History of Jesse Cook

Jesse Cook was received by request of his father, John Cook, at Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County, North Carolina, along with his brothers and sisters, on 11/12/1808. Jesse and Hannah's marriage is recorded at Westfield. The next entry for them is a certificate granted on 9/14/1822 to Springfield Monthly Meeting in Indiana. There is a gap in the Springfield records from 1814 to 1870 so we do not have information on the family there, except for birth records for the children. They at some time transferred to White Lick Monthly Meeting in Hendricks County, Indiana, as records continue there from 1842 on.

Jesse Cook bought land from brother Levi Cook on August 23, 1826 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Per 1878 Atlas of Hendricks County, Indiana, "the first brick dwelling house in the county was built in 1830 for Jesse Cook just south of Belleville...razed about 1905 and replaced by the frame house inhabited by the Woodward family in the nineteen hundreds. John S. Woodward lived on the property known as Woodward Hill, acquired from his father in 1860."

Widower Jesse Cook is found in Liberty Township, Hendricks County in 1850#77Jesse Cook, 57, farmer, born NC; Milton, 21, In; Elizabeth 16, In; John 14, In; Zimri 10 In.

Jesse Cook married second, Mary Hadley, daughter of Simon & Elizabeth Hadley, on 7/1/1852 at White Lick Monthly Meeting in Morgan County, Indiana. The parents of Jesse are listed as John, deceased, and Lydia, so we know John died before this marriage and Lydia after. As far as we know there were no children from this marriage.

More on the Children of Jesse and Hannah Marshall Cook

Elizabeth Cook Woodward

Daughter Elizabeth J. Cook married John Smith Woodward 10/30/1856 in Hendricks County, Indiana, so technically the property mentioned above stayed in the family. There is more about this family in the John Smith Woodward page linked under Elizabeth under the children above.

Lydia Cook Dixon Woodward

Daughter Lydia Cook married Nathan Dixon, son of Joel & Mary Newlin Dixon, on 9/21/1842 at White Lick Monthly Meeting, Hendricks County, Indiana. They had three children: Jesse Dixon, born 8/13/1843, died in the Union Army in East Tennessee 3/1/1864; Albert Dixon, born 8/23/1845, taught a Quaker school in Arkansas set up for negro children, later taught in San Francisco; Mary Jane Dixon, born 11/17/1747, married Elihu Morgan who served in the Union Army. A manuscript written by Lydia's son Riley Woodward furnished the information on these children. Nathan Dixon died 11/9/1847, just before the birth of his daughter.

The 1850 census shows widow Lydia Dixon and children living next door to William Woodward, brother of Benjamin Woodward. In 1851 she married Benjamin Woodward in Hendricks County, Indiana. Her story is continued on Benjamin's page linked with her under the children above.

William and Edith Hadley Cook

Son William H. Cook married Edith Hadley, daughter of Joshua and Mary Hadley, on 3/25/1846 at White Lick Monthly Meeting. They had children: Mary, Hannah, Joshua, Jesse, Malinda, Silas, and Mahlon.

William H. Cook died on 12/1/1865, wife Edith died on 12/3/1865, daughter Mary died on 12/2/1865, daughter Hannah died 2/2/1866, son Jesse died 3/24/1867, and son Silas 2/14/1865. They died of spotted fever and are buried at White Lick Monthly Meeting. Malinda lived long enough to marry but then died at the age of 31. All are buried at White Lick. Son Joshua M, married Maggie, daughter of Herbert Fancher and they had foster children Harvey E, born 9/24/1872 and Emma G, born 5/6/1875. Joshua died 8/10/1897 at White Lick MM.

Milton and Martha Hadley Cook

Son Milton Cook married Martha Hadley, daughter of Joshua Hadley, deceased, and sister of Edith Hadley who married his brother William, on 3/24/1852 at White Lick. Milton's parents are listed as deceased on the marriage certificate though we know Jesse was still alive. Milton and Martha had children: Lydia Ellen (3/7/1853); Susannah Mariah (12/10/1854); Jessie Ann (9/11/1856); Abner (1/4/1859); Rebecca Jane (4/8/1861); Rhoda Edith (2/8/1863); William H. (8/9/1866); and Mary Etta (4/11/1869, d 2/12/1886), all recorded at White Lick Monthly Meeting.

In 1860 Milton is found in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Indiana: 636 Milton Cook, 31, farmer, born In; Martha, 30, born NC; Lydia #, 7, In; Susannah, 5, In; Jesse A, 3, In; Abner, 1, In; and stepmother Mary Hadley Cook, 52, born North Carolina. Next door was uncle Nathan Cook, 52, farmer, born NC and grandmother Lydia Cook, 89, born NC.

John M. and Sarah Woodward Cook

Son John Marshall Cook married Sarah Jane Woodward, daughter of William and Nancy Smith Woodward on 11 Dec 1856 in Hendricks County, Indiana. They are found in the 1860 census in Liberty Township, Hendricks County: #640 John M. Cook, 22, farmer, born In; Sarah J., 22, In; Eveline, 1, In; Zimri D. Cook, 20, farmer, In. Next door was the Elijah and Mary J. Franklin family and their daughter would marry Zimri in 1865. There is some discrepancy over the actual birthdate of John Marshall Cook, but census records support a date of about 1837 and White Lick Monthly meeting gives it as 2/2/1828.

The children of John M. and Sarah Woodward Cook are listed at White Lick Monthly Meeting: Eveline (8/22/1858); Ida (7//2/1861); William P.(12/3/1866); Mary E.(1/19/1869); Anna L.(1/15/1872); Arthur W.(2/15/1874); Nora (5/5/1877); Leone (1/29/1881); and Jesse A. (11/15/1882).

Zimri and Eliza J. Franklin Cook

Son Zimri Cook married Eliza J. Franklin on 28 December 1865 in Hendricks County. She was daughter of Elijah and Mary J. Franklin who lived next door to John M. Cook in 1860. A search for them in the 1870 census was unsuccessful but we found Eliza censused twice in 1880 in Hendricks County: She was a widow, keeping house, with a daughter Cora B., born Missouri, and a son Charley Z, born Indiana. Cora was age 12 so they were in Missouri in about 1868 and Charles was born about 1869/70 so they may have been in transit back to Indiana during the 1870 census period.
