Notes

John Garnett's son, James Garnett, born January 17, 1692, will probated in Essex County July 25, 1765, is said to have married three times: Sarah Green, Elizabeth Muscoe, and Mary Rowsee Jones.

"MOUNT PLEASANT, Essex County, Virginia USA In 1734-5, James Garnett bought a hilltop tract of land in the Rappahannock valley of Virginia, which he called "Mount Pleasant" and which in later years became the homestead of the Mercer-Garnett branch. It has remained in that family down to the present generation. James Garnett steadily acquired neighbouring lands until the estate reached to the shores of the Rappahannock River and extended far up its southern bank. In 1734 he erected a large brick mansion with handsome stone steps commanding a splendid view of the river. It was to this new home that James Garnett brought his second wife, Elizabeth Muscoe, the eldest daughter of Salvator Muscoe, a lawyer and landed proprietor in Essex and the son of Salvator Muscoe Sr. of Monmouth Street, St. Giles-in- the-Fields, London.

At "Mount Pleasant" on August 17, 1736 was born a son, Muscoe Garnett, and six days later [August 23, 1736] the young mother died.

In 1765 Muscoe Garnett inherited "Mount Pleasant" under the terms of his father's will. He also inherited his mother's share of the estate of his grandfather, Salvator Muscoe. To these he added by purchase over a period of years a number of other tracts until his holdings were comparable with those of the largest landowners in the county.

Muscoe Garnett and his wife, the former Grace Fenton Mercer, resided at "Mount Pleasant" until their deaths---his in January of 1803 and hers on June 4, 1814---after which the plantation passed into the hands of their son, John Mercer Garnett, a bachelor who resided there until his own death on April 3, 1856. The house was then closed, and was later totally destroyed by fire at the beginning of the Civil War. Nothing now remains of it, even of the ruin. About 1,000 acres of the Garnett estate still belonged in the 1930s to Mrs. J. Clayton Mitchell, who was Mary Barton Picton Garnett, the only daughter of the Honourable Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett of "Elmwood". She had no children, and the properties eventually passed to her nephew, another offspring of this illustrious family of Garnetts to have carried the name of Muscoe Russel Hunter Garnett. SOURCE: Genealogy of the Garnetts of Essex County and their Homes, by William Garnett Chisolm, originally published in Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, January, 1934, volume 42, #1"

James GARNETT, the son of John GARNETT and his wife Ann, was born in Gloucester County on January 17, 1692. He married Sarah GREEN in about 1716 by whom he had seven children.

In 1720 he was appointed a Justice of Essex, Virginia, which office he held for 20 years, and in 1728 was appointed Sheriff of the county. Vauter's Church, the parish church of St. Anne's, still stands on the main highway near Loretta. It was built before 1731 and James GARNETT was a member of the cestry, a position held by three succeeding generations of the family.

During his early married life he probably lived on an estate adjoining "Blandfield" the Beverley homestead. Part of this estate was called "Greenfield" and James' father, John GARNETT, was buried there and had no doubt lived there before him.

In 1734, James Garnett bought the first parcel [the hill-top] of the tract which he called "Mount Pleasant". He steadily acquired neighboring lands until the estate reached to the shores of the Rappahannock and extended far up its southern bank. Here in 1734 he erected a large brick mansion with handsome stone steps, commanding a splendid view of the river, and here he
brought his second wife, Elizabeth MUSCOE to live.

Elizabeth MUSCOE GARNETT died shortly after the birth of their first child, Muscoe GARNETT in 1736.

James GARNETT married for a third time, Mary Rouzie JONES, the widow of Captain Thomas Jones, and daughter of Captain Edward ROUZIE. (Mother of James and Betty Garnett)

In 1741 James GARNETT ran as a candidate for the Burgess and served from 1741 to 1747. He was defeated in 1755. He was also at one time a Captain in the colonial militia and went by the name of Captain Garnett.

James GARNETT was left a widower for a third time, and he married as his fourth and last wife, Margaret SCOTT by whom he had no issue.

The will of James GARNETT is dated April 8, 1765 and was proved in Essex on July 15, 1765. In it he names his son Muscoe GARNETT as his executor and the guardian of his two younger children, James and Betty Garnett. He also mentions his grandaughters Sarah and Milly GARNETT. At the time of his death on May 27, 1765, he was a large landed proprietor and his will disposes of lands in Spotsylvania, Caroline and Orange counties as well as in Essex.
To his grandsons Francis GARNETT, Harry [Henry] GARNETT, and Augustine GARNETT
he devised various lands in Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg and Orange County.
To grandson Francis GARNETT he left 2000 acres at "Gladys Fork" in Spotsylvania County. To Augustine GARNETT he left land purchased from Anthony GARNETT on Occupatia Creek. And to Harry GARNETT he willed land on Occupatia Creek bought from Edward ROZEE and lands in Caroline County purchased from Francis GOULDMAN.

The will was dated April 18, 1765 [a little over a month before his death] and was probated on July 15, 1765. [Will Book Number 12, page 190, Essex County, Virginia] .

---The History of the "Mount Pleasant" Plantation Beginning in 1657, Capt.Thomas Hawkins (d. 1677) patented land on the south side of the Rappahannock River, Old Rappahannock County [in present day Essex]. He married Frances (maiden name unknown), and had two daughters and two sons. The land was inherited by his son, John Hawkins. He married Grace, widow of Samuel Stalled, and had two sons and two daughters. John sold the land to Bartholomew Voter (d. 171 7). Bartholomew married, in 1690, Winifred Hodgson. They had one daughter and five sons. On the death of Bartholomew, the land was inherited by his son, John. John married Margaret Noel, daughter of Daniel Noel and Elizabeth Elliott. They had two daughters and four sons. In 1752, their son, Bartholomew, sold the property to Capt. James Garnett, Sr. (1692-1765), son of John Garnett , Sr., and his wife Anne.---Source:Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia, page 109, :
