Return to Edward and Jane Thornbrough Page

CAUTION!! We know that Edward and Jane Thornbrough had a son Edward (II) as documented in Edward (I)'s will. What is lacking is the proof that this Edward is that son! Since we know Edward I's son Walter came to North Carolina it seems likely that brother Edward II did as well. We also reflect a possibility that Edward II's son, Edward III, was the Edward Thornbrough born about 1854 who married Polly Tully. Information about Edward III seems to fit this scenario but that is NOT PROOF! We would appreciate hearing from anyone who can shed light on anything on this page. Email Web Master on About Us Page.

Edward Thornbrough (II) is presumed to be the son of Edward & Jane Thornbrough of Armaugh, Ireland, and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Edward Thornbrough (I) names a son Edward in his will in Pennsylvania. Since Walter Thornbrough, son of Edward I, came to North Carolina it seems reasonable to assume that Edward II did as well. Since Walter stopped briefly in Virginia, it seems reasonable to also assume that Edward II did. Edward II unfortunately did not follow the Quaker religion so it is difficult to locate information on him.

Edward Thornbrough II of Pennsylvania, married Ann Morgan, daughter of Gwyn Morgan. Herbert Standing kindly shared information on Gwyn Morgan's will which names his daughter Ann and his grandson Thomas. (The Ann Morgan we previously quoted as his wife was an Ann who married a Morgan in North Carolina in about 1759 and was definitely an error).

Edward Thornbrough II of North Carolina named wife Ann in his will. This may have been a second wife Ann. Wills often contained rather unusual provisions for second wives, to make sure that the children of the first wife did not throw them out of the house, making them wards of the community.

North Carolina Records

In the 1790 census in Randolph County William Thornberry is next door to Ann Thornberry, indicating Edward II was deceased by the time the census was taken. Rules for the census taking were not yet well defined in 1790. Edward Thornberry (III) is living next to his cousin George Thornberry.

The writing of Edward Thornbrough (II)'s will indicates that the named wife Ann might have been a second wife, as he includes provisions for her care that were typical of that situation in a will (e. g. the direction that sons were to provide household provisions and firewood while she lived, and that she was to have "use of" the house and household furniture). Be aware there might have been some other reason Edward had such concerns, or the clerk may have simply made a wrong assumption and wrote the will with the wrong legal "format."

Almost all of the information about this family comes from the will of Edward Thornborough written 19th day of October 1790, and proven in 1791 in Randolph County North Carolina. The will is interesting as it is one of the cases where the name is spelled several ways in one document (Thornborough, Thornberry, and Thornberg). The will names eight daughters but does not tell us their given names.

More on the children of Edward Thornbrough (II)

Jane Thornbrough Moore

Rik Vigeland believes his ancestor was Jane Thornbrough, and daughter of Edward II, who married John Moore, and had son Edward Moore whose birth is recorded in 1806 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. We have therefore put Jane up as a daughter of Edward and assumed she was one of the eight daughters.

Edward Thornbrough III

We received copies of portions of Isaac Frazier's Bible from Fair Whitley, a descendant. Isaac Frazier was a son of Solomon Frazier of Randolph County, North Carolina, and Fair's family lore is that Mary Thornbrough, wife of Isaac Frazier, was a daughter of Edward and Polly Tully Thornbrough. There is a charming story of Edward returning to Pennsylvania to bring Polly home on horseback as a bride after meeting her while a British prisoner in Pennsylvania. Isaac and Mary were purportedly married in 1815 in Randolph County, North Carolina (marriage not found in Randolph County records). While several Internet sites support this information, no one has provided any definitive sources for information. We are posting the information in brief here, hoping someone can come forward with some real proof. Please email webmaster Nadine Holder (email on the About Us Page) if you can provide any information.

We have quite a bit of Frazier information from Quaker records in North Carolina. Unfortunately the only information on Isaac and Mary (possibly Thornbrough) Frazier is their birth and death dates recorded at Marlborough Monthly Meeting. They were received by request at Marlborough MM sometime after their marriage. There are many Frazier connections to the Woodward and Thornbrough families (see the Frazier list on the "F" index page).
