, west with his own upland, north by John Warren, and south by Edmund James; 4) Two acres in Pond Meadow bounded east by John Page and south by Robert Lockwood. This land was bought from Richard Kemball; 5) four acres in little Plaine Meadow bounded north and east by John Whitney and south by John Page. Two of these acres were bought from John Thompson and Garret Church; 6) a homestall of three acres bounded east by William Paine, west by John Goffe, north with Pond lane, and south by the highway; 7) fifty acres of upland being a great Divident in the fourth division and the 15th lot; 8) twenty-seven acres of upland beyond the further plain, lot number 4; 9) twelve acres of plowland in the further plain, lot 67; 10) twelve acres of meadow in the remote meadows, lot 5; 11) ten acres of meadow in the remote meadows, lot 6, bought from Thomas Rucks; 12) sixty acres of upland being a great Divident in the third division, lot 25, bought of Thomas Rucks; and 13) a farm of 259 acres of upland in the third division.[6/1:22] Isaac may have disposed of some of his lands by 1644 when the second inventory was taken or they were left out as some others appear to have been. His homestall had increased to twelve acres, but possessions 4 and 11-13 were gone as were the two acres bought of Thompson and Church. Thomas Boyden had replaced Edmund James as the neighbor on the south of the two acres in Pequusset meadow and the 12 acres of plowland were described as bounded north with the highway, south with the river, east by John Kingsbury, and west by Miles Nutt.[6/1:7778] The list of his possessions in the third inventory, taken about 1646, only listed three lots totaling 72 acres.[6/1:117]

Isaac's will was dated June 14, 1671 and mentions wife Mary, sons John, Isaac, and Samuel, daughters Mary Learned (deceased), Sarah Stone, Elizabeth Manning, and Abigail Morse, grand child Isaac Learned, and kinsman Charles Stearns. It was witnessed by William Bond, Sr. and John Biscoe, Sr..[4/4:142] Apparently Isaac Stearns was a man of some affluence as his estate was appraised at 524.04.08 even after he had given sizable gifts to each of his seven children. The inventory was taken June 28, 1671 by William Bond, Sr., John Biscoe, Sr., and Henry Freeman and included 14 lots of land of 467 acres.[4/4:144]

Charles Stearns was admitted freeman in Watertown May 6, 1646. He was elected constable of Watertown in 1680-1 but refused to take the oath and moved soon after to Lynn, MA. Charles named sons Isaac, John, and Samuel. One tradition was that three brothers, Daniel, Isaac, and Shubael, came to Massachusetts in 1630. Daniel died unmarried, and Shubael died leaving sons Charles and Nathaniel, 8 or 10 years old, who were cared for by their uncle Isaac.[8/3435] Nathaniel moved to Dedham.[8/342]

Mary Barker's English ancestry can be found in the overseas ancestors section.

Samuel married Hannah Manning, eldest daughter of William and Dorothy Manning of Cambridge, and sister to Samuel Manning, who married Elizabeth Stearns, sister to Samuel. He settled on a farm at the northwest corner of the cross-roads made by the roads from Cambridge to Waltham and by that going north to Lexington.[2/4545]

Samuel died at a young age but nonetheless held many offices of trust in Watertown. He was chosen surveyor of highways in 1666;[4/1:86] surveyor of cattle, fences, and hogs 1669;[4/1:93] constable in 1670;[4/1:96] selectmen in 1673,[4/1:112] 1675,[4/1:121] 1676,[4/1:125] 1678,[4/1:132] 1679,[4/1:136] 1682,[4/2:10] and 1683;[4/2:13] town appraiser 1676[4/1:125] and 1678.[4/1:132] He was first referred to as "corporal" in 1683.[4/2:13] On July 10, 1694 Phillip Shattuck was ordered to "take care of the Widdow Relict of Samll Sternes with her Children and provide for them from this Day for one month (they being Represented Poor and in necessity of Reliefe)"[4/2:76]

Watertown records list the date of death of Corporal Samuel Stearns as the last of August 1682,[5/1:54] but the inventory of the estate has the death date as August 21. Inventory of his estate was taken Sept. 28, 1683 by Samuel Stone, John Mose (probably Morse), William Bond, Sr., and John Biscoe and totaled 481.04.00.[3/6:136]

