Wills

There are two wills of interest to us in connection with Elizabeth Kirk Jacobs Woodward. They are of particular interest because they are among the few Quaker wills mentioning slaves.

Will of Roger Kirk

We have only a partial copy of the abstract of the will of Roger Kirk, father of Elizabeth:
"Roger Kirk, West Nottingham, 6/30/1759 Apr 14, 1761, died 3/28/1761 Direct body to be bur in Friends burying ground in E. Nottingham. Provides for wife Elizabeth inc tract of land in E. Nottingham cont 100 acres purchased of Daniel Brown. Also mulatto girl Phillis, negro girl Jinny, negro man Harry, and negro boy Tobe. To son Timothy five pounds and to his wife Ann five pounds. To son William 10 acres, part of plantation whereon I now dwell, also five pounds and to his wife Mary five pounds. To daughter Elizabeth Woodward 30 pounds and to her husband Thomas five pounds. To daughter Rebecca Cook, 40 pounds and mulatto girl Violet and to her husband John Cook 5 pounds. To grandaughter Rebecca Woodward furniture etc. To grandchildren Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Katherine and Joseph Wollison, children of Joseph and Deborah Wollison, decd 10 pounds each when of age...." Clearly Elizabeth's father was well to do.

Will of Samuel, brother of Elizabeth

Roger Kirk's son Samuel, brother of Elizabeth, also left bequests to the Woodwards and Thomas Woodward served as his executor:
"Samuel Kirk, W. Nottingham, August 22, 1763 - August 18, 1764. To brother Timothy Kirk 5 pounds - to cousin Jos Kirk horse. To cousin Abner Kirk - all the land south of the great road, at my mother's dec and when he is 21. To cousin Samuel Woodward all land north of road at do. To cousin Timothy Kirk all shop tools. To cousin Roger Kirk all my books. To cousin Jos Woolison chest etc. To cousin Jacob Kirk my desk. To cousin Thomas Woodward mare and saddle. To cousin William Cook all wearing apparel. To cousin Rebecca Woodward all my sheep. To cousin Mary Woodward a cow. To cousin Elizabeth Woolison, bed and bedding. To mother Elizabeth Kirk, negro wench June. Brother [in-law] Thomas Woodward Executor. This will tells us that the Kirks were educated and that the various cousins, including the Woodwards were close. (Abstracts from Abstract of Wills and Administrations, Chester, County, Pa, 1758-1777.)

Will of Richard Woodward

Richard Woodward left his son Thomas five shillings in his will, the minimum required by law. This was because Thomas had already received land from his parents (for a price!):
"On 11 & 12 Dec 1740 Richard Woodward of East Bradford, yeoman & Mary his wife, to Thomas Woodward of East Bradford, yeoman, the son of Richard Woodward & Mary his wife... . Whereas John Willis by deed dated 20 Feb 1702/3 granted to Richard Woodward a tract in East Bradford bounded by land of Edward Wantons & other land of Richard Woodward containing 150 acres. Now Richard Woodward for 200 pounds granted to Thomas Woodward all the tract of 150 acres. Signed Richard Woodward & Mary Woodward Delivered in the presence of Richard Parson, John Woodward & Richard Woodward, Jr. Recorded 12 Dec 1748. (Abstracts of Chester County, Pennsylvania Land Records, Vol. 3.)

More on Thomas Woodward

From History of Chester County, Pennsylvania by Fuhey and Cope, we learn that Thomas Woodward lived on Street Road, 1 3/4 miles from Londongrove Meeting House. He was engaged in bookbinding, also in surveying and conveyancing. He held negro slaves, but after hearing John Woolman preach against the sin of human bondage he liberated them.

From Nottingham Quaker records we find "Thomas Woodward, son of Richard and Mary of East Bradford Township, Chester County, Province of Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth Jacob, widow of John and daughter of Roger and Elizabeth Kirk of East Nottingham, Chester Co, Province of Pennsylvania, were married the 26th day 10th month 1745 at Public Meeting of Friends at East Nottingham. The marriage was recorded at New Garden Monthly Meeting.

