From Pennsylvania to North Carolina

The minutes of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange County, North Carolina, record the receipt of a certificate for Mary Newlin, wife of John and daughter Mary on 2/4/1769, dated 7/6/1768 at Concord Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania. An identical certificate for daughter Hannah was received on the same date. The certificate for John and sons is apparently missing, as is further record of their children in North Carolina.

More on Children of John and Mary Pyle Newlin

James Newlin: Son James Newlin married Deborah Lindley, daughter of Thomas and Ruth Hadley Lindley, on 1/22/1772 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Deborah was born 6/28/1753 in Orange County, North Carolina. James and Deborah Lindley Newlin had children: Mary Newlin, born 10/9/1772 (married John Quackenbush/Quakingbush); Ruth Newlin, born 7/2/1774 (married John Carter 1/17/1798); John Newlin, born 4/6/1776 (married Rebekah Long 4/19/1810); Katharine Newlin, born 5/25/1778; Hannah Newlin, born 10/1/1780 (married Michael Farlow 6/12/1799); Nathaniel Newlin, born 12/10/1791 (married first to Hannah and second to Sarah Atkinson 12/11/1828); Eleanor Newlin, born about 1785, (married Claiborne Guthrie); William Newlin, born about 1786 (married Hannah Lindley); Deborah Newlin, born 1787 (married Jonathan Zachary); Thomas Newlin, born 23 Feb 1789 (married Candice Love); Sarah Newlin, born about 1792 (married Joseph Marshall 4/29/1818). The children shown with approximate birthdates are listed in "Quaker Yeoman" 1973. The Encyclopedia of American Quakers also suggests there was another son Jonathan Newlin and he is also listed in a family book about the Newlins. He was born 12 Feb 1793 in North Carolina and died 5 September 1864 in Orange County, Indiana. He married first to Mary Lindley and second to Patsy White. We have heard from Joan Henshaw, a descendant of Thomas and Candace. She tells us Thomas Newlin is buried in Honey Creek Friends Cemetery in Howard County, Indiana and she was able to determine his birthdate from the stone. The web site we had listed here before is no longer available.

James Newlin was listed as deceased at the marriage of Sarah. He died 12/15/1813 in North Carolina.

Hannah Newlin Holladay: Daughter Hannah Newlin married Robert Holladay, son of Henry & Mary Fayle Holladay, 1/15/1777 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Robert was born 9/29/1748 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They had children (all born Orange County, NC): Abigail, born 10/12/1777; William, born 4/29/1779; Mary, born 12/8/1780; Deborah, born 5/5/1782; John, born 2/10/1784; Jacob, born 1/10/1786.

John Newlin III: Son John Newlin married Sarah Holladay, daughter of Henry and Mary Fayle Holladay and sister of Robert, 1/22/1777 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. They had children: Jacob Newlin, born 10/10/1777 ( married Ruth Vestal 8/10/1801); Thomas Newlin, born 8/13/1779 (married Margaret Symons 7/7/1809); James Newlin, (married Elizabeth Symons 12/21/1804). Elizabeth and Margaret Symons were sisters and daughters of John and Elizabeth Symonds of Randolph County. There were several more children but the family had moved their Quaker affiliation to Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina by 1803, and few records survive from that meeting. The transfer records from Cane Creek do not give the names of children.

There is considerable information on this family on Ancestry.com World Family Tree. The family at some point moved to Crawford County, Illinois and information in Crawford County Histories has been posted. To access these sites in World Family Tree type in "William Newlin" and when the long list of Williams comes in scroll to the bottom of the page and type in "Rachel Hill" as spouse of William. Several pages will come up on William showing him as son of John and Sarah Holladay Newlin. We spot checked census records in Crawford County, Illinois, and the information on the WFT sites appears fairly credible. One record in particular in the 1850 census Crawford Co, Il: Nathaniel Newlin, 55, farmer, born NC; Elizabeth, 49, born NC; John N., 22, Il; Holliday A.(male), 19, Il; Elizabeth, 18, Il; Fidelia, 14, Il; Mary E., 10, Il; Martha M, 7, Il; Nancy E., 3, Il. The naming of a son Holliday indicates that Nathaniel was a son of John and Sarah Holladay Newlin. Son John born 1828 also indicates they came fairly early to Illinois. One of the sites reports that John and Sarah both died in Crawford County, Illinois which also seems credible. We had heard from a Robert Kirby, descendant of William and Rachel Hill Newlin and his information aided in this search.