John Stearns resided on the homestead of his father[2] and died in 1729. Inventory of his estate was taken early in 1731 by Thomas Straight, John Coolidge, and Samuel Pearce. It amounted to 952.3.10 of which 751 pounds were in real estate and was sworn to June 13, 1732 by the widow, Abigail Stearns.[3/19:348] A committee was appointed to appraise John's real estate. It was made up of Joseph Mason, Deacon Nathan Fiske, Deacon John Coolidge, Lt. Samuel Stearns, and Samuel Pierce. Josiah Stearns, one of the sons of the deceased, showed the property to the committee.[3/20:280] Josiah was the second son of John and was to receive two thirds of the estate and to pay their shares to his brothers and sisters. Son John was to receive a double share as the eldest son.[3/20:281]

Josiah Stearns was a blacksmith and farmer. He settled on the homestead that once belonged to his father.[2] He kept the town pound in 1739,[4/3:195] was a tithingman in 1740[4/3:218] and was constable in 1743.[4/3:258] In 1744 Josiah was paid "for mending the Irons of ye Stocks mending ye pound mending the hangings for ye Bel and for a Stick of Timbr for a Whelm in Whitneys Lane".[4/3:306] He was a Selectman in 1754 and 1755. In 1750 he was appointed guardian of his brother Joseph Stearns who was insane.

Josiah died at the age of 51, and he left no will. The first inventory of his estate, taken Dec. 10, 1756 by Daniel Whitney, Nathaniel Harrington, and Jedidiah Leathe, included blacksmith tools and equipment, Willard's Body of Divinity, Wm. Perkin's work, 3 books by John Showers, Dickinson, & Cooper, Sundry old books & pamphlets, old Law Books. It also included "1 Dwelling House & ye Shingles Barn & ye Smiths shop & about 30 acres of upland called the Homestid" valued at 2120 pounds. Total real estate was 3610 pounds, personal estate was 1150.19.0.[3/34:138] These numbers seem rather high by comparison to other probate actions of the time. They may have seemed out of line with the court as well since a second inventory was taken March 26, 1758. This time the house, barn, shop, and 27 acres were valued at 287.15.1. Total real estate was 545.13.3. Widow Mary Stearns and son Phineas Stearns were made administrators. The estate was divided among five sons and four daughters, namely Josiah, John, Phineas, Jonas, Peter, Dorotha, Susannah, Relief, and Mary. This inventory and division were done by Samuel Livermore, Samuel Fisk, Daniel Whitney, Nathaniel Harrington, and Edward Harrington.[3/39:273]

Jonas Stearns was a cabinet-maker and a deacon in the congregational church.[2] He was a resident of Lunenburg, MA by 1758 and married Submit Davis of Lunenburg on May 4, 1758[1/259] by (probably) his uncle, Rev. David Stearns, who was ordained the minister in Lunenburg in 1728. The intention of their marriage was published April 15 of that year.[1/238] The family moved first to Shirley, MA then to Chesterfield, NH in 1768, where they settled on a farm about one mile southwest of Centre Village.[4] Chesterfield is in the southwest corner of New Hampshire just west of Keene. Jonas probably moved to Lunenburg shortly after his father's death in 1756 to stay with his uncle Rev. David Stearns. Jonas is burried in the Old Burying Ground of Chesterfield near the common. His stone reads: "In memory of Deac'n Jonas Stearns, who died Sept. 15, 1782" (the rest of the stone is in the ground)[7/14]

Jonas was a soldier in the American Revolution. He belonged to Captain Bezabeel Eager's Co. of Westborough, MA. On June 13, 1776 in Chesterfield, Jonas with others of his town signed a declaration against the British. Jonas died in Chesterfield on September 13, 1782 and was buried in the Old Burying Ground near the Common. Inventory of his estate was taken January 18, 1783 and amounted to 254.13.3. His gravestone reports that he was 46 years old when he died, however Watertown records list the year of his birth as 1738, which would make him 44 in 1782. His widow became the guardian of Submit, Sarah, Relief, and Polly, the children under the age of 14. She was still in Chesterfield in 1795 but had removed to Marlborough, VT by 1812.
