Robert Sloan was born 6/1/1810 in Pennsylvania, died 8/15/1875 in New Boston in Mercer County, and buried New Boston Cemetery. The parents of Robert Sloan were Robert and Martha Antis Sloan (see Clorita Kenny Family Tree link above). Robert Sloan married Amanda Trusler, who was born 10/5/1811, and died 1/13/1870 in Mercer County, Illinois. She too is buried in New Boston Cemetery. We do not have further information on Amanda's family, although other Truslers came to Mercer County. The Sloan family came to Mercer County from Zanesville, Ohio, and they are first found in the 1840 Mercer County Census: 1 male 30-40; 2 males under 5; 1 female 30-40; 2 females 5-10. We find Robert and Amanda in the 1860 census in New Boston Township: Robert Sloan, age 50, farmer, born Pennsylvania; Amanda, age 50, born Maryland; Henry H., 18; Robert G., 16; Levi L., 14; Amanda J., 12; Prince A., 10, all born Illinois; George W. Sloan, age 22, laborer, born Ohio; Adelia Mallet, 16, domestic, born Ohio. (Adelia appears to be one of three orphan Mallet children found in Mercer County in 1860). Son John Calvin Sloan was already married and living in Eliza Township (see below). The inclusion of George W. Sloan at the end of the list in a census record would usually indicate he was some other relation to the family, but he was included in order in the list of children in the 1850 census in Township 14NR5W. In the 1850 census George W., age 12, was born Ohio, and Henry H., age 8, was born Illinois, indicating the family came to Mercer County sometime between 1838 and 1840. (The History of Mercer County, 1882 says 1837.) In the 1870 census we find widower Robert in New Boston Township: Robert Sloan, 61, farmer, born Pennsylvania; Levi, 21, farmer; (Amanda) Jane, 19, (Prince) Albert Sloan, 17, assisting on farm. We do not find public land records for Robert in Mercer County, but on the 1875 plat map he is shown in Section 5 in New Boston Township. Barbara Sloan LooserRobert and Amanda's daughter, Barbara Sloan, married Jacob Looser, 3/1/1859, and they are found in New Boston Township in 1860 not far from Robert and Amanda: Jacob Looser, 26, farmer, born Switzerland; Barbara, 26, born Ohio. Barbara was born 10/22/1832 in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio, and died 2/6/1896 in Mercer County. Jacob was born March 10, 1834 and died March 25, 1916. The History of Mercer County, 1882 contains a brief sketch of Jacob Loozer. "He was born March 10, 1834 in Switzerland, and emigrated to this country in 1854, and after working one year in Michigan came to Mercer county, where he has since resided... .Although he did not come until much later than some, he ranks among the wealthiest men in the county. ...he labored for four years on the farm for William Drury. ...he has at present 640 acres." (See 1875 plat map for location in Section 7.) In 1860 Jacob and Barbara are living next door to a James M. Trusler family from Ohio that may have been relatives of Amanda Trusler Sloan. Jacob and Barbara Looser are found in the 1870 census: Jacob Looser, 30, farmer, land valued 6500, born Switzerland; Barbara, 30, born Ohio; Elizabeth, 10; Robert G., 8; Jane, 4; and George, 9/12 (Sept.); all born Illinois (their family was complete). Jacob advertised in the Aledo Weekly Record on September 10, 1875: "Holladay's Wind Pump - I still have the agency for the celebrated wind pump (windmill?) for Mercer County. It is, without doubt the best pump of the kind in use. Persons contemplating purchasing will find it their advantage to call on me before giving their orders. Jacob Looser, New Boston, Illinois, Jan 21, 1874."Daughter Elsbeth (Elizabeth shown in 1870) married first Ora Noble and second Charles A. Freise, Jr. as third wife. Daughter Amanda Jane married Samuel Theodore Nelson. Sons Robert and George both farmed in New Boston Township. (From 1914 History of Mercer County) The 1914 History, "Past and Present of Mercer County," tells us that Jacob was a self-made man. He worked as a farm hand in Switzerland at fifty cents per week until he was twenty. He then crossed the Atlantic on an old sailing vessel which took 42 days to make the voyage. He paid $35 for his trip and his food was very poor. He was penniless when he arrived in New York and, unable to find employment, he made his way to Michigan where he worked in a sawmill for a year until stricken with the ague. He finally made his way to New Boston where he worked as a brick mason's assistant until the fall of 1855. He then