Ruth Hunt was daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Beals Hunt. Ruth was niece of William Hunt, a famous Quaker Minister. William attended the wedding of Thomas and Ruth.

Martha Ballinger was daughter of Henry & Hannah Ballinger of Guilford County, North Carolina. (for some brief notes on the Ballinger family see the Robert Turner page.

More on the Children of Thomas and Martha Ballinger Thornbrough

Henry Thornbrough Son Henry Thornbrough was apprenticed in 1793 by certificate from New Garden to Centre Monthly Meeting. Unfortunately we do not know the occupation he apprenticed for but we do know that later, in Indiana, he was a wagonmaker and manufacturer of farm implements.

Henry Thornbrough married (1) Elizabeth Stanley, daughter of Shadrack and Agnes Stanley, 6/12/1799 at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County. She died 8/8/1800 and is buried at New Garden (probably died in childbirth).

Henry Thornbrough married (2) Rebekah Hussey, daughter of John and Mary Jessop Hussey, 6/2/1802 at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County. Henry and Rebekah had children John (8/16/1803), and Elizabeth (1/3/1806) documented at New Garden. They requested a certificate to Whitewater Monthly Meeting in Wayne County, Indiana, from New Garden, North Carolina on 11/26/1814. The certificate was not presented until January 1816 and at that time included additional children Eunice, Milton, and Hannah. They were later members of Milford Monthly Meeting in Wayne County.

The Wayne County Indiana History, 1872 names additional children Lewis, Henry and Larkin, and tells us that Henry died in Dalton Township, Wayne County. We have not yet checked the Wayne County Quaker records for information.

An article appeared in June 1957 in the "North Carolinian" written by Willard Heiss, author of the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol VII, Indiana Quaker records. It included a letter from Thomas Thornburg (son of James and Mary Moon Thornburg to his cousin Henry. The article tells us a little more of the movements of Henry and family. "Henry Thornburg and his family removed from North Carolina to Warren County, Ohio, in the Fall of 1814. In March 1820 they removed to Wayne County, Indiana, and in the Spring of 1822 they again removed to Posey Township, Fayette County, Indiana, where he remained the balance of his life."

William and Rachel Wilson Thornbrough

Son William Thornbrough was apprenticed in 1793 according to a certificate from New Garden to Back Creek Monthly Meeting. On 9/26/1795 he received a certificate as a minor to Springfield Monthly Meeting where he was dismissed on 11/5/1796. No reason was given for the dismissal which usually meant nonattendance at meeting. Guilford County marriage records show that he married Rachel Wilson January 22, 1799.

Lynn Bass, a descendant of William & Rachel's son Wilson tells us that their children were Allen (12/2/1807); Hiram (about 1814); Jesse (10/6/1818); M. J. (about 1819); Wilson (about 1821); Martha (about 1822); and Louiza (about 1825), all born Guilford County, North Carolina.

Ruth Thornbrough Jessop

Daughter Ruth Thornbrough married William Jessop, son of William Jessop of Stokes County, 1/4/1797 at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County. Unfortunately the name William Jessop is very common in Indiana. Some WFT files indicate that Ruth died in Randolph County, Indiana and there is a William Jessop in Randolph County, Indiana in 1840 of the right age to be this William but again it would be dangerous to speculate. We will have a look at Indiana Quaker records for information when time permits.
