| News/Obit* | 19 January 2012 | Police release name of driver in fatal crash FORT WAYNE — Police have released the name of a driver who was seriously injured Wednesday in a fatal car crash that killed his passenger. Police said Danny Holifield Jr., 26, was driving when he lost control and steered the Saturn off the roadway at a curve on St. Joe Road. The car then came to a stop after striking a tree head on. Russell Oren Gillespie, 29, of Fort Wayne was killed by blunt force trauma, the coroner's office said in a release. Gillespie is the second traffic fatality in Allen County in 2012. Police were still investigating what caused the crash Wednesday afternoon. The Allen County Sheriff's Department said it was around 4 a.m. when they responded to the scene of a single-vehicle accident in the 11800 block of St. Joe Road. Police found that a 1992 silver Saturn containing two occupants had crashed into a tree. Holifield and Gillespie were both taken to Parkview Hospital in serious condition. Gillespie was later pronounced dead in the emergency department a short time after his arrival. Holifield remained in serious condition later Wednesday morning. Neither men were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said. Police did not say if the crash was alcohol or weather related.
