Notes

"PENDLETON, Nathanael Greene, 1793-1861: PENDLETON, Nathanael Greene, (father of George Hunt Pendleton), a Representative from Ohio; born in Savannah, Ga., August 25, 1793, moved to New York City with his parents; was graduated from Columbia College at New York City in 1813; studied law; was admitted to the bar; served in the War of 1812; moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1818 and practiced law; member of the State senate 1825-1829; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843); did not seek renomination in 1842; died in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 16, 1861; interment in Spring Grove Cemetery."

II. Nathaniel Greene Pendleton((5)), b. Savannah, Ga., Aug. 21, 1793; d. June 16, 1861.

PENDLETON, Nathaniel Greene, representative, was born in Savannah, Ga., in August, 1793; son of Nathaniel Pendleton, jurist (q.v.) He was graduated at Columbia college in 1813, and was married to a Miss Hunt. He was aide-de-camp on the staff of Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gaines, U.S.A., 1813-15; removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1818, where he practised law, was a member of the state senate, 1825-27, and a representative from the first district in the 27th congress, 1841-43. He died in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 16, 1861.

Negotiations were begun with N. G. Pendleton and Mr. Hunt for purchase of land tracts totaling six acres (four city blocks) between Broadway and Pendleton St., and Woodward and Lebanon Turnpike. The land, about five blocks east of St. Mary's, was bought in February, 1848 for $95,000 (about $1.4 million in 1999 dollars), with the first payment of $25,000 ($375,000 in today's dollars) not made until May.

Catholic Biographies: Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Ohio; Rev. Joseph H. Ferneding, 1802-1872 Priest in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, 1842 to 1872; Vicar General, 1844-1872 By Robert F. Niehaus. http://www2.eos.net/dajend/ferneding2.html

"The owner of the land, N. G. Pendleton, was pressed by a delegation of "Know-Nothing" bigots to cancel the land sale to the Catholics. Mr. Pendleton rejected their arguments, saying: "Under the guidance of a man like Rev. Ferneding my money is safe, and I do not have to worry. I know the Catholic people are reliable, honest, god-fearing, and that they stand by their promises."

The six-acre tract was much larger than needed for a city church, rectory and grade school. Fr. Ferneding and his committee had the tract platted into 85 lots, 78 of which would be offered for sale to pay for the tract and, perhaps, part of the building work."
