"Grant - George III, by governor William Tryon of North
Carolina, to John Boyd, 200 Acres in Mecklenburgh County, NC, on
the Pinte Branch between the two main forks of Fishing Creek,
beginning at a Hickory on Samuel McCances line, then N 180 poles
to a white oad; then 180 poles to a water oak in a pond; then S
180 poles to one-half feet). Plat dated June 25, 1765 by
William Dickson, Surveyor. Recorded in Book #12 by John Landon
and entered in office of Auditor General in Wilmington September
27, 1766 by Daniel Hutty.
A second deed dated December 5, 1771, between John Boyd and
Charles Strong mentions land belonging to Samuel McCantz and a
third deed dated December 10, 1771 between William Miller and
John Mills was witnessed by Hugh Whitesides, Andrew McCance and
Samuel McCance. No other record of Andrew McCance has been
found but he too may be closely related.
The border between NC and SC was surveyed in 1764 east of the
Catawba River and in 1772 west of the Catawba river. Prior to
these surveys, much of the land along the border between the two
states as considered to be in NC. The counties of Marlboro,
Chesterfield, Lancaster, York, Chester, Union, Spartanburg,
Cherokee, portions of Greenville, Laurens, and Newberry in SC
were involved. NC counties of Bladen, Anson, Mecklenburg and
Tryon were involved. Fishing Creek, which flows through what is
now York Co SC may have been in NC then.
