"CORLEY or KARLE THE ALLAN DAVID CHARLES FAMILY: The origin of
the Charles family has not been throughly researched, but the
family in Up Country South Carolina appears to have descended
from a German ancestor named Karls, Car!, or Carlee. This
ancestor apparently emigrated from Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany,
around the 1730's or 40's and settled either in the Saxe-Gotha
or Dutch Fork areas of South Carolina - modern Lexington and
lower Newberry counties.
The family name was anglicized to Charles and to Corley, with
the first Charles who left much of a mark on the historical
record being Michael Charles, Sr., of Newberry County." See:

"Our John Henry's father was Adam D. Corley who is buried at
Nazareth Methodist Church in Saluda, SC.
Adam's father was William Corley. We're not sure where William
is buried.
William's father was Laurance (Lorentz) Emanuel Corley (Karle),
who helped establish Lexington, then known as Saxe Gotha.
Laurance served in the Revolutionary War under the name Lawrence
Charles. He was married twice and had 16 children. He is buried
in the Corley Cemetary in Lexington which is located at the
corner of Harmon Street and Laurel Street. I haven't been to his
gravesite yet, but plan to visit when we're there for Christmas.
Laurance's father was John Georg Karle, but that is all I know
about him. I found a reference in one website that John Georg
came over here from Denmark or Germany, but nothing about where
he is buried or who his spouse was or how many children they had
other than Laurance. We have visited the Corley House in
Lexington that Laurance and his family lived in."
