Notes

VA Soldiers of 1776, Vol III by Burgess - Larkin joined the Rev. Army 14 Jan 1781 & was discharged Mar 1782 in Wm. Tucker's Co. Amherst Co. VA.

By 1795, Larkin acquired land in Elbert Co.GA from John Staples. In 1803 he was the adm of the est of his son, James Gatewood, Elbert Co.

Larkin moved to Georgia about 1790, with other members of the Gatewood and Higginbotham families. Records show he received 200 acres in Wilkes Co. GA in 1797, plus 350 acres more later in the same year.

His will, signed Oct 1, 1802 and probated Apr 22, 1805 in Elbert co. GA leaves "to wife Catherine all estate, to be divided at her death between my three daughers, Amy Upshaw, Mary Higginbotham and Dolly Higginbotham. To daughter-in-law Betsy Gatewood cow and calf. My three sons-in-law John Upshaw, Benjamin and Francis Higginbotham, excrs....R. Hunt, William Phelps, and Anderson England, Test." (Historical Collections, GA. DAR V).

Mary Penn, infant orphan of Joseph Penn deceased had Larkin Gatewood appointed as her guardian in Amherst Co., VA in 1769, she is most likely the daughter of Joseph Penn and Mary Taylor. This entry likely establishes the approximate date of death of Joseph Penn. In 1784 Larkin Gatewood returned an accounting of the guardianship of "Molley" Penn who I believe is the same person as Mary Penn. [S125] [S11] [S125] [S739]
