Recorded in Conveyance Book H of E. Feliciana Parish is their
Marriage Contract, dated Oct 4, 1839. Witnessed by the Parish
Judge L. Saunders, Thomas W. Scott and Thomas S. Shelmire.
When the Civil War came their lives were changed forever. Her
sons went to war, and her husband was old and died before the
war was over. Maria and Eliza were Civil War heroines. They
often ran the Federal blockade carrying medicines and bandages
for the Confedereate soldiers. During the campaign around Baton
Rouge and Port Hudson and after the fall of Baton Rouge these
ladies became notorious for smuggling, which did not escape the
notice of the Federals. Once they disguised the young son of a
neighbor as a girl and managed to smuggle him out of the city.
Another time young Tom McCants was trapped at Hickory Hill by
Federals, who was at home on leave from the CSA. Blanche was
awakened by the dog barking - peeped through the blinds and saw
a double guard of Federal soldiers at each window. Tom
successfully hid in the attic even though the house was
searched.
Louisiana Newspapers have carried stories in the magazine
sections about the old plantation "Hickory Hill" and of the
adventures of the two Livingston sisters, Maria and Eliza.
Newspaper clipping: Died. McCants-- On Wesnesday, July 25, 1877
at 11 1/2 P.M.
Maria Y. Livingston, wife of the late David McCants.
Maria died in her home in the Eleventh Ward, Garden District, at
Eight Street and Chestnut, New Orleans, LA.
In the Andrea Collection, according to a source "Though she was
kept busy with the management of her home and family, she found
time to work several large tapestries, done in needlework with
exquisite detail and color. Two of her tapestries, somewhat
faded after hanging in the front parlor of Hickory Hill for over
a century, still hang there for her great-great-grandchildren to
ponder over. She was also an artist with the brush, and there
remains a self-portrait of herself."
Maria was a widow before the War was over as David died June 4
1864. Sometime after his death, she closed up Hickory Hill and
moved to their New Orleans home taking many of the furnishings
with her. After her death in 1877, most of their massive, heavy
furniture was sold by the children.
"He was married twice, but his second wife was Miss Maria Y.
Livingston, who, with her mother, sisters and brothers, removed
from Charleston, S. C., to New Orleans, La., thence to East
Feliciana parish, where she met and married Mr. McCants. She
died on July 26, 1877, at New Orleans, where she had a home and
lived part of the time. She was a skillful and tasteful worker
in tapestry, and many of her pictures were highly complimented
and took a number of premiums at different fairs. Her largest
piece, for which she was offered $500, was "Christ Predicting
the Destruction of Jerusalem," and was on exhibition several
times. Her mother, Mrs. Margaret Livingston, was also a
skilled needle-woman and one of her large pictures on tapestry,
portraying George Washington in his continental uniform, was
considered her masterpiece, and she was on various occasions
offered several hundred dollars for it. Mrs. Freeman has a few
of these pictures which are, without doubt, admirable works of
art. Mrs. Margaret (McLean) Livingston was of Scotch descent,
and Mr. and Mrs. Freeman have in their possession a cornelian
seal with the McLean court of arms on it. The design is an arm
half bent and a dagger about to sever it. The seal was formerly
used for sealing letters. To Mr. and Mrs. McCants were born
nine children, seven of whom lived to be grown and four are now
living: Robert Y.; Malvinia Imogene; Valeria Blanche;
Willhelmina Ernestine, wife of W. 0. B. McNeely, living, and
Constancia B., who died at the age of five years; Ann M., who
died when eighteen months old; William Scott, who died while
serving in the army in Company E, First Louisiana cavalry;
Junius C., who died in New Orleans, having served in the Ninth
Louisiana battalion during the Civil war, and Thomas Scott.,
who was also in the confederate army, entering the service at
the age of thirteen years. He was a member of Company I, Ninth
Louisiana battery, under Holmes."
