The Mills Family in TennesseeHenry and Hannah Woodward Mills were members of Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Tennessee.On January 3, 1812, Henry Mills purchased 73 acres of land from Hannah's uncle Patrick Beard, who was preparing to leave for Wayne County, Indiana. The land was on the waters of Lost Creek adjacent to Joseph Bullard and Nathan Shelly. Nathan was related to Abigail Shelly who married Hannah's brother Samuel Woodward. Henry's sister Hannah Mills was married to Isaac Hammer, Quaker minister, who witnessed Abraham Woodward's will. Henry's brothers Seth and Moses Mills had married Charity and Elizabeth Thornbrough, daughters of Walter H. and Mary Baldwin Thornbrough (Mary was sister of Elizabeth Millikan Woodward's mother Ann Baldwin Millikan). Henry's sisters DeMaris and Charity Mills had married William Locke and John Gwin. The move to IndianaIn 1814, Henry & Hannah Mills, Seth & Charity Mills, Moses & Elizabeth Mills, DeMaris & William Locke, and Charity and John Gwin, and their 60 year old mother, Charity Mendenhall Mills, all left for Wayne County, Indiana. Henry's father Aaron Mills had died in Jefferson County, 12/15/1794. Henry & Hannah Mills were received at Whitewater Monthly Meeting in Wayne County, Indiana, on November 26, 1814. Hannah's uncles Patrick Beard and John Woodward had preceded them to Wayne County.The History of Hendricks County, Indiana contains a biography of son William C. Mills "�born in Wayne County, Indiana, at the present site of Economy. His parents were natives of N Carolina who moved to East Tennessee and thence in 1814 to Indiana. They located near Richmond, and then moved to Economy where they lived two years, but not liking Wayne County, returned to Tennessee. They subsequently moved again to Wayne County, where they lived till 1829 when they went to Hendricks County, Indiana, and settled on eighty of acres of land. In 1885 this land was owned by William�s brother Aaron." This tidbit of information clears up some mystery about where the families were at given times. In 1814 Henry and his Mills relatives purchased land in Wayne County. In November and December in 1823 Henry Mills purchased 160 additional acres of land in Wayne County (likely when the families returned?). Sometime before November 1830 Henry and Hannah moved to Hendricks County, Indiana, where Henry purchased 160 acres of land (supporting the above history). Henry Mills died in Hendricks County 3/16/1833, just two months after the birth of his daughter Hannah Mills. He was in good standing at White Lick Monthly Meeting and is buried in the cemetery there. Henry's mother Charity Mendenhall Mills outlived him by three years; she died in Wayne County, Indiana, 2/19/1836. The 1850 census finds Hannah Woodward Mills living with her son Aaron and his family. They are found in Brown Township, Morgan County, Indiana, and are living just two families away from Hannah's brother Benjamin Woodward in Morgan Township, Morgan County (Hannah on the last page of Brown Township and Benjamin on the first page of Morgan). Jeremiah and Anna were married 8/17/1836 in Morgan County, Indiana.Josiah Mills and wife Martha are found in 1850 in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Indiana (just north of Morgan County). They have children: Sarah Jane, 12; Lucinda, 11; Wm H, 10; Emma, 8; Simon, 5; Eliza, 3; Julia, 1. Jeremian Hadley and wife Anna are found in Morgan Township, Morgan County, next to Anna�s uncle, Benjamin Woodward. They have children Henry, 12, In; Perry, 11, In; Enoch, 9, In; Cyrus, 6, In; Charity, 4, In; Calvin, 2, In; Seth 1/12, In. Mother Hannah lives nearby. William Clarkson and Rebecca Hadley MillsSon William Mills married Rebecca Hadley 12/18/1839 in Hendricks County, Indiana, according to Indiana Marriage Records to 1850. Rebecca was daughter of John B. and Elizabeth Hadley and we do not know the connection (if any) to the above Hadleys.The "History of Hendricks County, Indiana" includes more on William Mills. He received a good education for the early day but the greater part of his time was spent in assisting on the farm. When he married he settled on a tract of land in the woods, on the Lick Fork, where he lived eight years. He then sold the land. In the fall of 1855 he bought the farm of Joseph Moffett where he moved in 1856. In 1885 he owned about 800 acres of land. He made a specialty of stock raising. William and Rebecca had children: Emily (b. 1840 d. 1842); Henry (b 1842 d 1854); John H. (b. 9/14/1843, m. Harriett Williams); Charles H. (b 11/24/1848); Addison H,( b. 1850 d. 1851); Amos H (b 10/4/1852 m Eliza -surname unknown); Mary Ellen (b 10/24/1854 m. Wayne Macy); Oliver H (b 5/1857 m. Emma Alice Carter); Aaron H (b. 7/30/1860). Betsey Jane Mills BrayDaughter Betsey Jane Mills married Henry Bray, son of John and Hannah Shelton Bray, 4 Nov 1841 in Morgan County, Indiana. They had children: William (b 9/20/1842 m (1)Elizabeth Porter (2)Mary Haworth); John Milton (b 9/7/1844 m. Martha Burgess); Hannah M. Bray (b 23 Oct 1846, never married); Aaron Bray (b 8/31/1851 m. Ella Willett); Albert (b 9/22/1857 m Anna Burgess); Perry Asa (b 4/22/1861 m. Elizabeth Perry).Aaron MillsSon Aaron Mills married (1)Katharine Farmer, daughter of Jacob and Penelope Farmer, 23 Oct 1847 in Hendricks County. They had children Mary (b 7/24/1848); Margaret Ann (b 7/4/1850); Hannah Maria (b 1/21/1853 d 1855); Pleasant Mills (b 5/12/1855); Belinda (b 9/1/1857); John F. (b 7/17/1860); Henry J (b and d Mar 1864); Ida Bell (b 1/11/1866). Katherine Farmer Mills died 3/1/1866.Aaron Mills married (2) Hannah Macy, daughter of Alvin and Mary Macy, probably in Hendricks County. They had an infant (b 10/8/1868); and Minnie (b 9/22/1871). Charity Mills Macy and Julia Ann Mills MacyTwo of Henry & Hannah's daughters, Charity and Julia Ann Mills, married Perry Macy and William Macy, sons of William Macy, who was a stepson of Hannah's mother Elizabeth Millikan Woodward Macy. Charity and Perry Macy were married 15 March 1850 in Morgan County and William and Julia Ann were married 13 March 1850 (wonder if this is an error in transcription and they had a double wedding?). By 1860 Perry and Charity had children Albert, age 7 and Charlotte, age 2; William and Julia Ann had children Hannah, age 7, Aaron, age 5, and Alva age 2.Hannah Mills PoeDaughter Hannah married Isaac S. Poe 11 Aug 1855 in Morgan County, Indiana. We did not find them in the 1860 census but in 1870 they were in Hamilton County, Indiana (NE of Hendricks and Morgan). Isaac and Hannah Poe had children: Elizabeth, 13; Henry, 12; Pleasant, 9; Virgie (?)(m), 7 and Charles M (4). |
