FOR SHERIFF, R. R. PAYNE  The Republican Candidate for that Office  His  Administration Has Been a Conspicuous Success  Noted Captures of the Past Two  Years Long Chases After Muskegon County Criminals – Mr. Payne’s Career – Rose by  His Own Efforts – Has Lived Here Whole Life  No more deserved compliment to a most  efficient officer can be paid than the re-election by the people of Muskegon County of  Rolla R. PAYNE, their present sheriff.  The esteem in which he is held by those who  have been closely identified with the work of preserving the public peace is evidenced by  the expressed opinion of a well known Democratic party in this county could do would  be to endorse the Republican candidate for sheriff and move to make it unanimous.  Has Been an Efficient Officer  Mr. PAYNE is just completing his first term as sheriff  after an exceptionally successful administration.  He was inducted into the work of thief  catching early in his career as sheriff.  When he came into office January 1, 1900, the  city was being terrorized by a gang of porch climbers, house-breakers and petty thieves.   The new sheriff at once began a campaign against these people.  About January 18 the  first arrest was made and inside of two or three days a gang of seven had been rounded  up.  Of these, six are now doing time.  The other man was acquitted by a jury though  his pal pleaded guilty, turned states evidence and was given 4 ½ years on his own confession.  The landing of a man and a woman in jail after they had burglarized  James. E. BALKEMA’S store  at North Muskegon was Mr. PAYNE’S individual effort.  He  went to work on this case after two other officers had given it up, and the evidence he  collected landed both offenders in state’s prison, where they are now serving sentences  for the crime.  It can be safely said that of all the warrants that have been placed in the  hands of Sheriff PAYNE for service in the past two years, those that have not been  served on the parties charged in the warrants can be counted on the fingers of one  hand.  In two or three cases the offense charged was so small that it would not pay to  go into a distant state after them, and spend the officer’s time and people’s money.  Where it has been necessary and advisable to go long distances after men, Sheriff  PAYNE has not hesitated.  Peter LECLAIR, now doing time for statutory larceny was  captured at Newport, Tennessee after a chase of 1,800 miles.  A man named SMITH was  captured in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and is now serving sentence.  A man for whom  a warrant had been issued 18 months before Sheriff Payne came into office was recently  apprehended by the present sheriff and is now paying the penalty for his crime.  The  annals of Mr. PAYNE’S regime contain many incidents of corresponding interest.  Has  Lived Here Many Years  Mr. Payne was born August 10, 1857 in St. Lawrence County,  New York.  In 1860 his family moved to this city and Muskegon or its immediate vicinity  has ever since been his home.  His father, Daniel N. PAYNE, continued a resident of this  city until his death four years ago.  Young Rolla PAYNE worked here summers and in  the winter attended school near Coopersville, where he earned his board, clothes and  schooling working on a farm.  For 15 years he was a shingle sawyer and filer in this city  working for P.B. PECK and others.  He finally became foreman of the Michigan Shingle  & Lumber Co. the principal partners in which were H.P. NEWTON and C.C.  BILLINGHURST.  In the employ of W.J. PERKINS & Company, builders of mill  machinery at Grand Rapids,  Mr. PAYNE learned his trade as a machinist.  Later he was  with the Muskegon Chemical Engine Company six years and three years foreman of its  erecting department.  For five years he was in the employ of the Shaw Electric Crane  Company.  From the shops of the Pere Marquette Railroad he was called to the office of  sheriff.  He had been in the Pere Marquette shops 2 ½ years.  Re-nominated Without  Opposition  It was in the fall of 1900 Mr. PAYNE was nominated for sheriff on the  Republican county ticket after a spirited contest for the nomination.  In November he  was elected by a majority which lacked but a few votes of an even thousand.  This year  he was re-nominated without opposition and he will be re-elected in almost the same  way.  Mr. PAYNE is an excellent example of the American who has risen by his own  efforts and experienced all the hard knocks that that kind of a life means. He has even  won the respect of those employed about him and it was his companions of the bench  and the machine room who rallied to his support two years ago and stood by him so  loyally throughout the contest for the Republican nomination for sheriff.  A man of the  people, he has retained the people’s respect in this important office and needs no  stronger commendation than that the everyday people of this county stand ready to give  him whenever his name is mentioned as a candidate for office and as a man.

