Descendants of Henry Briggs

Descendants of Henry Briggs

Henry and Mary Jane have always been two of my favorite ancestors. This section of the family is the largest documented one in the family tree. A key artifact in this family and in my early work in researching our family tree is what I referred to as the "Peloubet Letter". This letter was written to Armenia Bell Murgittroyd Dobbs from W. Scott Peloubet in response to a request by one of Armenia's daughters for information about the family history. I received a typed transcript of the letter and have never seen the original. In the transcript words that could not be read due to the handwritten were simply left out resulting in some gaps.

Over the years I have read and re-read this letter numerous times. While there are still many parts of the letter I do not understand most of the letter has been proven to be correct. The major missing part of the letter is that Mr. Peloubet could not make the exact connection how the Murgittroyd family was connected to the Briggs. This lack of knowledge is understandable since both Nicholas Murgittroyd and his wife Mary F. Briggs, the first daughter of Henry W. Briggs and Mary Jane Minnerley, died some thirty years before Mr. Peloubet was born.

Make sure to carefully read the section of the letter which seems to state that another member of our family once tried to claim all of the land in Haverstraw, NY as part of an American Indian claim from Mary Jane.
