The Move to TennesseeJohn Canaday, Jr. moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee, at the same time as his parents in June of 1797. He was a member of Lost Creek Monthly Meeting until his marriage and apparently made his peace with the Quakers after his marriage contrary to discipline. Juliatha was received as a member on December 28, 1805. She is listed as Latha in the records at Lost Creek. Their children born though 1815 are listed at Lost Creek Monthly Meeting. The Move to IndianaOn April 26, 1817 the family received certificates to go to New Garden Monthly Meeting in Wayne County, Indiana, where John's parents had gone a year earlier. They settled near the town of Economy. The family then belonged to the Springfield Monthly Meeting from the time it was established in 1820 until November 1, 1828 when they moved to Vermillion County, Illinois, and joined the Vermillion Meeting. They remained in Vermillion Grove, Illinois until their deaths.More on the Children of John Canaday, Jr. and Juliatha Cox CanadayHarmon and Charity Mills CanadayHarman and Charity Mills Canaday married 1/11/1827 in Wayne County, Indiana. They are found in Melrose Township, Clark County, Illinois in 1850: #1182 Harman Canaday, 50, farmer, born Tenn; Charity, 42, Oh; Moses, 23, gunsmith, born In; Jane, 18, Il; John, 16, Il; Asenath, 14, Il; Matilda, 10, Il; Eliza, 9, Il; Charles, 5, Il; Sarah, 3, Il; Eli Mills, 25, farmer, born Indiana.Henry Milton and Mary Elizabeth Evans CanadayHenry Milton Canaday married Mary E. Evans on 5/9/1828 in Orange County, Indiana. We found the marriage record but could not find them in the 1850 census anywhere.Rebekah Canaday Mills LewisRebecca Canaday married Seth Mills, son of John and Mary Davis Mills, on 3/21/1827 in Wayne County, Indiana. She married second Zimri Mills Lewis on 8/8/1849 in Vermilion County, Illinois. They are found in District 21, Vermilion County, Illinois in 1850: #270 Zimri Lewis, 52, farmer, born SC; Rebecca, 43, Tn; Henry Mills, 20, Il; Lucinda Mills, 12, Il; Melissa Mills, 8, Il; William Cook, 15, farmer, In; Alfred Lewis, 5, Il.Elihu and Elizabeth McCowan CanadayElihu Canaday married Elizabeth McCowan 11/29/1829, Vermilion County, Illinois. We do not find Elihu in the 1850 census but there is an Elizabeth Canaday of the right age to be his widow living a few doors from Harman Canaday in 1850 in Melrose, Clark County, Indiana: #1186 Elizabeth Canaday, 38, no occupation, born Kentucky; Adam, 18, Il; Sarah, 17, Il; Henry, 13, Il; Ann, 12, Il; Jemima, 7, Il; Mema, 5, Il; Rebecca, 3, Il. There is some possibility this could be Mary Elizabeth, widow of Henry Milton Canaday as well. We have no proof either way.Charles and Sarah Swearingen CanadayCharles Canaday was dismissed 7/5/1834 at Vermilion Monthly Meeting in Illinois for his marriage contrary to discipline to Sarah Swearingen so we know they married before that date. There is an Illinois record for Charles Canaday to a Sarah with the surname garbled on 12/3/1837 in Vermilion County so one or the other of the dates may be wrong. We did not find them in the 1850 census.Anna Canaday HowardAnna Canaday married John Howard 3/10/1841 in Vermilion County, Illinois. Her mother was evidently deceased by the time of her marriage. They are found in 1850 in District 26, Keokuk County, Iowa: #79 John Howard, 37, farmer, born Tn; Anna Howard, 35, Tn; Hepsabath, 17, Il; Emeline, 15, Il; Sarah, 13, Il; William R., 8, Il; Richard, 4, Iowa; Jane 3/12, Iowa. Note that only the last three children are Annas.Riley CanadayRiley Canaday married Martha Lewis, daughter of William and Anna Hollingsworth Lewis on 12/11/1839 in Vermilion County, Illinois. Martha died 6/9/1846 in Keokuk County, Iowa. Riley Canaday then married Margaret Ann Woodward, daughter of Samuel and Abigail Shelley Woodward, on 9/9/1847 in Keokuk County, Iowa. There is more on them on Marion Monks Web Site .Richard Canaday is a descendant of Riley & Margaret Woodward Canaday and will be happy to share information. He has information on the Canaday family up on a Family Tree Maker site. |