More of the Children of Thomas and Elizabeth Kirk Jacobs Woodward

Rebecca Woodward Dixon

Daughter Rebecca Woodward married William Dixon, son of Joseph and Sarah Powell Dixon, on 12/25/1766 at Londongrove MM, Chester County, Pa. On 9/29/1768 William Dixson conveyed to Joseph Musgrave a tract of 3 acres in Kennett Township, so that is evidently where they lived. Rebecca and William Dixon had children: Susanna, b. 11/12/1767; Joseph, b. 1/7/1769; Thomas, b. 8/31/1771, d. 9/21/1771; William Dixon, b. 3/22/1773; and Sarah Dixon, b 4/6/1775, d. 4/30/1776; all born Chester County.

Samuel Woodward

Son Samuel Woodward married first to Sarah Jackson, daughter of John and Sarah Jackson, on 5/12/1773. In his will dated 4/20/1791 John Jackson left five shillings each to his three daughters, including Sarah Woodward. Sarah Jackson Woodward died 10/10/1794. Samuel Woodward died 2/24/1814. Both are buried at LondonGrove in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Samuel Woodward was dismissed on 2/5/1774 from New Garden Monthly Meeting. Usually when a reason is not given, it was for nonattendance at meeting. Samuel evidently had temporarily given up his Quaker faith, as he served in the Revolutionary War.

We have quite a bit on the descendants of Samuel and Sarah Jackson Woodward as apparently peace was made with the Quakers and their children are recorded in New Garden Quaker records. They are: Susanna Woodward (b. 8/5/1773 m. Benjamin Swayne); John Woodward (b. 5/22/1775 m. Rebecca Coates); Samuel Woodward (b. 3/18/1777 m. Ann Swain); Sarah Woodward (2/11/1779; William Woodward (b. 1/23/1782 m. (1)Sarah Bolton (2) Orpha Shipley); Thomas Woodward (2/15/1784 m. Mary Bary); Levi Woodward (1/29/1786 m. Phebe Hutton); Rachel Woodward (11/25/1787 m. Levi Wickersham; Rebecca Woodward (4/4/1790). There is also information on Samuel and some of his family on the Mattson Web Site.

Samuel Woodward possibly married second to Hannah Starr, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Fincher Starr sometime after 1798. Hannah was born 1/10/1771 and died 2/3/1853 at London Grove, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Samuel and Hannah Woodward had children: Hannah Woodward; Elizabeth Woodward (b. 9/24/1804 m. Stephen Pusey); Lydia Woodward; Esther Woodward; Lewis Woodward.

Thomas Woodward, Jr.

Thomas married Mary Pusey, daughter of Ellis and Susannah Pusey, on 15 October 1777 at Londongrove MM in Chester County. Gilbert Cope in a letter in 1869 said they had nine children but we have identified only 8: Susanna Woodward (b 10/9/1778 died 8/6/1853); Deborah (b 7/25/1781 d 12/24/1813 m. Eli Swain/Swayne); Elizabeth Woodward (b 1/20/1783 d Mar 16 1858 m. Joseph Hawley); Ellis (b 10/7/1784 m 1st Rebecca Shur and 2nd Rachel Woodward, daughter of James and Sarah Cloud Woodward); Thomas Woodward (b and d 1788); Mary Woodward (b 6/16/1789 m.(1)Jonathan Woodward and (2) James Davis); Joshua Woodward (b 2/9/1792 m (1) Rebecca Nutt, (2) Rebecca Lewis, (3) Ellen Unknown); Ann Woodward (b 4/9/1795 m William Kent). A Pusey web site linked below has an additional child Lydia Woodward, born 12/21/1797, died 11/10/1867 - no further information.

Mary Woodward Smith

Daughter Mary Woodward married Joseph Smith 10/20/1784 at Londongrove Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Pas. They had at least one son, John Smith born 10/29/1785. We have nothing more on this family.
