Notes

I * Mary,7 born 1779 at Dover in Goochland county, Virginia.
At one time during the Revolutionary War, Lord Cornwallis halted his command at Dover for a few days, and made his headquarters, for the time, at the residence of Major Josiah Woodson. At that time this little Mary was an infant in the cradle. Her mother manifesting some alarm at having enemies in the house, Cornwallis sought to calm her fears by imprinting a fatherly kiss upon the baby. The parents were ever afterwards grateful for this little act of kindness on the part of the British commander.

The child grew to young womanhood and in 1801, was married to Dr. James Wynne Moss of Goochland county. In 1803 they went Maysville, Kentucky, where they remained until 1820, then removed Boone county, Missouri, and later to St.Louis. She died about 1839 in St. Louis, and he died on his farm near that city in the winter of 1858.