worked for William Drury as a farmhand for four years, receiving $200 per year. He was very successful in his farming endeavors on his own farm, adding to his holdings until he had more than eight hundred acres of productive land. He cultivated cereals and bred pure-blooded Hereford cattle and at the age of 80 he was hale and hearty and still supervising the operation of his farm in an able and successful manner. John Calvin and Rachel Beard SloanRobert & Amanda's son, John Calvin Sloan married Rachel Beard, daughter of Abraham and Betsey Crull Beard, on 12/19/1858 in Mercer County. John was born 12/18/1836 in Zanesville, Ohio, and died 2/9/1901 in Mercer County. Rachel was born May 1838 in Wayne County, Indiana, and died 1903 in Mercer County. Both are buried in the Mannon Cemetery. John & Rachel are found twice in the 1860 Census in Eliza Township. The records contain minor differences, indicating the records were taken about two months apart: John C. Sloan, age 24, farmer, born Ohio; Rachel, 23, born Indiana; Mary 10/12, born Illinois (the duplicate record gives John's birthplace as Pennsylvania). John and Rachel are found in New Boston Township in 1870: John, age 33, farmer, born Ohio; Rachel, 33, born Indiana; Mary A., 10; (Inez) Jane, 8; Rachel (Ann), 7; Amanda E(lizabeth), 6; and Levi, 2, all born Illinois. They are living next door to Jacob and Barbara Sloan Looser, next door to Harrison Trusler, and about three doors from widower Robert Sloan.John and Rachel had a son William died 8/9/1866, age 8 months, buried Mannon Cemetery. There is an entry in the Mercer County Cemetery Records for Mannon Cemetery under "Children of J. C. & R. Sloan:" "Inez J., 1860-1875." This is Jane shown in the 1870 census. This completes the list of children, as in the 1900 census it notes six children born, four living. In the 1880 Census: John Sloan, 42; Rachel, 41; Mary, 19; (Rachel) Ann , 15; (Amanda) Elizabeth, 13, and Levi, 11. They have a hired hand, John Kelly, 38, born Kentucky, parents born Ireland. There is a tombstone in Mannon Cemetery that reads Mary Sloan Hines 1859-1952 and we believe this is John & Rachel's daughter Mary. Next to her is James A. Hines 1859-n.d. That it is Mary is confirmed by the 1920 census record, where Nathan Beard, brother of Rachel, is working for Mary and John Achilles Hines in Eliza Township. We do not find a marriage record. We do not find a marriage record for Amanda Elizabeth who is supposed to have married a Hull. She was still single in 1900, age 30 (see below). An Elizabeth Hull is buried in Mannon Cemetery (1864-1946). Rachel Ann Sloan married George Groves Wirt on 1/27/1892 in Warren County, Illinois. In 1900 they are in Oxford, Henry County, Illinois, but we could not access the census record. In 1910 they are in Oxford, Henry County: #98 George Wirt, 53, married 18 years, Il, Oh, Eng; Anna, 47, two children born, two living, Il, Oh, In; Harold, 17, Il; Mable, 14, Il. In 1900 in New Boston we find: #174 John Sloan, December 1836, 63, married 42 years, farmer, born Ohio, father Pa, mother Oh; Rachel, May 1838, 62, 6 children born, 4 living; Levi, April 1869, 32, married 1 year, born Il; Lizzie, daughter, April 1870, 30, single, born Il [seems to be Amanda Elizabeth though the birthdate doesn't quite match other records.] John and Rachel'as son, Levi, had married Katie Shunick, daughter of John and Catherine Lee Shunick, on 12/7/1898 in Knox County but is home with his paents in 1900. Kate is found at home with her mother in 1900 in Spring Grove, Warren Co, Il: #209 Catharine Shunick, 65, birthdate blank, married 44 years, 14 children born, 14 living, born Ireland, parents born Ireland; Nora, Dec 186-, Il; Kate, Nov 1873, 27,Il, single; David H, Nov 1875, 24; Blanch, Apr 1878, 22, Il; Theresa, Jan 1880, 20, Il. This appears to be the correct Kate Shunick and it agrees with Levi being at home without his wife in 1900. We suspect the census may be in error as Levi and Kate had a son John born in 1900 and she may have been at home being cared for by her mother during the pregnancy. Levi and Kate are found in 1920 in New Boston: #95 Lee Sloan, 51, born Il, father Oh, mother In, farm operator; Kate, 47, Il, parents born Ireland; John, 20, Il, laborer; Rachel, 18, Il; Milton, 16, Il; Francis [m]14, Il; Warren, 12, Il; Curtis, 10, Il. Levi and Kate's daughter, Rachel, married Wayne Lutrell, son of Marshall Lafayette and Clara Lutrell, on 2/20/1923. Rachel died 9/25/1926 following the birth of son Richard on 9/20/1926. We