Eli Newlin: Son Eli Newlin married Sarah Hadley, daughter of Joshua and Ruth Lindley Hadley, 11/24/1779 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County, North Carolina. Sarah Hadley was born 8/17/1762 in Orange County. They had children: Edith Newlin (married Samuel Carter 6/5/1805); Ruth Newlin (married Benjamin Vestal 11/21/1798); John Newlin (married Esther Stubbs 2/17/1818); Mary Newlin (married Joel Dixon 9/12/1811), and Joshua Newlin (married Achsah Vestal 4/3/1802).

Eli died sometime prior to 1800 (he was listed as deceased at marriage of daughter Ruth in 1798) and Sarah Hadley Newlin married Jeremiah Piggott (Pickett), son of Jeremiah and Rachel, at Spring Monthly Meeting in Orange County on 1/15/1800. On 4/7/1800 Sarah Pigot, daughters, Edith and Mary Newlin, and sons Joshua and John Newlin, were granted certificates back to Cane Creek Monthly Meeting.

Eli's daughter, Mary Newlin Dixon, is of further interest to us. Her husband Joel was son of Nathan and Sarah Dixon Winters and was born 11/15/1785 in Chatham County, North Carolina. Nathan Dixon was recipient of a letter in 1815 given on our Journey to Indiana page). Joel and Mary Newlin Dixon followed the families who were part of the journey to Indiana in 1823 when they received certificates to Lick Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County, Indiana. One of the children of Joel and Mary Newlin Dixon was Nathaniel Dixon, born 1/7/1819 in North Carolina. On 9/21/1842 Nathan Dixon married Lydia Cook, daughter of Jesse and Hannah Marshall Cook, at White Lick Monthly Meeting in Hendricks County, Indiana. After Nathan Dixon's death on 11/9/1847 in Hendricks County, Lydia Cook Dixon married next to Benjamin Woodward, son of William and Elizabeth Millikan Woodward.

One of the children of Eli's son John and Esther Stubbs Newlin is also of further interest to us. John and Esther had a son David Newlin born 9/15/1820. He married Asenath Blair, daughter of Abner and Abigail White Blair. They had a daughter Louisa J. Newlin, born 1/27/1856 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Louisa married Miles Woodward son of Jesse and Rhoda Morgan Woodward on 4/1/1875 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Jesse Woodward was a son of William and Elizabeth Millikan Woodward, and brother to Benjamin.

Mary Newlin Hadley: Daughter Mary Newlin married Thomas Hadley, son of Joshua and Ruth Lindley Hadley, and brother of Eli's wife Sarah, on 12/10/1783 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County, North Carolina. Thomas and Mary Newlin Hadley had known children: Joshua; John (married Hannah Hadley 10/12/1809); Eli; James (married Mary Hadley 11/23/1815); Hannah (married John Piggott 12/5/1804).

Nathaniel Newlin: Son Nathaniel Newlin married Catharine Hadley, daughter of Joseph and Mary Hadley (dec), on 6/23/1794 at Spring Monthly Meeting in Orange County. (We do not know the connection, if any, to Joshua and Ruth Lindley Hadley.) Both John and Mary Pyle Newlin are listed as deceased at this marriage.Nathaniel and Catharine Hadley Newlin had children: John, b. 5/18/1795, married Ruth Woody; Joseph, b. 7/21/1797; Mary, b. 5/5/1799, married Enoch Morrisson; Jacob, b. 5/5/1801, married Sarah Woody; Hannah, b. 3/9/1803; Duncan, b. 2/27/1805; Elenor, b. 10/1/1807; James, b. 3/9/1801; Ruth, b. 1/24/1813; Eli, b. 2/24/1815. Nathaniel and family were granted certificates to Honey Creek Monthly Meeting in Indiana on 8/26/1826.
