Notes:
Maurice (Jack) was one of 5 children born to Raymond and Margaret Mulhern.
Two siblings, both girls, died
in infancy. Jack had several names because his mother
could not make up her mind. John
Phillip, Phillip John, Joseph Maurice and Maurice
John. There are different
names on his hospital birth certificate, official birth certificate,
baptismal certificate and social
security records. While explaining his mother's inability
to decide on a name, he was quoted
as saying, "And then she got me home and called
me Jack!"
Jack graduated in 1944 from
Fenwick High School in Chicago, Illinois. He then
attended St. Mary's College in
Winona, Minnesota, where he was studying for the
priesthood. A teacher of
his at the college, Gene Kennedy, and Gene's girlfriend, Marie
Hendrickx, arranged a blind date
for Jack and Marie's sister, Ann. The two couples
ended up celebrating a double
wedding in July of 1947.
Jack and Ann lived in Minneapolis
where Jack worked for the US Post Office and
attended night school for accounting.
He then went to work for Kraft Foods as an auditor.
Jack and Ann's first child, Raymond,
was born in Minneapolis. Toward the end of 1949,
Jack was able to arrange a job
transfer to the Kraft offices in Chicago.
Jack, Ann and Raymond moved
into a basement apartment in Jack's parent's house. They
lived there until January of 1952, when they purchased
a home at 1216 North Parkside
Avenue, Chicago. When Jack's
father, Raymond, died in 1955, Jack, Ann and Jack's
mother, Margaret, jointly purchased
a home at 5201 West Berteau Avenue, Chicago.
Jack's mother lived in an upstairs
inlaws apartment until her death in 1971.
Jack was diagnosed in his 20's
with Crohn's disease. He had portions of his intestines
removed at the University of
Chicago Hospital. He was a very heavy smoker and developed
emphysema and congestive heart
failure due to his smoking. He was taking medication for
high blood pressure beginning
in his mid-40's. He became an alcoholic in his mid-50's. By
his early 60's he was on disability
and had experienced several mild strokes and a mild heart
attack. He died in his
sleep of a massive heart attack at age 63.