PEARSON, Alfred

Article

Muskegon Chronicle, 21 August 1952, page 1

Headlines:   Victims of Accidents (Pictures of two boys) Lawrence Harken -Alfred  Pearson  Two Boys, 13, Die in County Mishaps  Two 13-year-old boys lost their  lives in outdoor accidents in Muskegon County yesterday afternoon.  Lawrence Edward  Harken, son of Mr. And Mrs. William Harken, of 1831 Franklim street, Muskegon  Township, was killed when a rifle he had been carrying accidently discharged as he  stumbled and fell.  Alfred Pearson, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Pearson of 5887 White  road, Wolf Lake, drowned when he toppled from a boat from which he had been fishing  in the North Bay at Wolf Lake.  The Harken tragedy involved a .22 caliber rifle which  had been dismantled three months ago and since had been in imperfect working condition. Lawrence ans his cousin, Ronald Maschke, 12 years old, of Chicago, had been  walking along Muskegon Lake at the rear of the Stewart Hartshorn Company plant. At  about 3:30 p.m. Lawrence stumbled and fell and the rifle accidentally went off, the bullet  striking him in the face.  RONALD had taken a bow and arrow to the lake while  Lawrence carried the rifle. Ronald was slightly behind his cousin and frequently  Lawrence would look over his right shoulder to make certain Ronald was all right. As he  did that the last time, Lawrence stumbled. When he failed to rise, Ronald rushed over and  saw blood streaming from his cousin’s face. He tried to stem the flow with a  handkerchief, but it was impossible to stop it.  When his efforts to stop the blood failed,  Ronald ran to the factory. There he met Earl D. Carpenter, a foreman, and Ray Herder, a  toolmaker. Police and an ambulance were summoned and the two men went with Ronald  to the place were Lawrence fell.  By the time Lt. Arthur Zillah of the Muskegon police  department arrived, Lawrence was dead.  THE TRIGGER mechanism of the rifle had  been removed and the pin which holds the barrel to the stock was lost. It was fired by  holding the barrel in the hands, pulling back on the firing pin and then releasing it to  strike the bullet. Lawrence decided to take the stock along yesterday, pointing out the  rifle did not shoot accurately without it.  The two boys were in a marshy, isolated spot,  seldom visited by fishermen who frequent that area. To reach the boy, it was necessary   for volunteers to wear boots borrowed from the Muskegon Fire Department.  LAWRENCE was born in Muskegon Dec. 1, 1938. He would have entered 9th grade at  Muskegon Central Junior High School next month. He was a member of Olivet  Evangelical Sunday School.  Surviving are his parents; a brother, Richard; A sister,  Barbara; his grandfather, Edward Harken of Muskegon. He was a nephew of Charles  Harken, veteran member of the sheriff’s department.  FALLING from a rowboat from  which he was fishing, Alfred Paerson, Jr., drowned in North Bay of Wolf Lake at about  2:15 p.m. The body was recovered about 3:40 p.m. through dragging operations.  Yesterday’s was the second drowning tragedy at Wolf Lake in less then two weeks. On  Aug. 12 Francis Hill, 17 years old of Rapid City, drowned near the Wolf Lake  Amusement Park while swimming.  Alfred, who would have been 13 years old next  Tuesday, was fishing from the bow of a boat rowed by William Stoops, 13 years old, of  1123 Bolen road. About 75 feet off shore Alfred suddenly fell forward into the water.  “I  was dropping the anchor when he fell” the Stoops boy said. “I grabbed for him, but  missed, I stuck out an oar which he grabbed but he could not hold on. I think he had a  cramp.” Neither boy could swim.  JOHN CARPENTER, 13, of 576 Amity avenue,  Muskegon, who was alone in a boat nearby, rowed to shore and phoned the Egleston Fire  Department. Tony and Rosemarie Paulik, of Wolf Lake, took the Carpenter boat, and,  fully dressed, dove several times in an effort to rescue the Pearson boy. Tony is 15, his  sister, 13.  John Flickema, Egleston fire chief, also dove several; times.  Dragging  operations were carried on by Egelston and Norton firemen, sheriff’s department men,  Muskegon and North Muskegon police and volunteers. The Coast Guard loaned drags.  The body was located at about the spot where the accident occurred. Water is about 10  feet deep, but the bottom is weedy and muck. THE DROWNED boy’s father was called  from hos work at the Muskegon Aluminum Foundry and took part in the search. He had  returned to work only 2 days ago after a long illness. The distraught mother was cared for  at the nearby home of Mr. And Mrs. Kenneth Erickson.  The tragedy attracted many  people including youngsters at the county 4-H exposition a half mile away.  The Pearsons  had moved from Muskegon to Wolf Lake only a month ago. Alfred junior was the oldest  of four children.  Alfred was born in Muskegon, Aug. 26, 1939, and had been a resident  of Western Michigan all his life. He had completed 7th grade at the Dangl School and was  a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. A former Boy Scout, he had rejoined that  organization just a week ago.  Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Robert and  Edwin, and a sister, Karen, all at home; his grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Alvin Pearson  and Carl West, all of Muskegon, and a great-grandfather, August Erkman of Escanaba.

