Family Chronology

FAMILY CHRONOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

I prepared this chronology of my ancestors' movements to share with my extended family, but decided to post it in case the surnames might be of interest to others. This is a year-by-year account of the documented (for the most part) events in the lives of my SULLIVAN and KERRIGAN families from 1838 to 1944: births, marriages, deaths, emigration. The SULLIVANs and allied families emigrated from County Clare. My KERRIGAN and related families emigrated from counties Tyrone and/or Fermanagh, and Donegal.

1838: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

Mary McCormack, daughter of Michael McCormack and Catherine Carmody, was married to John Mescall on 26 February according to the Kilkee/Doonbeg(1) parish register. Their first son, Patrick, was born and baptized in December 1838; his baptismal sponsors were Patrick and Johanna McNamara

1841: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

George Cunningham married Bridget McCormack, sister of Mary (McCormack) Mescall, on 03 AUGUST; the record is found in the register of the Catholic parish of Kilkee/Doonbeg. George and Bridget, my great grandparents, would later emigrate to the United States and settle in New Britain, Connecticut. A son Simon, was born to John and Mary Mescall on 21 February at Clohanes, civil parish of Killard. His baptismal sponsors were James Carmody and Jane Crowe. I believe him to be the Simon Meskell who married Margaret Geary in New Britain, Connecticut in 1874.

1845: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

A daughter, Mary, was born to John and Mary Mescall, and was baptized on 09 January; her baptismal sponsors were Thomas and Jony[sic] McCormack.

1847: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

A son, William, was born to George and Bridget Cunningham. James Mescall was born to John and Mary Mescall in this year; his baptismal sponsors were Thomas McCormack and Catherine Carmody.

1850: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

John Meskell, son of John Meskell and Mary McCormack, was born on 15 August; he would later marry Mary Dawson in New Britain.

1851: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

In February a daughter, Bridget, was born to George and Bridget Cunningham; her baptismal sponsors were John Mescall and Mary McNamara. I assume that she died fairly young, as another child named Bridget was born to the couple in March 1857.

1852: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

A son Patrick Meskell was born to John and Mary McCormack Mescall; he would later marry Hannah O'Brien and settle in Meriden, Conn.

1853: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

A daughter, Ellen Cunningham, was born to George and Bridget. She would eventually marry Thomas Lynch.

1854: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

Michael Cunningham was born in September to George and Bridget. He would die of tuberculosis in New Britain in 1882.

1856: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

It is probable that my great grandfather Cornelius Sullivan was born in this year. In the 1881 census for the county of Essex, England he gives his age as 25 at his last birthday.(2)

1857: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

Bridget Cunningham, daughter of George and Bridget, was baptized in the Catholic parish of Doonbeg on 29 MARCH; baptismal sponsor was Ellen Cunningham

1857: CO. DONEGAL, IRELAND

Mary McGrath, daughter of William McGrath and Winifred Mullen, was born on (possibly) 18 July 1857. The month and year are extremely difficult to decipher.

On 31 December Catherine O'Dea(3), daughter of John O'Dea and Hannah McCormack, was baptized in the Catholic parish of Doonbeg; baptismal sponsors were Patrick McCormack(4) and Catherine Mescall.

1859: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

William Cunningham, brother of George Cunningham, married Mary Hartney on 10 April.

1865: CO. CLARE, IRELAND

Another daughter, Margaret, was born to George and Bridget Cunningham on 09 February in Craggaknock registration district; the family was renting land at Carrowmore North. Margaret would die of tuberculosis in New Britain in 1889.

1868: IRELAND>GLASGOW>NEW YORK

On 28 JUNE James Kerrigan, of Ireland, arrived at New York, a passenger on board the steamship Caledonia from Glasgow. He was listed as a laborer, age 20 years.(5) Later that year, Ellen McCann, of Ireland, age 20, a passenger on the steamer Iowa from Glasgow, arrived at New York on 12 October.(6) It is by no means certain that James and Ellen are my great grandparents, but their ages and the year of immigration roughly corresponds to other information, so they are in the running.

1869/70: MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT

Michael Carrigan appears in the Meriden City Directory, residing at the Astor House on Cook's avenue. I have no proof that this is our Michael Kerrigan, son of John and Bridget, but it is known that some family members were in Meriden before coming to New Britain.

1870: MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT

Ellen McKann, age 23, servant, born in Ireland, is enumerated in the 1870 Federal census in the household of Hiram Yale, at the corner of Broad and Liberty streets. I can't be sure that she is my great-grandmother Ellen McCann, but her age corresponds to other information. Michael Keragan is enumerated in the same census, age 21, gardener, in the household of F.A. Breckinridge. He is possibly the brother of my great-grandfather James Kerrigan.

1871: BERLIN, CONNECTICUT

Mary Kerrigan, daughter of John Kerrigan and Mary Ann O'Neill, was born on 15 August. This information is from the index to births; I still have to get her birth and baptismal records. I believe she died before 1880, as she is not listed in the family on the 1880 census.

William Cunningham, brother of George, appears in the City Directory, living at East Dublin, and John McNamara(7) appears at Stanley.

1872: MERIDEN

James Kerrigan married Ellen McCarlin at St. Rose of Lima Church on June 13th; witnesses were Charles Mackin and Mary Kerrigan.  My great grandmother's maiden surname was McCann, not McCarlin. However, some town clerks evidently had difficulty with her Irish accent, and her surname changed at times with each new birth of a child. James Kerrigan, although a New Britain resident at the time of his marriage at St. Rose, settled first in Meriden (according to his obituary).

1872/73: NEW BRITAIN

John Carrigan, probably my great-great-grandfather, appears in the City Directory, living at Grove near North; his son James Kerrigan appears also for the first time in the City Directory living at Washington, corner of North; John Miskell appears in the City Directory for the first time at Washington above North.

1875: BERLIN

On 22 June of this year, John Corrigan, son of John and Mary Ann (O'Neill) Corrigan, was born in Berlin. I believe he is later known as Michael Kerrigan. There are no further records for "John," but "Michael" turns up on the 1880 census. I hope to get his baptismal record from St. Mary Church.

She was registered as Jane Corrigan. She is later listed on the 1880 census as Anna J., and married as Anna Nancy Kerrigan.