have heard from Jan Roggy, a Lutrell relative who sent us some obituaries and also a photo of Wayne and Rachel in much happier times. Jan also tells us that Richard Lutrell, Rachel's son, was a well known artist in California and Arizona. You can find some samples of his work on line. A descendant shared an article from "Contemporary Western Artists" by Peggy & Harold Samuels (Click) Levi and Kate's son John Sloan became sheriff of Mercer County. He researched the Beard family and wrote a letter about them which we have included on the Beard page. In the letter he mentions that his grandfather John Sloan raised thoroughbred horses. Eliza Sloan BeardRobert and Amanda's daughter, Eliza Sloan married Jacob Beard, son of Abraham and Betsey Crull Beard, 1/3/1858 in Mercer County. Eliza was born 1834 in Zanesville, Ohio, and Jacob was born about 1832 in Wayne County, Indiana. The History of Mercer County tells us that Jacob settled on Section 9, New Boston Township about 1839. He died 9/3/1889 and is buried in Mannon Cemetery. Jacob and Eliza are found in the 1860 census in New Boston Township: Jacob Beard, 27, farmer, born Indiana; Eliza, 35, born Ohio; Cyrus, 8/12, born Illinois. In 1870: Jacob, 38, farmer, born Indiana; Eliza, 37, born Ohio: Cyrus, 10; Edward, 8; Jane, 6; Alice, 4; Lewis, 3; all born Illinois; Mary Smith, 17, domestic, born Iowa. Jacob and Eliza also had a daughter Ellen, born about 1872, died 1/6/1874 and buried in the Mannon Cemetery. Son Cyrus married Viola Spitznogle 1/31/1881. The only information we currently have on this family is that they had a son Roy Beard, born 12/2/1882 in Mercer County. He had a wife Margaret and they are both buried in Mannon Cemetery. Cyrus (1859-1934) and Viola (1866-1944) are also buried in Mannon Cemetery.George, Henry, and Robert SloanRobert and Amanda's sons George W. Sloan, Henry H. Sloan, and Robert Gilbert Sloan, all served in the Civil War in Company G of the 124th Illinois Infantry. Robert also served in Company G of the 33rd. (see history of these companies on the IlGenWeb SiteSon George W. Sloan married Lucinda McManus on 10/14/1860 in Mercer County. George was born 5/3/1838 in Ohio, and Lucinda was born 8/22/1843 in Indiana. George and Lucinda had a son, George W. Sloan, Jr., born 1/20/1862. On 7/23/1862 George, Sr., enlisted in Company G of the 124th Illinois Infantry. He died at the military hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, on 3/8/1863. He probably died of disease as the company saw no action around that time. George's brother Henry Sloan enlisted about two months later and died at the same hospital just five days before George. Both brothers are buried in New Boston Cemetery. There are old tombstones found there as well as new ones placed by an unknown person {old tombstones photo} {New marker for George photo} {New marker for Henry photo} {Old Monument for George, Henry, and Amanda photo} Lucinda McManus Sloan married Mathew Mcquade (McQuaid) on 12/25/1871. She died 8/26/1872 (probably in childbirth) and is buried next to husband George and son George in New Boston Cemetery. George, Jr. was born 1/20/1862 and died 6/18/1902. We do not find a marriage record for George, Jr., but there is a census record in 1880 in New Boston, next to John and Rachel Beard Sloan: Valara Sloan, 18, born Illinois, mother born Illinois, and father born Indiana. With her is George Sloan, age 17, brother. Son Robert Gilbert Sloan married Amanda Bear 1/20/1870 in Mercer County, Illinois. Robert Sloan was born about 1844 in Mercer County. Amanda Bear Sloan was daughter of Martin and Catherine Bear and was born 6/16/1850. Gilbert Sloan was recruited at New Boston on March 24, 1864, and mustered into Company G, 124th Illinois Infantry on the same day. He was transferred to Company G, 33rd Illinois Infantry on April 20, 1864 and mustered out November 24, 1865. Robert and Amanda are found in New Boston Township in the 1870 census: Robert Sloan, 24, farmer, born Illinois; Amanda, 20, born Illinois. In 1880 they were in Jasper, Jasper County, Missouri: R. G. Sloan, 37, farmer, born Il, parents born Ohio; Amanda, 30, Il, parents born Pa; Lillie, 9, born Mo; Charlie, 7, born Mo; Robert, 5, born Mo. Levi and Jane Baugess SloanRobert and Amanda's son Levi Lewis Sloan married Jane S. (Jennie) Baugess, daughter of David K. and Elizabeth Bauguess, on 4/4/1873 in Mercer County. Levi died June 7, 1890 in Aledo; a descendant tells us he was shot. His tombstone in Aledo Cemetery reads Levi L. Sloan died