msg from Robert M. Allen, EMail: [email protected] 7/98 "The long standing account which say John and Lucy (Granville) Penn are the parents. The dates do not match. Furthermore, there is Caroline Co., VA Court Order Book reference in 1741 where the will of John Penn was presented for probate by Elizabeth Penn and Moses Penn, coexecutors. I think Elizabeth Penn was the wife of this John Penn and the Moses Penn was an adult son of John Penn. I think this John Penn was the father of Moses, George, Joseph and John. I think Elizabeth was their mother. I think Elizabeth was either a Madison or a Taylor. Here are my thoughts on this subject:

The Caroline Co., VA Court Order Book has a reference for a Court held on 8 May 1741 to the Last Will and Testament of John Penn, deceased, being presented in Court by Elizabeth Penn and Moses Penn, coexecutors. This reference also mentions that John Taylor and Edmund Taylor were witnesses to the will.

I think that this John Penn (any Elizabeth __?__) are the parents of Moses, George, Joseph and John who all trace back to Caroline Co., VA. The Taylor witnesses to the Will and the Taylor connection to Moses Penn and Joseph Penn are part of the evidence on which I base my assumption. Assuming that this John Penn was the father, I estimate that he would have been born about 1680. I think Moses, George, Joseph and John (Jr.) were born about 1700-1710 (some accounts have slightly earlier estimates for the dates of birth).

The 1704 Quit Rent Rolls for King & Queen Co., VA list a John Penn who owned 200 acres of land. Since Caroline Co., VA was formed in 1727 out of King & Queen Co., VA, it seems likely that this John Penn was the same John Penn who died in Caroline Co., VA in 1741. Certainly, he is too old to be any of the 4 brothers (Moses, George, Joseph, John (Jr.)).

Ambrose Madison (ca. 1700-1732) married Frances Taylor, daughter of James Taylor and Martha Thompson, on 24 Aug. 1721. James Taylor (1670-1729), father of Frances Taylor, was a brother to John Taylor who fathered Mary Taylor, wife of Joseph Penn, and Catherine Taylor, wife of Moses Penn. There is an Ambrose Madison bible which lists the children born to Ambrose Madison and Frances Taylor. It also lists the godparents of the children. An Elizabeth Penn was listed as the godmother for two of the children (James Madison, born 27 March 1723 and Frances Madison, born 6 March 1726). Other godparents named were Thomas Madison, James Taylor, Martha Taylor, James Pendleton and Isabell Pendleton.

Who is this Elizabeth Penn who is named a godmother to these two Madison children? My first assumption is that she is the wife of the John Penn who died in 1741. I think that her maiden name was Madison or Taylor based on the relationship of the other godparents in the Ambrose Madison bible. For some unexplainable reason, my leaning is toward Madison (maybe because there is so much known about the Taylors and I have not found an Elizabeth Taylor who fits).

This is just a working assumption, not a fact. Of course there could be other possibilities. She could be a Pendleton. She could be a different person than the wife of the John Penn who died in 1741, such as an unmarried Penn (perhaps a sister to the John Penn who died in 1741).

I have found no primary source record that there ever was a John Penn who married a Lucy Granville. There must be some primary source of this couple's existence, but I have not found it in 25 years of reserach. I am looking for primary source proof that such a couple ever existed and thereafter, I would like to see any primary source information about them or their proven children. I also dispute that William Penn and Elizabeth Markham belong in the lineage of the four brothers."
