Records indicate Thomazin had five illegitimate children by
Richard Perryman, a married planter, of Christ Church Parish:
John and William (both baptized the sons of Dr. Paul and
Thomazin Carrington 14 March 1696/97 in St. Philip's Parish),
Mary, Rachel, and Francis. That these were Perryman's children
suggested by a deed 30 September 1704 in which he sold her 4
acres in Christ Church Parish "in consideration of the great
love & affection which I bear unto Thomazina Carrington."
Mentioned in the deed as heirs to the property were her two
sons, John and William, and her two daughters, Mary and Rachel.
(RB3/27/67) Francis, the fifth child by this relationship, was
baptized the son of Richard Perryman a year later. The will of
Richard Perryman provided supporting evidence. It names "my much
esteemed friend Thomazin Waterland alias Carrington" an her five
children, John, William, Mary, Rachel, and Francis, as his
heirs. These children did not reside with Dr. Paul Carrington
after the annulment and are not mentioned in his will. In
addition , these same children are later referred to in various
records as "Perryman,"
"Perryman alias Carrington" or "Perryman alias Carrington alias
Waterland"----it then being common to denote illegitimacy with
"alias." But these are not the only children whose parentage has
been questioned. Recently, an emininent Barbados historian
posited the thesis
that Dr. Paul Carrington had three daughters---Elizabeth
Carrington, Ann (Carrington) Mayo and Mary (Carrington)
Milward--by an unidentified women. His argument that the
children could of have been Thomazin's because of their ages, is
based upon the collation of approximate birth dates from
baptismal registers and census returns. However, Barbados
records for this period are incomplete and birth dates
frequently differ from census returns by as much as two years.
Due consideration must be given to Thomazina naming two of her
children by different fathers, Mary, but it does not seam
reasonable to conclude that Thomazina was both deceptive and
promiscuous. Therefore, until further evidence becomes
available, one must assume the children in question were the
issue of Dr. Paul and Thomazina, and because of the former's
wealth and the latter's continuing relationship with a married
man, the three girls were raised by Dr. Paul after the
annulment. Certainly they were not the children of his second
wife, Heningham Codrington, since they are referred to as
"daughter-in-laws" [step-daughters] in her will. In 1701 a
petition of Dr. Paul Carrington was presented to the Barbados
house of Assembly, but held over for consideration until the
next session. This Petition is no longer available, but since
his first Child, Nathaniel, by Heningham
(Codrington) Carrington was born in 1702, it is probable that
petition referred to his marital problems. Four years later, in
a unique event for the times, the marriage of Paul Carrington,
Chirurgeon, and Thomazin his Wife, August 13, 1706."
According to the Barbados Census of 1715, Thomazin Carrington
was 40 years old and lived in Christ Church Parish with the
following children:
John Perryman, age 20; Rachel Perryman, age 16: and Francis
Perryman, age 10."
