WELCOME to the CIVIL-WAR discussion and genealogy LIST
********************************************************
A
DISCUSSION GROUP FOR HISTORICAL ISSUES CONCERNING
THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
AND
GENEALOGY IN REGARDS THE PARTICIPANTS.
Here are
some Guidelines for posting.
Usually a flame war erupts if the guidelines are not followed.
The list is unmonitored, that is, nobody reviews the messages before they are sent.
GUIDELINES
NOTE
When in my naiveté I originally composed
these guidelines it never occurred to me
to address profanity and direct abuse. This Note corrects that omission.
AT THE FIRST POSTING OF
VULGAR WORDS
(Your own or someone else's)
OR
PEJORATIVE COMMENTS
REFERRING IN A DISRESPECTFUL WAY TOWARDS ANOTHER'S RACE
OR RELIGION, THE OFFENDER WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE LIST.
There will be no discussion, arbitration or second chances.
Now on to the original Guidelines.....
When you send a message to the list ask yourself what is my purpose?
1) Is it to edify the members as to information relative to the Civil War,
unknown to the members, which they might want to know?
or..........
2) Is it to request from the members information a member may have which one
of us, as a member, doesn't know?
By all means post it to the List!
ON THE OTHER HAND
Is it to answer someone who has written something which, in YOUR eyes, is
provocative, ignorant, stupid, or have nothing to do with the Civil War?
THEN
If you feel like responding, send a message to the *INDIVIDUAL* Not the list.
or the best response is always to
Hit the delete key.
OBNOXIOUS EMAILS
The application of the above rule can result in a member receiving
a vulgar or obnoxious message. There is NO way the list owner or
Rootsweb can prevent someone who wishes to from
sending an
email to someone.
The only recourse a recipient of an offending email has is to notify the
internet service provider (ISP) where the offending message originated
and hope the ISP takes action to stop the sender from repeated such an
offense. The notification should be made immediately. The ISP keeps
logs of all emails for 24-48 hours and then deletes them making a
trace impossible. The ISP of the offending email is found by looking
at the email address (@) of the sender. "[email protected]" is sent from the ISP Microsoft Network. Others are @aol.com which is AOL and @earthlink.net which is Earthlink etc. In general if you send a message to the webmaster of the ISP they will respond by removing or disabling the message sender's ability to send messages (if they agree the email you received violates their rules)NOTE: If a vulgar or obnoxious message is posted to the list, the listowner will respond off list to the offender and either remove them from the list If any list member feels the list owner is not responding appropriately they may address
the listowner DIRECTLY TO THE LISTOWNER'S EMAIL.>>DO NOT POST DIRECTLY TO THE LIST!<<
Remember no one is getting paid to do this, the list costs nothing except
your ISP time, it is a free service of Rootsweb.com and the only place I
know of where this type of information is exchanged.
The
Following subjects guarantee a FLAME WAR.....if
all participants do not respect other member's
rights to the opposite viewpoint.
The Constitution
The Bible
States Rights
Emancipation of Slaves
The KKK
The Confederate Battle flag as a symbol for prejudice
General Sherman as the incarnate devil
Robert E Lee as a traitor or Lincoln as a saint and vice versa.
Damn Yankees or Damn Rebels
The White Man's treatment of Native Americans
That being said, a LITTLE provocative DISCUSSION is not bad, just stop for
one moment and read what you wrote -- before you blurt out something you
regret to to 500 people 498 of which aren't interested.
After all we wouldn't want the list to be dull either! Just don't make it Personal!
The big difference is Argue vs Discussion.
Any new information on the Civil War is welcomed.
Email me any time
