Dungan Ancestry / Genealogy

Purpose: To present the Dungan information from the text, Ancestry of Jeremy Clarke of Rhode Island & Dungan Genealogy, on the World Wide Web.

Current & Proposed Activities: Due to the positive response from the online Dungan community, I've decided to shift the emphasis of the MyLines site from my own family line to that of all the descendants of William and Frances Latham Dungan. This will be evidenced by replacing the reference to Robert Johnstone and Mary Parsons Dungan on each page, with a more appropriate reference to William & Frances, two names we can all relate to.

The new goal of the MyLines web site is to present the entire ancestry and genealogy of the Dungan family as first compiled by Alfred Rudolph Justice in his work, Ancestry of Jeremy Clarke of Rhode Island and Dungan Genealogy, and published in 1922.

When appropriate, I will add information from other sources, but always using the Justice work as the foundation for this site. Other information could include published works and/or images of documentation. Formal images of descendants, such as those in the Justice work, might also be included.

I intend to streamline the current and future pages by removing the surname and additional resources links and adding them to this page. I will add a sources link ( done ) that will produce a new window listing the sources referenced by Justice. I will also include the entire index and intend for it to be hyper-linked to each individual; that's a major project so don't look for it soon.

Documentation: I intend to adhere to the following standards of genealogical accuracy: GO. The following are examples of undocumented conjecture found in published Dungan material:

1. William Dungan is the son of Thomas, of Lincoln's Inn.
2. Lewis Latham is the son of John Latham, Jr.
3. Francis Drake is the son of Robert Drake of the Drakes of Drakesworth.

» Second Source: The information contained in the Justice work is what is known as second source. While we read about what an individual left to his heirs, we don't see the actual will. Most of the information presented at the MyLines site is second source, though the Justice work has an extensive listing of sources he used. The responsibility for verifying the information found here with original source materials belongs to the individual researcher. I intend to post original facsimile source materials and/or transcriptions to the site as I find them.

EXPLANATORY

In presenting this genealogical history to the public, a few explanatory remarks are necessary for a full understanding of the text.

The number preceding the name always refers to this person and identifies said person from any other of the same Christian name.

The number in immediately following the name refers to said person's parentage.

The ease with which the ancestry can he traced will be apparent. Take for instance 822, we find he is the son of 316, Thomas Dungan. It will not be necessary to consult the index and go through fifty or more Thomas Dungans to find the right one. Simply refer back to 316, and you have the Thomas you are after. * see below.

The authorities or sources of information, a list of which is given in this volume, are referred to by bracketed numbers.

Great care has been used to avoid errors, which are however, unavoidable in a genealogical work.

Many of the records have been supplied by descendants from their family Bibles or papers. To those who have assisted in this way, the writer takes this opportunity of expressing his thanks.

The original records from abroad were obtained by the writer with the assistance of two professional genealogists, the late Lieut. Perceval Lucas, and Miss Edith Eliot, of Shenstone Lodge, Codrington Hill, Forest Hill, London, England, both of whom the writer found to be careful and reliable.

The American records were copied with care from the usual sources: Church registers, grave stone inscriptions, wills, Administrations, Orphans Court records, Deeds, etc., and, as above mentioned, from family Bibles.

The author will be obliged for the correction of errors and for genealogical information concerning branches of the family which have been omitted.

The books mentioned in the list which follows, with a few exceptions, will be found in the following libraries: Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, Mercantile Library, Philadelphia Library, Ridgeway branch, Free Library of Philadelphia and New York Public Library.

I have begun to hyper-link the generations in order to make following a particular line very easy. In the example listed above, the reference #316 would be hyper-linked back to Thomas Dungan, the father of #822.

2710. Robert B. Johnstone, M. D. 1310: son of Robert and Mary Parsons (Dungan) Johnstone, b. March 17, 1856, living 1916, in Hyattsville, Md., where he connected with the Military Academy of this place.

In time all names will be linked in the above manner as well as from "issue" and following your line should be a snap.

LATEST UPDATE: the Fourth & Fifth Generations 125 to 758. Pages 162 through 226 of the text, including these additional names: Yerkes, Hill, Rundle, Stephen, Gillam, Howell, James, Longshore, Hart, Johnson, Jenkins, Roberts, Boileau, Van Court, Wilson, Percy, Harris, Gill, Wright, Davis, Kirk, Lefferts, Wilkonson, Folwell; among others.

I am close to finishing posting pages 162 - 226, the 4th & 5th Generations. With these pages I've begun to hyperlink generations in both directions. I consider this a major step forward in making the site user friendly.

I continue to update earlier pages from the old format to the new.

The ATOMZ Search Engine has been up for quite a while. As new material goes online the search engine will generate a new index to keep it current. I'm looking at another search engine that will notify the user when there is new material posted as well as generate a site map. If I think it is an improvement over the current engine, I'll put it to use.

Viewing: These pages are best viewed in Microsoft's Internet Explorer using a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. I have the "text size" (see the view menu) set to "smaller" and everything looks the way I intend it to look. I am not an html code wizard, I can only hope that your pages have a neat and balanced appearance.

Pages that were formally titled with a surname other than Dungan, are being changed to the Dungan name; for example, ....latham82.htm will become ...dungan82.htm. I will still leave the other pages up in order for them to be picked up by the various search engines, but I think for most viewers the use of one surname in the address will be make the site easier to navigate.

New Project in the Works: Thanks...to the generosity of Cousin Irene from Washington state who sent an original copy of Folker's paper entitled, The Dungan Family of Eastern Pennsylvania, Levi Dungan, The Westmoreland Pioneer. This paper was first presented to the Bucks County Historical Society in 1909. It has been referred to in the past as "somewhat embellished" and perhaps it is. I do know that it is interesting reading and trust you will enjoy it.
