Records in Chester County

Isaac is further proven as a son of Abraham and Mary Marshall in a deed release 14 Oct 1751 where Abraham Marshall of West Bradford, yeoman, and Mary his wife, to Isaac Marshall of West Bradford, yeoman, one of the sons of Abraham and Mary. There follows a description of Abraham Marshall's acquisition of 2 tracts of land in Bradford in 1718. "Now Abraham Marshall and Mary his wife for 29 pounds granted to their son Isaac Marshall 2 tracts of land in Bradford, one where Isaac now dwells bounded by the west branch of Brandywine Creek, land late of Richard Taylor, land late of John Marshall and land of John Battin containing 163 acres the other tract bounded by Brandywine Creek and land of Joseph Buffington containing 2 acres." The release was signed by Abraham and Mary Marshall and recorded 7 December 1753.

Isaac Marshall is found in the 1790 census in West Bradford, Chester County: Isaac Marshall, 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16, 2 females. Apparently one of his sons is living with him. Next to him is son Joshua: 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 2 females. Nearby are Jacob Marshall, Humphrey Marshall, and Abraham Marshall.

There are several mentions of Isaac Marshall in Bradford Monthly Meeting records: 19th of 7th month 1745 Isaac Marshall to Concord MM to marry Ann Vernon, Jr. (His marriage is reported at Concord MM same date. Ann is reported as Ann Varnon.) On 20th of 6th mo 1754 Isaac Marshall acknowledged his marriage by a Church of England minister, and was apparently reinstated at Bradford. On 16th of 1st month 1778 Isaac Marshall was reported as having a female slave in his service. On 16 and 17th of 4th month 1778 it was reported that Isaac Marshall had discharged the Negroes in his possession.

More on the children of Isaac Marshall

The children are proven in Isaacs will, written 4 December 1785 at West Bradford and proven 1 March 1787: "To son Joshua 5 lbs gold or silver. To son Caleb 65 lbs gold or silver. To son Isaac that part of my land lying within the forks of the Brandywine, containing 25 acres. To son David land on the south side of the Brandywine where I now live, containing about 145 acres and all remainder of estate, also executor." (from abstract of will)

Joshua and Rachel Baily Marshall

According to Futhey and Cope in the "History of Chester County, Pennsylvania" Joshua Marshall was the only child of Isaac and Ann Vernon Marshall. We did not find his birthdate given anywhere. However, there is a mention at Bradford Monthly Meeting: "Joshua Marshall, son of Isaac to Concord MM, removed from us in his minority 14th of 6th month 1765", which tells us Joshua was still under 21 on that date.

Joshua married Rachel Baily, daughter of John and Lydia Wickersham Baily on 18 April 1782 at Old Swede's Church, Wilmington, Delaware. Joshua's uncle Humphry Marshall left part of a plantation and 20 acres of woodland on south side of Brandywine Creek to Joshua. He refers to Joshua as cousin but this is the only Joshua Marshall found in the area in that time period so is likely this Joshua.

Joshua and Rachel Baily Marshall had children: Son Marshall, born before 1790, died before 1800 Chester Co; Abraham Marshall, born 12 January 1785; William Marshall, born bet 1785 and 1790; Ann Marshall, born bet 1785 and 1790; Lydia Marshall, born between 1780 and 1800. This correlates fairly well with the 1790 census.

Joshua Marshall is found in the 1800 census in West Bradford: 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-35, 1 male over 45; 1 female under 10, 1 10-15, 1 over 45. In 1810: 2 male over 45, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female over 45; in 1820 Joshua Marshall 2 male over 45 and 1 female over 45.

Widow Rachel Marshall is shown in the 1830 census in West Bradford next to Humphrey Marshall: 1 female 30-40, 1 female 40-50, 1 female 70-80, so we know that Joshua died before 1830 but we do not have a death date. There are probate records in Chester County through 1825 which do not list him which may indicate his death was between 1825 and 1830.

Joshua and Rachel's son Abraham Marshall married Sarah Broomhall, daughter of John and Hannah Cloud Broomhall, and an interesting record of their family is found in a book "Needlework of Pennsylvania" by Margaret D. Shiffer, 1968. In it there is a photograph of a sampler by Lydia Marshall of Chester County, Pennsylvania made in 1824: It lists her parents as Abraham and Sarah Marshall and her brothers and sisters as Joshua Marshall, Orpha Marshall; Cloud Marshall; John B. Marshall; Rachel Marshall; Bayard Marshall; and Caleb Marshall, and gives all their birthdates (except for the parents). There was an additional son, Abraham, Jr. born after the sampler was made but mentioned in Abraham's will. This is also verified in the 1850 West Bradford census: #24 Abraham Marshall, 64, born Pa; Sarah, 63, born Pa; Rachel, 30, Pa; Bayard, farmer, Pa; Abraham 23, farmer, Pa.

Son Cloud Marshall brings us another Woodward connection: He married Mary Woodward, daughter of Joel and Elizabeth Nutt Woodward, and granddaughter of John and Lydia Martin Woodward (more on that page).

David and Mary Buffington Marshall

David Marshall married Mary Buffington 9 April 1781 at Old Swede's Church, Wilmington, Delaware. Mary, at least, made her peace with the Quakers as on 1 17 1800 Mary, wife of David Marshall requests that David, Mary, and Humphrey Savery be received at Bradford Monthly Meeting.

Futhey and Cope in the "History of Chester County, Pennsylvania" names their children as Joseph, John, David, Mary, and Humphrey.

Isaac and Susan Buffington Marshall

The marriage to Susan Buffington is given by Futhey and Cope in the "History of Chester County, Pennsylvania." but no date is given. Children listed are Job, Mary, Jesse, and Jonathan Marshall.

Caleb and Mary Marshall Marshall

Caleb Marshall married his first cousin once removed, Mary Marshall, daughter of Samuel and Rachel Pierce Marshall, on 20 Jan 1791 in Old Swede's Church at Wilmington, Delaware. On 7th mo 18th day 1800 Mary Marshall, wife of Caleb, was received at Bradford with the notation that she married her father's first cousin. Their children are listed in Futhey and Cope "History of Chester County, Pennsylvania": Pierce, Evans, Samuel, Isaac, Abraham, Sarah, Lydia, Aaron, Rachel, and Mary Marshall.