PILLINGER, HARRY J. MR.

Obituary

White Lake Beacon, Whitehall, Michigan, 9 May 2004, Page 5-B

MR. HARRY J. PILLINGER, Whitehall.  Harry Jennison Pillinger, 90, passed away peacefully in his chair at Pinewood Retirement Home in Whitehall last Friday, April 30.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella, last year.   Harry was born in Chicago, IL, August 8, 1913, and spent his youth tournament speed skating in winter in Chicago, and swimming and sailing in summer at his family's Sylvan Beach cottage in Whitehall.  The Great Depression saw his family leave Chicago for Grand Rapids, MI, yet they still spent their summers on White Lake.  He did attend Whitehall High School for one year, but graduated from Central High School in Grand Rapids in 1931.  His love of sailing on White Lake brought him numerous silver trophies and a life-long attachment to the White Lake Yacht Club.  Sailing also became his livelihood; from putting himself through the University of Michigan by taking tourists sailing for hire, to becoming a PT Boat Captain in WWII, then culminating in the construction of the 3 "Skipper's Landing" Marinas on White Lake, which he owned and operated with his wife, Stella, for over 30 years.  He employed many young men and women during those years, all of whom he spoke highly.  Mr. Pillinger was a football fanatic as well, playing in high school, then for U of M, where he graduated in 1936 with a degree in Physical Education.  He was a member in the Chi Psi Fraternity and still attended reunions as late as 4 years ago.  He followed Whitehall High School athletics closely and served on the Board of Education when the existing high school was being built.  His memberships included the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Masonic Lodge and Shriners.  He was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, past President of Whitehall/Montague Lion's Club, and past Commodore of the White Lake Yacht Club.  Additionally, he served on the Whitehall City Council from 1973 to 1977.  Harry was also the consummate fisherman; from fly fishing Michigan's tiny trout streams to lobbying for the planting of salmon in the Great Lakes, to eventually hosting the first West Michigan Charter fleet at his docks.  Later, he was a major impetus in the building of the Whitehall Municipal Marina.   His love of this area extended to the woods, too.  He was a hunter, a mushroom enthusiast, and he thoroughly enjoyed working in his Christmas tree farms, right alongside the young men he hired.  Harry Pillinger's long and full life touched the White Lake community in so many ways that we will see the results of his efforts for decades to come.  The "Skipper" will be missed by many, but could never be forgotten.   He is survived by his son, Mike; his daughter, Candy; his daughters in law, Joanne and Christine; his granddaughters, Tori, Amanda and SarahCaitlin; and his 2 great granddaughters, Stella and Zoe.   A memorial service was held at Clock Funeral Home in Whitehall Saturday, May 8, at 3 p.m., with visitation just prior to the service.    Camaraderie and refreshments  followed the service at the Pillinger family home on Michillinda Road.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Whitehall/Montague Lion's Club at P.O. Box 402, Whitehall, MI 49461.

Article

Muskegon Chronicle, Muskegon, MI Saturday, December 16, 1989, page 1

(Picture of accident)   Two die, one hurt in crash   A two-car crash on M-46 near Maple Island Road Friday night left  two people dead and a third critically injured.  State police said a man and a woman traveling eastbound were killed  when their car slid into the path of a westbound compact car and was struck broadside at approximately 8:30 p.m.  THE TWO were pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Lambertus Mulder, deputy medical examiner.  Their names  were withheld pending notification of realtives.  Trevor Wagenmaker, 20 of 332 River Rd., Coopersville, driver of the  westbound vehicle was admitted at Hackley Hospital with multiple injuries and trauma.  He was listed in critical  condition Friday night in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.  A 2-year old girl riding in the rear seat of the first  vehicle escaped serious injury and was treated for minor injuries at Muskegon General Hospital.  She is unrelated  to the fatally injured couple, a hospital officials said.  STATE POLICE Trooper David Barber, an accident  reconstruction specialist, said that, based on accounts of witnesses, the driver of the eastbound car had attempted  to get ahead of another eastbound vehicle just before the five lanes of M-46 merge into two lanes just east of Maple  Island Road.  The driver apparently lost control on the slushy road surface and the car went into a sideways skid,  crossing the centerline.  The midsized car was heavily damaged by the impact, requiring the use of a Hurst Tool by  Egelston Township rescue personnel to extricate the victims.

