At the age of 16, on Apr 23 1861, he was mustered into MS Vol. Co. E. 16 Reg. MS Infantry, Capt. S. A. Matthews Co. for a period of 12 mos. Records show he was sick in camp at Corinth, MS on June 15, 1861. His letter of discharge, dtd Aug 16, 1862, signed by John Holmes, 2nd Lt, near Gordonsville, VA. states that, " Pvt. W. L. Coney born in the Co. of Pike in the State of MS, aged 17 years, five feet 9 inches height, light complexion, hazel eyes and by profession when enlisted a student."


At discharge he drew $38.86, his back pay from May 1 to Aug 16, 1862 at $11 per mo., plus $2.53 "on account of nothing not drawn in kind".

He later served in Stockdale's Cavalry, Co. I, 4th MS Cavalry.

(Organized by consolidation Nov. 1863 of Hughes's Cav. Bn., Partisan Rangers and Stockdale's Cav. Bn., Col. Christopher C. Wilbourn; surrendered May 4, 1865. 4th Miss. Cav. Regt.

He was city marshal at Magnolia, MS for many years and was affectionately known as "Uncle Bose" to one and all. Once he was shot in the back in the line of duty; and also shot once while taking a prisoner named Head to the penitentiary.


The Magnolia Gazette account of his death: "...Deceased was one of the early citizens of Magnolia having spent practically the whole of his life here. About a year ago he went to Summit and has since lived in the home of his daughter (Mrs. Geo. C. Brannigan) there. In his active years Mr. Coney was a prominent man of the county and widely known. At one time he was a member of the Board of Supervisors and served several terms as Marshal of Magnolia.

Coney, W. D. Confederate Cavalry 4th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
4th Cavalry Regiment [also called 4th Battalion] was organized during the fall of 1862 by consolidating Hughes' and Stockdale's Mississippi Cavalry Battalions. The unit was assigned to W.Adams', Mabry's, Starke's Brigade and fought the Federals in Tennessee and Mississippi. In the engagement at Harrisburg it reported 52 casualties. Only a remnant surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. Its commanders were Colonel C.C. Wilbourn, Lieutenant Colonels Cornelius McLaurin and Thomas R. Stockdale, and Major James M. Norman.

In the Name of God Amen. I Robert Donipahn of the Parish of Brunswick in the county of King George being sick and weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.


Item: I give and bequeath to my loving son Robert Doniphan two negro girls Dinah and Truelove and like wise a Negro man named Sam and two feather beds and furniture at the day of marriage and likewise sufficient schooling, those Negroes above mentioned to him and his heirs forever.


Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Ellen Doniphan three Negroes, Edinbourough, London and Kate and also a white servant woman named Isabella Gordon and
also a lease of land lying in the little fork of Rappahannock River in Orange County and all the rest of my personal estate I give to her and her heirs forever.


Item: I give and bequeath to my loving nephew Mott Dearmitt all my wearing cloaths. It is my desire that James Hackley and my loving wife Ellen Doniphan be Executor
of this my last will and Testament, utterly revoking all former wills by me at any time made. I do hereby acknowledge this my last will and testament as witness my hand and seale this Twenty Third day of October One Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty Three.
