They were married in the evening and Frank had to get up at four the next morning to work at a dairy. Later he bought a restaurant, which was a swindle, because the cans of food on the shelves were empty.
They moved to Jewell County, Kansas, in 1879, and lived in an old sod house for a while. When Otto was only three, they drove a blind team back to Iowa to see the folks, because Mamie was so homesick.
Later, one of their horses died and they helped the other horse pull the wagon, while they gathered in their wheat. Their farm was mortgaged and they sold enough hogs to pay off the mortgage. The money was placed in a bank, which did not open the next day.
Once, Mamie was asked if she remembered the depression of 1893. No, she said, because every year was a depression in those days. When they lived in the big white house near Burr Oak, one could not visualize the hardships of their early days.
Mamie was very beautiful as a young woman, and always loved good clothes, and wore them well. Frank was a medium-sized man, neat and slim and very erect, with a shock of white hair, as he got older. Their married life wasnt always too smooth. They separated several times, and then went back together. Mamie said she couldnt live with him, and couldnt live without him.
Mamie died 21 November 1937, in Burr Oak, Jewell County, Kansas. Frank died 5 January 1942, in Ford, Ford County, Kansas, at the home of his daughter Maud, with whom he had been making his home, after his wife died. He was buried in Burr Oak, beside Mamie.
