Subject: [VAHANOVE] James Glen of Colonial Hanover Co.
Date: Sun, 5 May 2002 11:49:20 -0600
From: [email protected]
James Glen of colonial Hanover Co. is believed to be the father of Mourning Glen (d. ca 1776), wife of Major Robert Harris (d. ca 1775) of colonial Louisa and Albemarle Cos.
I found this abstracted Glen will in a publication, and I believe the Nehemiah Glen is rather supposed to be Jeremiah Glen, as found in other records. James Glen patented several parcels of land in Hanover Co., VA
(Pat. Bk 10-322 in 1717; Pat Bk 11-11 in 1719; Pat Bk 13-416 in 1729) and
Jeremiah Glen patented land in Hanover Co. (Pt. Bk 14-128, 1730; Pt. Bk 16-259 in 1735)
The abstracted will of James Glen is as follows:
"James Glen Hano-St. Martin 11 Jun 1762/3 Feb 1763
Son Gideon Glen. Son Nehemiah Glen land bound by a plan drawn by Robert Harris. Son Nathan Glen. Son James Glen. Daughter Gemima Symes.
Granddaughters Frances Harris (under 18), Jude Harris (under 18), Anna Glen Harris and Molly Glen Harris (under 18). Grandson Peter Harris.
Grandson Tyre Harris.
Daughter Hannah Austin. Daughter Mary Hopkins. Daughter Elizabeth Byass. Daughter Ann Glen. Wife Hannah Glen. Son Thompson Glen.
Daughters Keziah Harris and Sarah Dabney. Exors: Sons Gideon Glen,
Nehemiah Glen and Nathan Glen. Wit: Mary Gilbert, Anna Gilbert, Henry Gilbert.
(Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly V. 14, pp. 84-87." as quoted in
William Lindsay Hopkins, SOME WILLS FROM THE BURNED COUNTIES (Richmond:
1987).
I believe some of these Harris grandchildren MAY be children of Major Robert Harris, but I cannot prove this with my present research.
Question: Is this testator the patriarch James Glen, or is the testator a son of the elder James Glen?
I have re-read the Harris family information Malcolm Hart Harris included in the History of Louisa Co., and I find it extremely flawed. I believe in later writings, as in various issues of The Virginia Genealogist, he corrected some of this information about the Harris family.

This Harris family, as far as can be determined by more recent research, has NO links to the early immigrant Thomas Harris, according to the latest editions of Adventurers of Purse and Person by John Frederick Dorman.
Furthermore, recent Claiborne family historians have found no trace of a woman named Mary Claiborne, reportedly married to Robert Harris immigrant, the reported grandfather of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co. and Albemarle Co. Robert Harris, the immigrant, is reportedly the father of William Harris, who married Temperance Overton.

Any good guidelines you listers can give me? I prefer primary sources, as I have dipped into most of the secondary sources about Harris--from the Swem Library at William and Mary College to Salt Lake City to the Los Angeles Public Library! But I need to know more about the Glens!
E.W.Wallace a descendant of Robert's son Christopher Harris of Albemarle Co. and Madison
Co., KY
