Notes: It is
assumed that James was born at Cools, which is a small townland in the civil
parish of Prior, Poor Law Union of Cahirciveen, Barony of Iverah.
In the 1834
census of Cools, there are 3 Sughrue households listed out of 11
total households
in Cools. The 3 Sughrue heads of household were Cornelius,
Humphrey and John.
In the 1901 census, it remained 3 Sughrue households, headed by
Con, Batt and
John. By using the typical Irish naming traditions, whereby
the oldest son is named
after the father's father, we assume that James' father was John
because James'
oldest son was named John. However, this is only an assumption
at this point, so
John will not be listed as James' father until more supporting evidence
is found.
Photos:
This is the house in Cools where James
raised his family and was more than likely
born and raised there himself. The photo was taken in 1996. At
that time it was
owned by John Sugrue, a grandson of James'. The house was unoccupied
and the
attached barn and land were being used to raise sheep. John
sold the house and
land immediately surrounding it. He still owns some acres for his
sheep.