June 7, 1891, age 44 y 3 m 27 d (birthdate would be Feb 11, 1847.) Sarah Jane Sloan is buried next to him - March 19, 1853-March 19, 1948. Their daughter Bardie is buried next to them: Bardie, dau of L L & S J Sloan died Feb 17, 1893, age 7 yr 11 mo.Levi and Jennie had a son John Fred Sloan who married A. Kate Prouty on 17 Oct 1898 in Muscatine, Iowa. They are found in Lincoln, Monona, Iowa in 1900: #18 Fred Sloan, March 1876, born Il, parents born Il; Kate, Sept 1879, Il, parents born Il; Mable born Oct 1899 Il. In 1910 they are in New Boston in Mercer County: #240 Fred Sloan, 33, married 11 yr, born Il, parents born Il; farmer; Kate, 30, 5 children born, 4 living, Il, father Il, mother In; Mabel, 10, Il; Vivian L, 8, Minn; Murray, 5 N. Dak; Sarah M, 3, N Dak. Fred and Kate are found in 1920 in New Boston Township: #62 Fred Sloan, 42, born Il, own general farm; Kate, 40, born Il; Murry, son, 15, born North Dakota, Sadie, daughter, 13, born N Dakota. Descendant Melisse Trentz tells us of Fred and Kate's daughter Mable Prouty Sloan who married Frederick Beard, son of Abraham Beard. She furnished a photo of Mable and Fred that is posted on the Beard page. Betty Klaviter led us to the marriage of daughter Vivian Sloan to J. B. Zimmerman. They are found in 1920 in Eliza Township, Mercer County: #29 David Zimmerman, own farm, 63, widower born Il, father Gy, mother Pa; Eunice, daughter, 17, Ia, Il, Switzerland; J. B., son 24, Ia, Il, Switz; Vivian, daughter-in-law, 18, Minn, Il, Il; Lora dau, 34, Ia, Il, Switz. We found David Zimmerman's wife's name in the 1900 census in Kossuth, Garfield, Iowa: #99 David Zimmerman, Dec 1856, married 20 yr, Il, Gy, Pa; Lena, Aug 1858, 41, 10 born, 10 living, born Switzerland as were her parents; Josua, son, born Jan 1895 (J. B. who married Vivian Sloan), Jan 1895, Ia, Il, Switz. Amanda Sloan EikenbaryRobert and Amanda's daughter, Amanda Jane Sloan, was born 12/13/1851 in Mercer County and died 6/17/1925 in Kansas City, Missouri. She married Alfred Pierce Eikenbary on 12/29/1875 at Aledo, Illinois. Her history is continued on the Eikenbary page. (There is also a photo of Amanda's tombstone in Kansas City on that page).Prince Albert and Alice Baugess SloanRobert and Amanda's son Prince Albert Sloan married Alice Baugess, sister of Jennie, who married Levi Lewis Sloan above, on 12/21/1876 in Mercer County. In 1880 they are in Union Creek, Madison County, Nebraska: #130 Albert Sloan, 29, plasterer, Il, Oh, Pa; Alice, 23, Il, parents born NC; Bertie, 3, Il, Stella, 1, Il. By 1900 they are back in New Boston (note birth dates and ages for Albert and Alice are not credible): Al Sloan Aug 1863, 36, married 23 years, Il, parents born Ohio; Alice, May 1867, 33, five children born, five living, Il, parents born North Carolina; Stella, June 1878, 21, Il; William,18, August 1881, 18, Ne; John, Jan 1884, 16, Il; Ressa (dau), Sept 1886, 13, Il.************************************************** Other Sloan Families in Mercer CountyA word of caution: There is a William Sloan family from Pennsylvania in Millersburg Township in 1860: William Sloan, 40, farmer, born Pennsylvania; Mary, 39, born Pennsylvania; John, 16; Ellen, 10; Oliver, 8, Rebecca, 6, all born Pennsylvania; Marietta, 3, and Thomas, 1, born Illinois. Since some of the names are the same, they might be confused with the Robert Sloan family. Since this family came from Pennsylvania they might be some distant relative of the Robert Sloan family. They are in Duncan Township in 1870: William, 50; Mary, 44; George O. Sloan, 19, assisting on farm, born Pa; R. Jane Sloan, 16, born Pa; Etta Sloan, 13; Thomas B. Sloan 10, both born Illinois. William died 9/17/1870 and is buried in Eliza Creek Cemetery in Eliza Township. It is a little unclear why he might be buried in Eliza Creek Cemetery but apparently it is this William as his widow Mary is found in Duncan Township in 1880 with sons Oliver and Thomas.Another Pennsylvania Sloan family is found in Greene Township in 1870: Barclay S. Sloan, 39, Clergyman, Pa; Cynthia M., 38, Pa; James H., 7, Pa; Shields B., 1, Il. We have not followed these families further as the townships are not in our area of interest. George Leech married a Maggie Sloan on 26 Dec 1878 in Muscatine Iowa. They are found in Eliza Township in 1880: George Leech, 20, farmer, Il; Maggie, 17, Oh; Orvie 7/12, Il; George Anderson, 7, nephew, at school, Il; Albert Sloan, 10, brother-in-law, at school, born Ohio. We have not identified the parents of Maggie and Albert. |
