Newlin Sources

Considerable information on this family can be found in A Mendenhall-Newlin Alliance compiled 17 June 1989 by Russell Newlin Abel, Church Hill, Maryland. It was published on the occasion of the 101st Mendenhall family reunion and was a compilation of the ancestors and descendants of Jacob Hewes Mendenhall (1813-1892) and Hannah Worrilow Newlin (1819-1873) of Chester County Pennsylvania. It includes information on Richard Woodward as the parent of Jane and Mary Woodward as well as on the Newlins. It appears to be well researched although some of the dates above had not been located when it was published.

In Biographies of Delaware County there is a short piece on the Newlin family. It states Nathaniel Newlin II was a Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of Chester County and that he served in the Provincial Assembly. It contains information on the descendants of Nathaniel & Jane's son Joseph and his wife Phebe Lewis Newlin.

Sandra Ferguson who operates the Old Chester County, Pennsylvania, mailing list has a web site up on her Newlin family and we have used it as a source for the Newlin quilt story under Nicholas Newlin below.

Newlin Children

Joseph and Phebe Lewis Newlin: The Delaware County Biographies Newlin piece states that Phebe was granddaughter of Ralph Lewis, an eminent Welsh settler. She was born 2/26/1722. They eventually removed to Christiana Hundred in Delaware and were members of the Wilmington Meeting. Joseph died 11/28/1768 and Phebe died in 1775. They had children Elizabeth, b. 3/7/1742, (married John Yarnall); Edith, b. 12/10/1745, (married Philip Jones); Ellis, born 9/26/1749, (married (1)Jane Mason and (2) Rachel..), and Nathaniel, born 8/20/1760, (married Ann Harlan d/o Joseph & Edith Pyle Harlan). This Nathaniel was an itinerant trader who was murdered for his goods, leaving behind four children.

Nathaniel and Esther Metcalf Newlin: The children of Nathaniel and Esther Metcalf Newlin are documented in his will, written May 25, 1766 at Concord, and proven 11/14/1766. Executors of the will were wife Esther and son Nathaniel. Provides for wife Esther. To daughter Edith wife of Samuel Schofield, 5 pounds. To daughter Jane wife of Isaac Pyle 4 pounds. To daughter Mary Dickinson 19 pounds. To son Nathaniel part of my plantation in Concord containing 116 acres, also the plantation adj. purchased of my Uncle John Newlin containing 100 acres paying the legacies to my five daughters. To son Cyrus part of plantation in Concord containing 161 acres at 21 years of age, paying to daughter Tabitha 50 pounds. To daughters Abigail and Rebecca 50 pounds each at 21. To son Thomas part of my plantation in Concord containing 124 acres at 21.

Martha Newlin Harvey: The descendants of Isaac and Martha Newlin Harvey are documented on a Harvey Web Site. This family migrated to North Carolina as did many of the Newlin families.

Mary Newlin Morrison: The children of James and Mary Newlin Morrison are documented in his will, written December 3, 1766, and proven January 30, 1767. Executors of the will were son Joseph and wife Mary. James left his plantation to son Joseph subject to wife's life interest and maintenance of daughter Esther and paying to children, Agnes, Mary, James, Elizabeth, Jane, John and Priscilla half the value of said plantation. He left to sons Nathaniel, Robert, James, and John, and daughters Agnes, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, and Priscilla 5 shillings each. He left to son Joseph "the loom he weaves on." James Morrison's occupation is given as weaver. His father-in-law, Nathaniel Newlin, was one of the witnesses to the will. First Families of Chester County, Pennsylvania, Vol 2 tells us that daughter Agnes Morrison married Mordecai Cloud, son of Jeremiah and Ann Cloud, Jr. (as second wife).

Nicholas and Ann Hall Walter Newlin: Sandy Ferguson has her line of the Newlins up on a web site linked under Newlin sources above. It gives ancestry and descendants of Nicholas and Ann Hall Walter Newlin and a very interesting story of the appearance of a Newlin quilt that we have reproduced from that site for the benefit of our visitors.
