Other Whitleys in Fauquier: Daniel m. Susanna Duncan, 1800; Geo
m. Eliz Martin 1793. William, James, Shadrack, John and Joseph.
"Francis Whitely's first appearance in a Loudoun court was in a
suit by Thomas Noland in 1797. Francis had to be twenty-one to
be party to a suit. If his birth was in 1776, his age of 74 in
the 1850 Census is consistent. Francis borrowed money from his
half-brother Alexander. Inventory of Alexander's estate showed
three bonds signed by Francis - one was co-signed by William
Whitely (Will book I - 48). Francis was a party to several
court actions through 1810. In 1807 he married Elizabeth Hand,
daughter of Francis Hand, in Fauquier County, just south of
Loudoun. They were also listed in the 1810 Census of Fauquier.
Their next appearances in the Census were in 1820 and 1830 in
Culpeper County. Francis and Elizabeth had some court settlement
in 1816 with Thomas and Absolem Hand - perhaps her brothers. In
1820 Francis and Elizabeth sold land to Joseph Lewis. In 1827
they sold eleven acres at Chesters Gap at the foot of the Blue
Ridge mountains - an area now in Rappahannock County. Francis
and Elizabeth Whitely did not follow his brothers and sister to
Bedford. They moved instead to Greene County, about fifty miles
southwest of Fauquier County. The 1840-1860 Censuses show them
in Greene County where Francis was listed as a Physician in
1850. I found no evidence that he owned property or even left a
will in Greene County so I have no further information on him at
this time".
Greene County is located in Central Virginia - 100 miles
southwest of Washington D.C., 90 miles west of Richmond and 12
miles north of Charlottesville. Greene county is bounded by
Albemarle, Madison, Page, Orange and Rockingham counties.
FAUQUIER -- formed in 1759 from PRINCE WILLIAM. As had been
the case for a half-century, these lands were largely taken up
by descendants of families from the
Northern Neck, or from along the south bank of the Potomac and
its tributaries, and from across the Potomac in Maryland. The
area also was getting a greater share of new immigrants,
following the establishment of port facilities on the Potomac at
Alexandria and Georgetown.
