Notes: Jacobus
brought his wife Adrianna and their children to the United States in 1904.
Their ocean voyage left from Amsterdam and 14 days later landed in
Hoboken, New
Jersey. The family made their way to New York City, where they
boarded a train
bound for DePere, Wisconsin. They lived there for six months
where Jacobus worked
in a brick yard. He heard of an opportunity to be a farm share
cropper for a man
named Rice and late in 1904 Jacobus moved his family to Loretto, Minnesota.
Mr. Rice apparently wasn't the most honest man, so the years Jacobus
worked for
him grew to be a hardship. Father August Van den Heuvel, the
parish priest of Sts.
Peter and Paul in Loretto, told the Dousi family of a newly formed
community, settled
mostly by colonists from The Netherlands. In 1915, under the
sponsorship of the
Crosier Fathers, Jacobus once again moved his family to a farm in
Butler, Minnesota.
The trip was made by train, with all their household belongings and
farm equipment
packed into one box car. Their cattle were transported in another
car. The cows
were milked on the train according to their regular schedule. The
train station was
in Perham, Minnesota, 15 miles from Butler, so the family had to
complete their
journey by wagon. The farm that the Dousi family settled on
was the first of two
farms that Jacobus owned in the Butler area.