Sherman, a neighbor.  Pumfery worked at Huron Cement Company in Muskegon during the week, and flew home to his family in Covert on weekends.  The crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. last Wednesday in a wooded area about 1,500 feet north of White Lake Drive, between Russell and Blue Lake roads, said Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department Captain Orville Budd.  However, searchers did not find the downed aircraft until 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.  The airplane was not reported missing until 3 a.m. when a signal from the airplane’s “black box” was relayed from a Soviet satellite to Scott Air Force Base near St. Louis, Missouri.  Captain Budd said residents in the area heard the sound of the crash, but did not attribute it to an airplane crash until they heard an aircraft was missing.  The signal indicated the downed aircraft was located west of Russell Road about 12 miles north of Muskegon, said Captian Budd.  A tentative search was made until daylight Thursday, then an intensive ground and air search located the crash site.  The Cessna, which crashed nose first, was spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter from Traverse City.  Also, joining the search were aircraft from the Civil Air  Please turn to Page 6.

Plane crash. Continued from Page 1.  Patrol, the WZZM-TV helicopter, the Muskegon County Sheriff’s deputies and mounted posse, a Civil Defense airplane and private individuals.  Personnel from the Blue Lake Township Fire Department assisted in extrication of the bodies from the airplane.  Both Pufery and Sherman suffered severe injuries and were already dead when found, said Captain Budd.  The bodies were taken to Muskegon General Hospital where Muskegon County medical Examiner Dr. Henry DeLeeuw performed autopsies.  Captain Budd said it was reported the pilot and his neighbor boy went to the Northside Airport on River Road, where the airplane was kept, to wash the Cessna.  Apparently, he said, they decided to fly.  The cause of the crash is being investigated by the National Safety Board.

Auto Accident

Muskegon Chronicle, Muskegon, Michigan 1928-1929

Mr. and Mrs Richard Pyle Seriously Injured in Auto Crash Holland, May 25 - seven persons four of them resident of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights were injured in an accident a half mile north of here yesterday afternoon when two cars collided head on. The seriosly injured are: Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pyle, 1727 Fifth St., Muskegon both suffering from fractured skulls. The less seriously injured are: Mr. and Mrs. Adam Pyle, Sr., 834 Sanford st., Muskegon Heights.  Mrs. and Mrs. Thomas C. Lamb of Texas and John Herman of California. Recovery of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pyle was regarded as doubtful this noon. In addition to a fractured skull, Mrs. Pyle has fractured ribs, internal chest injuries, and numberous lacerations. Mr. Pyle who was driving the car suffered in addition to the fractured skull, sever cuts and bruises.  Arrival of the seven patients at the hospital here taxed the accomodations to capacity and a call was sent to Muskegon for nurses. Three were sent. The Pyles were returning to Muskegon from Anderson, Indiana. A short distance north of this city, Richard Pyle drove past a machine going in the same direction but in turning back on to his right side of the road a front wheel ran off the pavement. In turning back onto the pavement, the car began swerving and crashed with an oncoming car, driven by John Herman which also contained Mr. and Mrs. Lamb.  The Herman car turned over in the ditch and the impact of the two machines, swung the Pyle car about, although it remained upright on the pavement facing south.  Adam Pyle, Sr. suffered a broken clavicle and broken left leg. Mrs. Pyle has a broken arm and leg.  Mr. Lamb was cut about the body and his wife's jaw was broken in two places.  Mr. Herman has a broken leg.  A few minutes after the accident, Sheriff Cornelius Stekett of Grand Haven came by and he took the injured back to the local hospital. The accident occurred shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The driver of the car which Mr. Pyle had passed failed to stop and so far the identity of the driver or owner has not been revealed.  Nurses who were sent from Muskegon through the local hospitals were Marjorie Harvey, Marie Reed and Miss Rebbins.  I am not related to this person but I got the second part of an article written about her on a copy of one of my families obits.  The article can be found in the People's Scrapbook #2 located at Hackley Library in Muskegon, MI. The date on my copy has been cut off but the dates on the other article on this paper are from 1928-1929.
