Will of Ardelia B. (Coffin) Farr, dated 31 Dec 1909

I Ardelia B. Farr, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament.

FIRST, I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid.

SECOND, I give as follows:

  1. To the Home for the Friendless of the City of Springfield, Illinois, the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars, to be added to its permanent endowment fund.
  2. To the King's Daughters Home for Aged Women, also known as the Old Ladies' Home and situated on Black Avenue in the city of Springfield, Illinois, the sum of fifteen hundred dollars to be added to its permanent endowment fund.
  3. To the Young Men's Christian Association of Springfield, Illinois, the sum of five hundred dollars.
  4. To the organization known as the Associated Charities of the city of Springfield, Illinois, the sum of five hundred dollars.
  5. To the Board of Managers of Oak Ridge Cemetery of Springfield, Illinois, the sum of three hundred dollars to be added to the Lot Owners Perpetual Care and Improvement Fund of said Cemetery, the income to be used in the care and maintenance of the lot in said cemetery where my late beloved husband, Algernon Farr, is buried and in which I direct that I also be buried.
  6. To Beadle Brown, my grandnephew, the sum of five thousand dollars.
  7. To Jane Coffin, widow of my brother Wellington Coffin, the sum of five hundred dollars.

THIRD, I give of my chattel property as follows:

  1. To my niece Mary R. Mead, my diamond pin and my long gold chain and cross.
  2. To Ottilie M. Messick, daughter of my niece, Mary R. Mead, my ruby set, consisting of pin and earrings.
  3. To Margaret M. Anderson, a daughter of my niece, Mary R. Mead, one of my diamond earrings.
  4. To Blanch Bell, daughter of my niece Elizabeth Hollon, one of my diamond earrings.
  5. To Carrie Commins and to her daughter, Marguerite my diamond rings, one to each.
  6. To Ardelia Tudor, my watch and chain.
  7. To my nieces, Elizabeth Hollon and Mary R. Mead, share and share alike, all the rest of my goods, personal belongings, silver and silverware, table furnishings, books, pictures, bric-a-brac, furnature and household effects of every kind.

FOURTH: I direct my executors to convert all the rest and residue of my personal estate into money, the same to be divided into eight equal parts, which I give as follows:

To my niece, Mary R. Mead, two parts.
To my nephew, Henry W. Rowley, one part.
To my niece, Elizabeth Hollon, two parts.
To my nephew, John Roberts, one part.
To my niece, Fanny Roberts, one part.
To my niece, Mary Hayden, one part.

FIFTH: I give and devise all the real estate which I may own at my death to my nephews and nieces namd in the fourth item of this will to be held by them in the same proportions in which they are in that item given interests in the rest and residue of my personal estate.

SIXTH: Any bequest of personal property or devise of real estate which may lapse shall go to the child or children of the deceased lgatee or devisee, but if no child shall survive, then such legacy or devise shall go to and be divided, share and share alike, among the remaining legatees and devisees specifically named in the fourth item herein.

SEVENTH: I do not make any provisions in this will for my husband's niece, Cleora L. Farr, because of the advances heretofore made for her benefit and education.

EIGHTH: I appoint my niece, Mary R. Mead, and B.R. Heironymus to be executors of this will.

WITNESS my hand and seal this 31 day of December 1909.






I, Ardelia B. Farr, do make and declare this to be a codicil to my last will and testament.

Whereas my niece, Mary R. Mead being one of the legatees died on the 4th day of April 1910, I hereby revoke the specific devise to her of my diamond pin and long gold chain and cross, and hereby give and bequeath to my niece Elizabeth Hollon the said diamond pin and long gold chain and cross; and in case of her death then to her children.

Witness my hand and seal this 22nd day of April, 1911.
