Probate of the Estate of Abraham Coffin, died 13 January 1870, Deerfield, Oneida, New York

Release by Nelson and Jacob Coffin, sons of Abraham Coffin, 10 Aug 1870

Know all men by these presents that we, Nelson Coffin and Jacob Coffin, of the town of Depeyster, County of St. Lawrence and state of New York, for value received do hereby release all claims or interest of whatsoever nature or kind in the estate of Abram Coffin late of the town of Deerfield Oneida County State of New York deceased, and agree that Tompkins Coffin of the town of Leray, County of Blue Earth, and State of Minnesota shall and may proceed to settle said estate according to law, and the said Tompkins Coffin shall be entitled to receive have and enjoy any interest we may have in the said estate.

Given under our hands and seals at Depeyster this 10th day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and seventy.

Petition of Tompkins Coffin, son of Abraham Coffin, 18 Aug 1870

To Joseph S. Avery, Esq., Surrogate of the County of Oneida.

The petition of Tompkins Coffin of the town of Leray, Minnesota, represents: That the petitioner is the son of Abraham Coffin late of the town of Deerfield in said county of Oneida, deceased; that the said Abraham Coffin died at the town of Deerfield in the said County of Oneida, on or about the 13th day of January last past, intestate, leaving no will and testament, to the knowledge and belief of your petitioner; and at, and immediately preceding his death, he was an inhabitant and resident of the said county of Oneida; and that all and singular the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased do not, according to the best knowledge of your petitioner, exceed the sum of three thousand dollars; that the deceased left no real estate, and left him surviving a widow Ann Coffin and five sons and 2 daughters.

That in the opinion of your petitioner, it is necessary that administration of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased should be granted to some proper person. And your petitioner therefore prays that such proceedings may be had, that the administration of such goods, chattels, and credits may be granted to your petitioner.

I Ann Coffin, the widow of Abraham Coffin late of Deerfield, Oneida Co. N.Y. deceased, do hereby consent and request the Surrogate of Oneida County to issue letters of administration on the personal estate of said deceased to my son Tompkins Coffin, and waive all rights to such appointment.

Petition of Ann Coffin, widow of Abraham Coffin, 23 Aug 1870

COUNTY OF ONEIDA, SURROGATE'S COURT.

In the Matter of the Administration of the Goods, Chattels and Credits of Abraham Coffin, deceased.

To Joseph S. Avery, Surrogate of the County of Oneida:

The petition of Ann Coffin of the town of Deerfield in the said county respectfully showeth that she is the widow of Abraham Coffin late of the town of Deerfield, deceased.

That the said Abraham Coffin died a natural death and died intestate as your petitioner verily believes. That your petitioner has made diligent search and inquiry for a will of the said deceased and has not found any or obtained any information that he left or ever made any.

That your petitioner has to the best of her ability estimated and ascertained the value of the personal property of which the said deceased died possessed and that the same does not exceed in value the sum of about fifteen hundred dollars.

That the said intestate left kindred entitled to his estate whose names and places of residence are as follows:

Nelson Coffin and Jacob Coffin residing in Depeyster, St. Lawrence Co.
Edward and Elisha Coffin residing in Deerfield, Oneida County.
Thompkins Coffin in ___________ Minnesota.
Maria Thornton, Depeyster, St. Lawrence County.
Bedora Ann Whitney in McComb, St. Lawrence County.
all children of the intestate.

Your petitioner further showeth that the said intestate was at or immediately previous to his death an inhabitant of the county of Oneida.

That your petitioner is of full age and that she is informed and believes that the Surrogate of the County of Oneida has sole and exclusive power to grant letters of Administration of the goods, chattels and credits of the said intestate.

She prays that such letters may be granted to her in pursuance of the statute in such case made and provided. And she prays that William D. Schermerhorn, residing in the town of Deerfield in said county, farmer, be jointed with her in the administration and she hereby consents to have the said William D. Schermerhorn so joined in such administration.

Petition of W. D. Schermerhorn, Administrator of Estate, 31 Oct 1871

Joseph S. Avery, Esq., Surrogate of the County of Oneida:

The petition of W. D. Schermerhorn, sole surviving administrator of Abraham Coffin, deceased, late of the town of Deerfield in the county aforesaid respectfully represents;

That your petitioner desires to have a final settlement of his accounts as such Administrator, that 12 months have elapsed since Letters of Administration were granted;

That the following are the heirs at law and next of kin of the said deceased, viz:

son Nelson Coffin of Depeyster, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y.
son Jacob Coffin of Depeyster, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y.
son Edward Coffin of Deerfield, Oneida Co.
son Elisha Coffin of Deerfield, Oneida Co.
son Daniel Tompkins Coffin, Tivoli, Blue Earth Co, Minnesota
daughter Maria Thornton of St. Lawrence Co.
daughter Deborah Whitney of St. Lawrence Co.
all of full age.

Your petitioner therefore prays that a citation may issue to all persons interested in the estate of the said deceased, requiring them to attend a final settlement of his accounts at the Surrogate's office in Clinton on the 14 day of December, 1871, at 10 o'clock A. M.
