John CONEY

2 Jun 1833 - 25 Aug 1866

ID Number: I75646

  • OCCUPATION: livery stable and a mercantile store
  • RESIDENCE: Chautauqua Co. NY
  • BIRTH: 2 Jun 1833, Portland, New York
  • DEATH: 25 Aug 1866, Dunkirk, New York
  • BURIAL: Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Chautauqua Co. New York
  • RESOURCES: See: notes
Father: Oliver CONEY

Notes

while doing some research on my Pike Co. Mississippi CONEY line I found this interesting tidbit on domestics in NY. It sounded so familiar.

"John Coney, Oliver and Sophia's son, born at Portland, N.Y., June 2, 1833. Died in Dunkirk, N.Y. Aug. 25, 1866. Married Mary Jane Young, born in New York in 1833 and died about 1861. They owned a livery stable and a mercantile store and had a "colored Mammy" to care for the children."

There is a great little paperback by Francis W. Springer for $10 called "War for What". He was born in Maine in 1899, lived in NYC, Wash DC etc and retired to a farm in Virginia. On the back cover he wrote:

"For every slave the slave traders sold the South more than ten were sold to brazil, Cuba and the West Indies. Why is all the hatred over slavery directed at the South?"
