Sallie Rueberry Burgess wrote in February, 1930:
"'Who are they and whence came they?' The historians trace their ancestry back to ANTRIM and ULSTER in North Ireland, but they are not natives of Ireland. In the great struggle for freedom and Protestantism in England, the Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnel, because of their Romanish sympathies, forfeited their great landed estates, where Belfast now towers in her morality and Christianity above Dublin and Cork. These lands were settled by colonist from Scotland and England and are now known as 'Scotch-Irish'. All the world knows their proud record and great moral influence. This stream of Scotch-Irish flowed chiefly through the port of Philadelphia, but our family came directly through the port of Charleston, S. C., and settled in the 'low country' of South Carolina, in Clarendon, Williamsburg, and Sumter Counties. Our
great-grandfather, JOSEPH BURGESS and wife, Margaret Armstrong, came from Antrim, Ireland, near Belfast, to America on 'The Irish Volunteer', a sailing vessel, landing at Charleston in 1791, with six chirlden. They were three months on the journey across the Atlantic. After crossing the Gulf Stream safely, they were caught in a storm and swept back - - so they crossed it three times. On coming up the Black River, they made a narrow escape from drowning when the flat almost capsized. ... our great-grandfather first settled in Williamsburg. SC where others of the family had located sometime before, and later moved to Mecklenburg County, N. C. .... There they lived and are buried at old Providence Presbyterian Church, ten miles from Charlotte, N.C."
